As I mexican I would add that most of the responsibility of this issue comes from the corruption at the government and the poverty of some areas. But the media and the politicians target the videogames as the main issue instead of a media to contact the victims, also there is a lot of problems with the "narcocultura" as a form of media that displays the drug cartels as celebrities and role models to the young audience. Good job being respectful and serious about this issue, Jorge.

Free Fire is pretty popular here in México because it can run on low end phones pretty easiliy, which as you can tell, attracts cartels to try and get people on their side, since they don't usually have a lot of money. I know it sounded pretty classist, but it happens a lot, the cartel prays on poorly educated people as they don't really have lots of ways to have decent income.
@qoaa

It sucks that happens to games like that. It's really awesome to have game creators make games that can run good on lower end devices which makes gaming more accessible to all ages and incomes and not just for those that have the money to afford either an extremely expensive high end pc or one of the expensive sometimes hard to get gaming consoles. While I personally do own a ps5, I also have an old android tablet (Samsung galaxy tab s2) that I love playing Minecraft, XCOM, Terraria, and Don't Starve games on when away from home. Gamers, especially younger ones, do need to be careful when playing online, and no one should accept any real life job offers from strangers in a video game.

Parents don't always have the power though. Did you always listen to your parents? Sadly at some point some kids stop listening to their parents or teachers and do as they want anyway. Kids think they know better when they don't. Mom told me all the time that people I talk to online are probably bad news (they weren't, thankfully, I talk to them to this day, been around 18 years by now) and probably would never allow me to meet up with them back then but if I was particularly rebellious nothing would stop me from just lying about where I'm going to meet up with them. Especially since these kids are usually threatened by these people that they will hurt their family etc. You can see that in the first girl's case the mom literally forbid her from going anywhere but she left when mom wasn't around.

@@Jhud69There are right and wrong ways to teach online safety. Just saying everyone is evil and using scare tactics doesn't help at all, especially when it's obviously not true. Growing up I saw a few PSA's and news reports about strangers, texting, and online chatting. At first I was a little scared and figured I'd stay away from that stuff so it never happens to me, but as time went on I eventually started using them like everyone else, and I figured you'd have to be a moron to end up like one of those PSA victims. After all, the PSA's never made everyone out to be evil, they basically just said to think, have common sense, self-respect, and don't be a fool. I figure if you teach kids about common sense and self-respect early on, their desire to not be seen as an idiot will help way more than being fearmongered by hover parents. Even right now, everyone says "parents monitor your kids", but if you as a kid get frustrated by your hover parent and look up to see if anyone else has the same feelings, you're gonna find hundreds of posts about toxic control freak parents and how you shouldn't listen to them. Then you end up doing something stupid.

Unfortunately, people also can't do anything about all those criminal elements/abusers (as there are too many), but people CAN pass laws about video games, or try to physically control what their kids play. It's easy for people to demonize the video games and ignore the abusers, the TRUE problem... but the fact is, it's all people _can_ do... outside of teaching their kids about safety properly, I guess. Ideally, people should think critically, and know that predators can use any media and any platform, and one must be vigilant... but it's easier to just say video games are bad and blame it all on video games. (But to be fair, kids can be hard to teach too. It's easy to not believe something until it happens.) EDIT: Specifically for the situation in Mexico, maybe vigilance won't be good enough. But if you have a better solution, go ahead and mention it. I don't have a good solution there, but I'd think having critical thinking and vigilance is always better than NOT having critical thinking and vigilance.

I am Mexican, born and raised. The cartels bring a lot of pain to Mexican society. Virtually nobody is foreign to the pain they cause. But the real issue is the government corruption that allows them to continue existing, who forges alliances with them, who exploits them to cling to power and conduct business with them. There are endless examples at every level of government, by every administration from the 3 parties who have ruled the country in the past couple of decades. It has gotten so shameless and cynical, that it's impossible to ignore, and leads most Mexicans to apathy. Don't believe the American sensationalist narratives. The cartels don't run the country, nor are they the biggest problem.

Hey! Thank you for making this video. I am from the US and my best friend went vacationing to Mexico for summer break in 2019 and hasn’t been found, but was known to do hard drugs occasionally and the police went through her phone (she left it on her hotel bed) and saw some shady messages, which we think relate to the cartel. She is still missing to this day, and we miss her so much. Thank you for bringing up this topic. ❤️

And the media never has any kind of "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" hysteria about the Sims franchise, when the most depraved things imaginable are fun ways to spice up the game by most players, even without mods. There's literally a serial killer mod. You can kidnap people off the street and trap them in your basement to be your love slave and that's just with the base game! I play the sims, no shade, I just always think it's funny that it always escapes the "video games are making our children violent!" hysteria considering how insane some people are when they play it.
@giwake
@giwake 5 ай бұрын
i think it's because all of the games you mentioned came out in the 90s or 00s when video games were still considered to be children's entertainment, plus they were all major sellers made by studios who already had major success in the past and a ton of publicity (except for postal, but they did have a big showing at E3 which got featured on the news, which probably helped them sell copies) the first payday came out in 2011, when violent and more mature video games were more commonplace, and was by a small indie studio. plus, grand theft auto already kind of had the stereotype of being a game where you just rob banks and kill cops.

As a teacher in México i see this everyday, young kids with bad families and very little to loose leave school to join some cartel, they last less than a year "working" until they're found dead. I can see them, we see the signs, we do our best to educate them, we call their parents, and we still fail. It's hard to educate them when every day their own parents and friends play "narco corridos" and watch "narco series" on public tv.

I think this is the main problem of third world country, and that is caused by poverty: People go to school and uni cause they're wanna get off from poverty, when they found a "shortcut way" to be a rich, then they will choose that way. I think, one of solution for this case is encourage young Mexican to going study (or chasing their dreams) in abroad, for sure this way need a government and all support. This is looks so impossible, but I think avoid "bad environment" is one of ways to cut this vicious circle. Btw, I really amaze and respect with your choice, mate. This saddens me immensely. I have a feeling that a fair portion of the cartel are actually good people just driven into doing things simply out of poverty. Unfortunately, that is a pattern. A lot of people who come from abusive households or a place of poverty end up participating in things they otherwise never would have. But of course, the cartel is also full of horrific people. The government being so corrupt certainly just makes things so much easier for those groups to be so powerful and oppressive.

Case 5 doesn't really make sense logistically. According to the story the girl was recruited to drive to Mexico from Phoenix and it sounds like she was stopped going into Mexico with the meth in the gas tank, I would expect them to be moving the product from Mexico and into the US. Based on my knowledge of the drug trade, this isn't surprising to me, in some parts of the US there's a huge meth problem, The Midwest and Southwest region of the US are notorious for meth labs, US drug gangs would illegally export them, making boatloads of money in black markets around the world, The only thing I'm surprised about, is the fact that they somehow convinced her to do it.
@JackParsons2

@@OatmealGrillBlazer That used to be the case years ago until the US cracked down on imports if the raw ingredients used to make meth. Nowadays 99% of the meth is manufactured in super labs in Mexico where they can import raw ingredients by the ton. They make the highest quality meth now and import it to the US in either crystal or liquid form. I live in central Texas along the I35 corridor where tons of the stuff comes up from Laredo and the other border towns so we have regular busts of people moving it north to distribute through the country. Normally the only thing going south is cash or guns for the cartels. There is no logical reason to snuggle meth into Mexico, it's not only in greater demand in the US but we just can't make a better product than the cartels now because of how hard it is to get ephedrine here in the States.

That is a reason i think that corridos tumbados are as big as they are now, all the kids growing up during that era are adults or about to be. The cartels "mostly" will kill each other or marina (even tho a Marina can average 30 cartel men kills) but civilians do get in the way.
