I ain't hating or being negative towards it! I'm really pumped for the film. It's why I said "I think FOX is learning its lesson". I feel like Days of Future Past is going to be the big flick for FOX's X-Men franchise where people will start taking them seriously.

I'm holding out that there's a bigger plan in place with time travel and shiz because while First Class was an EXCELLENT film, yes, as you said, many of the changes bothered me. Although, I don't mind the lineup change, I was REALLY bothered by the fact that Emma Frost was a 30 year old woman.

Grace stated she thought that his hair naturally moved into is place, but I remember, as a child, Wolverine using moose to put his hair in place in an X-men comic. He was talking to Storm during his hair styling. Please let me know if your remember the issue. Grace Randolph is one of the best supporter of comics. I don't always agree with her analyst, but I never question her heart.

Hello, Grace, thanks for this review. I saw the movie on Thursday night, and I gotta say, I gave up on my ideal Wolverine movie after watching that "Origins" train wreck, and so my expectations for this one were quite low. But I was surprised by the direction in this one. It's more psychological , wolvie's really haunted by what he did in X3. Jackman seemed like he was in every scene, and he really owns, but this makes the whole thing look like a TV episode rather than a movie.

Going to see it tonight. But I haven't liked any X-Men movie more than 4/5 to date. My thoughts are in agreement with Grace in the intro -- Singer & Jackman are wonderfully well-meaning but neither are ideal especially Singer. It's pretty hard to not please people after that last one too.

I had some issues with this movies, which I don't want to comment because I would spoil major parts of it, but I enjoyed it much more than Origins. Logan swore a few times, which made it feel more like the comic version of Wolverine. I also hear that there might be an unrated Blu-ray release later on with about 12 minutes of extra footage, and more blood effects added to certain scenes. I could see how that would make it more enjoyable for a comic book fan.

I watched it on Wednesday here in Germany. I love this film and have to dissagree with nearly everything you said. But i think the most important thing is that I had fun. You're right on the post-credits scene. The audience was (just like me) totally psyched when Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart showed up.

Great to see both of you together - I think reviewing stuff in tandem helps tease the ideas out. Think the X-Men franchise has had its day, with Singer's return the death knell (i'm surprised he's allowed near big budget action). I don't know anybody who's excited about this movieverse any more. Looking forward to seeing you guys together again :D

Since I haven't seen this movie yet, I have nothing to say. Since everyone beat me to the hating the camera movement statements, I'm going to have to say I absolutely loved the way you pretty much cut the person speaking out of the frame. I also enjoyed the couple of times where it looked as though the camera got stuck on something then made a quick jerking movement. Well played!
@TheWrongHands1811 жыл бұрын
There's a visual of Wolverine in the original comic of Wolverine riddled with arrows. That was a nod to that image. Also, the comic had Wolverine healing, but very slowly, he didn't get the instant healing until much later. Thus we have the plot device of him healing very slowly.

I wanted to see Hugh Jackman act. I felt the story was a deep drama and does more about exploring the character including focusing on the pain Logan is facing. The film does something different with the character where he has some of his powers taken away and his forced to adapt to these new changes and he doesn’t have to fight an army of mutants. Instead he fights mostly humans and samurais and I found that refreshing. Please tell the cameraman to keep the camera still next time, Grace.
@BOGLEYKID11 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. I have heard Grace say time and again that comic book movies need to not just be seen as big budget summer films made for kids but also as respectable pieces of art in the medium. So why the hell would she complain if the actor in the lead wants to correctly act the role of his character and bring realistic acting to the genre itself?? Her reviews are always off anyway. I'm only subscribed so I don't have to search online for the new trailers when they come out.

Grace, This is NOT an X-Men film! And it shouldn't be. You are wrong to expect it to be. It is about Logan battling his inner suffering and trying to find something to live for (Mariko) This film was Very refreshing! It deserves an 8.5 at least!

I loved the fight choreography, mainly because it wasn't filled with special effects and the fights felt real and weren't too over the top (with the exception of the bullet train scene). I loved The Wolverine, i loved it in a way that I didn't expect though, in that it wasn't a huge spectacle superhero film.

One disappointment I had was that Logan didn't have some sort of samurai training montage, when he loses his healing ability, I was expecting to "learn how to fight properly" to make up for it, then get his power back in the finale.

Regarding why the Mariko-Wolverine love story is in there, I have two possible reasons. The first is that it was in the 1982 miniseries storyline. The second is that I imagine this love story is meant to help Wolverine heal after losing Jean Grey. I got the impression that although Wolvie is still not over Jean, his relationship with Mariko has shown him that he doesn't have to keep pining only for her--he can move on.

I agree. Nowhere did this movie lead you to believe it would be an epic mutant showdown. Granted the ninja sequence at the end was a bit of a letdown, but the progression of Jackman's character was the best of all the x-men movies. And the whole bit with Mariko is getting slammed by Grace? Maybe it wasn't done to perfection, but she was huge role in this movie. Did we forget how much Logan suffered Jean's death? Did we forget Logan found a reason to live again without Jean haunting him? C'mon...

I would love to hear a discussion of how the box office on this film played out, essentially, American Bomb, and a World hit, effectivly making the American Box office redundant. That has got to effect movies going forward. I've heard that Dick Tracy actully played like this, a big hit overseas, and kind of convinced studios that there was a lot more money in the foreign market than they had imagined. Don't know if that's true, but it gives you pause.

Great Review. I personally thought that The Wolverine was only an ok movie. No matter what Fox has done, it's never felt like the Wolverine that I know and grew up loving (and all my friends concur). I also felt that the trailer gave too much away and would have loved to see either: a better twist, better plot, more dynamic cinematography/FX or just better setting shots. I enjoyed the mid-credit scene, but still not a fan of Singer's XMEN (C+). Thanks for the review :)

The movie didn't feel like a huge summer block buster but still putting aside the lack of stunning visuals and change fight scenes, the story was well told and every fight scene and lines of dialogue between the characters felt like they were evolving the story in someway. The ending was a bit cliched but for the most part it was really well done. I would give it a 8.5 /10.

You know Grace, I noticed that we note the same things in movies but a lot of times have different reactions. Like, I noticed that there were not a lot of special effect in the fight scenes, but I think that was a good thing as Japan is like that quote in the movie "One foot in the past and one foot in the future." (tokyo excluded). I noticed that there were not a lot of mutants, but that allowed me to get emotionally attached to each one. Overall, I think the movie was excellent.

hmmm, have to admit. I liked the movie, I liked the non action parts and some of the action parts. but, I feel as though this story didn't need the big effects portions of the movie. To be honest, they felt out of place in that real world setting they were going for. It made wolverine's character mysterious. which was actually what made me like it the most.

I only watched it just to keep up with the franchise, and have to say loved it. I felt the more personal take in direction was a very welcome relief to usual action packed adventures. In fact I probably could have gone with fewer action scenes (especially tone down the final fight). And although there were only what two main [SFX] mutants in the whole film, I don't think it needed anymore. It was a great side story to the whole good mutants vs bad mutants vs humans war storyline of X-men.

^THIS. It's why I never liked any of the original trilogy. They came off "cheap". Hell, the only reason I LOVE X-Men Origins is because Gambit is in it.. But I think FOX is learning its lesson. With the next film, X-Men Days of Future Past, they're combining the shitty original with the new awesome First Class to apparently "fix their mistakes" from the original films And with films like X-Force being confirmed with Domino and Cable, I can only hope we finally get a live appearance of Psylocke

I honestly loved this movie, great plot (for the better half of the film). Great performances throughout. The only thing I didn't like was the tacked on fights at the end, which were not very exciting (especially compared to earlier fight scenes) but also it seemed to confuse what was up until then a fairly cohesive plot. So yeah I loved it but the last 20-30 minutes really seemed out of place.

Viper is a new character. Mariko was the love interest in the comic. Shingen was the main villain in the comic. If they had stuck to the comic they would've had all the ninja battles they could've hoped for, no other mutants, no silver samurai and a compelling story.

Grace, The reason people don't like the X-Movies is because the special effects outweigh the character development and story. It's always new flash characters instead of focusing on who they already have. I think you're a little too into special effects, while they're cool and help to create a cool story they shouldn't overpower or cover up sub par story telling.
