I agree with this, I find that I (and probably most everyone) can open my phone's PIN without looking, or occasionally automatically type passwords when presented with a text entry field without even thinking about it. It was probably so natural for her to just type it out, no extra thought needed!

The left and right hemispheres of the brain control the opposite side of the body but one hemisphere is responsible for speech where the other is not. This might be a bit insensitive, but considering that both of her fugue states ended with her waking up in bodies of water, it's likely that she's dead and is in a river or lake. However, it can't be said for certain that she's dead, she could still be out there.

My father disappeared in 1965. It was a relatively normal day. He left the gas station that he owned to pick up lunch for his employees. He never returned. He remained missing for one year, eventually being found in California....thousands of miles away from our home in South Louisiana. He swore until his death that he had no recollection of what had transpired in the year that he was missing. Could this story provide an answer??? Some understanding??? I think that the disappearances corresponding with when she started new jobs is super important. That can be a super stressful change, and for people who dissociate due to trauma, stress can result in dissociating and going on "autopilot" to protect themselves. Her tendency to appear close to bodies of water could indicate that she found water comforting or safe. Maybe had good memories associated with it. Regardless, I hope she's safe.

We're a multiple system and although we don't have DID/OSDD or amnesia, we do experience dissociation mostly adjacent to DP/DR. We were actually actively able to see how stress from working affected our system, we were all stressed and no one wanted to use the body because of how working affected our body and mind. I could honestly see someone prone to amnesia-related dissociation could get that triggered. I could also understand someone not realizing that's a trigger, we only realized it because we don't have amnesia and a few of us spoke up about how this was hurting us.

Why does everyone ignore the fact that both her and the mother were drawn to the water. It’s right there in our faces. Both of her fugue states brought her to the water and the 3rd time she was on an island- completely surrounded by water. And if you pause and read her mother’s story her mother was strangely drawn to the water to in her fugue state and questioned why she went to the water and why she felt so calm when she was near the waters. Not to mention Hannah often go to the beach when she wasn’t in her fugue state.

Hanna Upp was my little sister teacher and i would conistantly go to her class simply to talk to my sister but she was so sweet and i really hope that one day they at least find her body or find out what happen to her. I once had a friend who had past trauma that caused dissociative episodes and they never knew what the traumatic experience was that caused it and their doctors had said it was likely repressed since it happened in early childhood, so that could be why Hannah couldn’t think of any past trauma. Or it could be from something very normalized in her religious household. (I realize I’ve been speaking about this friend in the past tense but don’t worry they aren’t dead as far as I know they just weren’t very kind to me as a friend and would constantly excuse mental diagnosis to get out of facing consequences when they would act extremely toxic and would never make an effort to treat people like human beings)

I experienced a fugue state when I was 21. It was a horrifying experience - total black out. I had some childhood trauma buried deep. It's been almost ten years and I've done lots of therapy to help me build skills to stay out of a dissociative state. So thankful to be here and grounded.

I experienced a fugue state during a time when this stuff called "K2" was popular. It's actually a pretty scary feeling once you realize you don't know who you are, where you are, or why you're there. It's like spacing out while driving then you start to realize you don't know where you're going, how long you've been driving in that mental state, and if you've already missed your turn. You feel lost and can't understand how lost you are. It could last for minutes, or hours. But minutes can feel like hours in sometimes, right?

I have experienced something like this too on at least two occassions. One happened while at work during a stressful moment with a co-worker. I remember talking to them and then going to my locker. Next thing I knew I was standing outside my workplace. Just about 20 min had passed but the experience was very scary since I didn't know how I had changed my work clotges or gotten outside.

"Why did she disappear when starting a new job?" Perhaps, instead of stress, it was her mind being unable to adapt to the new jobs. After all, a new job is a pretty big thing for most people - new routines, people, locations, _procedures_ . Perhaps these changes were enough to cause a confusion deep within her mind, and in turn, enough to trigger a fugue state. I'm no psychologist but that doesn't sound so far fetched to me.

Honestly, I feel like she maybe went swimming at the beach. If they found her dress, sandals, and purse at the beach, it would lead me to believe that she had a swimsuit on underneath her dress, which she took off, and then left her belongings in the sand to go swimming, maybe when the hurricane hit. If she got caught up in it, she wouldn’t be anywhere near St Thomas since she’d probably move with it. Forgive me if the dates don’t quite add up though, I’m a little fuzzy on when hurricanes hit. I am also partially leaning towards her committing suicide by drowning herself or something else involving water, but maybe she didn’t realize what she was doing if she was in a fugue state. Or she decided that she didn’t want to live with this disorder anymore. But I feel like, somehow, she ended up in that water.

I agree. I feel like if it weren’t for her history, this would be a closed case drowning. It was right before a hurricane (if I remember) which causes some crazy waves… she could have easily drowned either accidentally or purposely and the hurricane moved her body to a place it’ll never be found. Or she may have gone into a fugue state again… but I doubt she’s still on the island, it’s to small and 50k ppl is really not a lot.

It's mostly a case of wanting to live a normal life, I'm sure her friends and family did their best to convince her to take appropriate repercussions but I guess she didn't like living like that. Often times people with severe mental illnesses are dismissive of their own disabilities so they try their best to live their life ignoring it.

i feel like there has to be something related to her starting new jobs at new schools that's making her go into fugue states. i wonder if something traumatic happened to her in or around school when she was young that she's been able to successfully repress her whole life but once she was introduced to a new school environment as an adult teacher her fugue states were triggered by the repressed trauma being remembered, then once successfully repressed again she would come out of the fugue state. in other severe dissociative disorders like DID, a similar thing happens where someone encounters a trigger that takes them back to traumatic experiences, and the part of the brain that remembers that trauma will "take over" and cause a dissociative amnesia to prevent the person from remembering that experience. but while she was in this fugue state for the 3rd time there was an accident/misadventure resulting in her death or she was taken advantage of by someone who recognized she was vulnerable and that person caused her death.

I get dissociative amnesia from being an alter and I'm pretty sure you're correct. It might have been a new traumatic event or a flashback trigger that didn't turn off fast enough, either way, it must have been something truly horrible for such strong loss of memory.

Dissociative symptoms may not be hereditary, but trauma can be generational, especially if later generations give the same upbringing (including doctrine) that they themselves had. Dissociative conditions are most often signs of severe childhood trauma, and there are still a lot of causes of trauma that hide in plain sight because people are so used to downplaying the severity of certain parenting practices that inflict lasting psychological damage.

In its most basic form, it distances you from being mentally present during traumatic moments, sometimes becoming your main response to stress from then on. Some forms can happen consciously, others more often are involuntary reflexes. The more basic, the more likely it can happen voluntarily to cope. In its simplest case, you respond to stressful or trauma-related stimuli by suppressing your sense of emotion-- in my case, it's also caused a few rare periods where instead of emotion, the language center of my brain shut off for a while. Then there's dissociative amnesia. You block out the traumatic memory. You literally cannot handle the ordeal of this trauma, even if it's physically survivable. So, it never happened. There's just a blind spot in your memory. A missing day, week, month, year of your life, like it never happened. Even if someone else tells you what happened, all you can recall is being told about it. Sometimes, the catch is that you're still triggered by things associated with the blocked memory, and you may not realize it's a trigger. You might just think you have an irrational phobia. Some people even lose the memory of being triggered, so you don't even know what the trigger was and therefore can't try avoiding it. Sometimes, if the blocked trauma was a chronic situation, it can pretty much cause your memory to have rolling blackouts on and off for the rest of your life. A more self-destructive form of dissociation is depersonalization, which is often coupled by a depressive or manic spike if you're not feeling numbed out. These often happen for shorter spells, but you convince yourself that it doesn't matter how awfully you're suffering if [You] isn't a real person, just someone you made up for escape. In extreme cases, especially common with experiencing physical or sexual violence, the self-detachment becomes so intense that you become your own third-party observer. It's been described as like watching a movie about someone else with no relevance to You The Viewer. Depersonalization can go a few ways. As a trauma symptom, it's rarely alone. More often, it can pair with derealization. It's just as it sounds. Everything feels distant, muffled, like it's all actors and stage sets, or like you're just imagining the world around you, like you're in a dream or a VR. Gaslighting can especially cause this one. The next extreme case would be episodic delusions and/or hallucinations where the brain fills in its own reasoning for that sense of unreality, like it really is a dream, and it can be very hard to break out of without the right antipsychotic even if you're aware that it's happening. Another way it can go is dissociative identity. Even if it's not YOU that this is happening to, you're not equipped for processing this stimulus that aggravates your trauma, so YOU are compartmentalized into different personalities and the memories are divided up according to which facet was fronting (piloting) at the time. YOU can't remember this because that was [You] fronting at the time, therefore that was [You]'s memory, someone other than YOU, and [You] is just one of several cognitive constructs. Not all of them are aware of each other, some one them have internal dialogue with each other, some of their memories are shared, some announce that they'll switch soon while others don't, some are involuntary switched by a trigger. Some of them are manifestations of specific personal aspects or moods like conscience, survival, internalized abuse, childhood innocence, the self YOU aspire to become, the self that family expects YOU to become, etc., and because they're Different People, they're not bound to look like the "system" (YOU as a whole). They can present themselves with different names, genders, appearances, mannerisms and preferences. And they may reintegrate over time, or they may further fracture. The mind is complex and will go through a lot of loopholes if necessary to keep itself running. Sometimes those loopholes are bugs, and sometimes they're features. Sometimes therapy and recovery can rehabilitate a person so the dissociative X or Y isn't so debilitating, but it never goes completely away. You just learn how to manage it and its impact on your life.

Many of them suffer from bipolar, and one of the weirdest things I’ve noticed is how many of them won’t remember what they were doing but that they needed to find water. Including one case where someone was found missing in the middle of a stream in winter. It’s some strange and scary stuff. My worst nightmare

I have Porphyria - her stress induced fugue states sound a lot like mine. Mania accompanies them also - so it’s really difficult for outsiders to tell i’m in danger mentally. Drawn to nature and water - especially at night. As a young girl it can be hella dangerous, not to mention debilitating mind body and soul - Porphyria i mean. Due to where I live it’s very hard for me to find a professional that deals with DID within my price range but when speaking with other professionals such as Psychiatrists and Psychologists, they have suggested I do have it, due to already being diagnosed with some of the comorbidities of DID and having some of the symptoms

So twice, Hannah was drawn to water while in her fugue state. Then we learn that Hannah's mother went into a possible fugue state and also found herself at water. Why does this fugue state seem to make people want to enter the water? That's so creepy. I have a bad feeling that Hannah may have gone to water a third time. this is just depressing because dissociative states are caused by extreme abuse and she never fully gotten the help she needed if simply a new job was so triggering she had to cope by destroying her memories.
