Dahomey was wealthy and it thrived on selling slaves to European traders. King Gezo, who ruled the kingdom between 1818 and 1858, explicitly said that the slave trade was “the source and the glory” of his people’s wealth. However, to the detriment of African history, The Woman King conceals Dahomey’s participation in the transatlantic slave trade between 1715 and 1850.. It suggests that Dahomey was, in fact, an anti-slavery kingdom, when it certainly wasn’t. The film also portrays the Agodjie as freedom fighters, while they were just ordinary soldiers who captured and sold slaves. It is, essentially, a deeply sanitised version of the sombre truth about slavery and 19th-century Africa, replete with sweet and melodramatic nostalgia for an Afrocentric fantasy. IGNORANCE IS BLISS

1) @1:30 Dahomey had more firearms than Oyo could even dream of. Dahomey had been a full musketeer force along with the Ashanti Empire, Akwamu Empire, Denkyira, since the 1700s. 2) @7:02, the Abomey city walls actually had mini towers with musketeer guards and cannons were mounted on top. These are small details but they take away how sophisticated Dahomey actually was.

@@jaffacalling53 "Yes, I'm disappointed they didn't show the sophisticated slavery system their civilization was built on." Slavery was toned down in the movie but slave trading is the main theme of the film. Particularly, the main characters try to get King Ghezo to switch to palm oil instead of slave trading by the end. However, I suspect that the movie takes great inspiration from the real Dahomey Fly Party in the 1840s who tried to get King Ghezo to switch from slave trading to palm oil. But the movie ignored the British blockade in the 1850s which was what enabled the Fly Party to emerge dominant over King Ghezo and his Elephant Party (the party that wanted to maintain slave trading.)

lmao .... This movie is just sad. So in this movie the women are fighting the same people who ended slavery in Africa. Plus it did leave out the slave traders in reality that were also black and muslim. These movies are not even close to the actual history of the nation or what actually happened there. All fiction. Now even if there was a great women fighter that threw over all KINGS there. Doubtful but lets just say for the sake of movie there was. So was she fighting with the muslims of that time enslaving her own native fellow people? Or was she fighting just the French that were actually fighting against slavery at the time. See my point here. Once again a movie made by a hypocrit eto make a point that is so incorrect it puts them on the other side of the argument/

Having written and researched a fair bit about historical accuracy and film for college, I usually don't really care about films taking historical liberties. After all, I'm here to be entertained, and the less the film reminds me of my professors the better. That being said: there is absolutely a wrong way to go about doing it, and The Woman King certainly steps into that category. The Dahomey were not only one of the most integral parts of the African side of the Triangle Trade, but they were prolific in their raiding and capturing of African neighbors; heck, they became a fairly wealthy empire in the 1700's to the early 20th century (when France conquered them), with pretty much the Oyo Empire being the only comparable power in the region. Almost every single part of that wealth came from engaging with the Triangle Trade. For a brief time, it is true that a king of Dahomey entertained selling more palm oil and fewer slaves to Europe in an effort to increase commercial relations, and it is accurate that groups that were to some degree related to the Dahomey Amazons were heavily in favor of that resolution. But what The Woman King tries to do that I cannot sanction is the film breezing thru the fact that the Dahomey Amazons were usually at the forefront of the raiding parties, capturing and selling slaves on behalf of the king. They were not some hugely independent segment of the population; and a significant number of the Amazons were conscripted or forced into the military. The Woman King does well in painting the Oyo Empire and the main male side of Dahomey as eager to continue in the slave business, and as such reaches a shockingly good level of historical recreation. But the entire impetus for the film - that the Dahomey Amazons were as nearly independent of the king as the later Janissaries in the Ottoman Empire and that under this fictional character, a huge part of the Dahomey military force suddenly became abolitionists - is so rank with modern sensibilities that it becomes actually frustrating to watch. At the bottom line, I can accept almost any historical inaccuracy about small events; but when a film imagines up a "modern" hero to completely misrepresent a significant element of a highly controversial part of history is when I begin to fidget in my seat.

Its not based on lies! It based on the period Dahomey won their independence from the Yoruba empire of OYO in 1823. The only thing they had changed was the battle at the end of the movie. Agojies attacked Ouidah much later than that when king Bahenzin decided to stop letting white people coming into the palace and many more actions around 1890 ( it was the beginning of the end of the Dahomey empire). For many people Dahomey is only about slavery trade and all the negatives stories. There are so many layers and things to know! The movie is not perfect, but it is actually accurate! Don't just read the bit where the french won, read also the bit where the french said how brave, well trained and fierce they were. And btw the slave trade by dahomey represent only 3%. So please inform yourself, especially if you are a black person!
