One of the most enjoyable 51min and 43sec I've had the pleasure of watching. An incredible era with incredible people. What the world these days seems very short of.

My Uncle was an RAF Spit pilot, my father was in the Royal Armoured Corps, My Grandfather and his three brothers were all Artillery during WW1 and my mother made ammunition in WW11. I served in the armored Corps for 16 years and my son did 10 years in the Army including a tour in Iraq. All of us survived our service. I too shed a tear often when I remember the sacrifices many made including all of the men and women behind the scenes who secretly made the equipment used in battle.

My mother was one of the first women to load ammunition onto the Spitfires in Paisley Scotland I believe. Later in England she worked in factories that were bombed while she was there. Amazing woman.

This documentary has made me want to know more about the Hurricane as well. It was Spitfires and Hurricanes together early in the war equally fighting the Luftwaffe.
@butchshirley32567 күн бұрын
There were more Hurricanes than Spits and they shot down more Germans than the Spits. The Hurricane was slower but could out turn the German fighters. The M109 could out-climb both the Hurricane and the Spitfire and was faster in a dive but the bravery of the allied pilots somehow got them through. The Hurricanes mostly concentrated on the bombers while the Spitfires tried to keep the fighters of their backs.

Loved this movie. I had heard of women help with aircraft in Britain, but had no idea they were actually building them and flying them. Incedible war effort. God bless all the ladies & gents who did the incredible work.

Carol from Philadelphia : I love this so much, I knew there was so much that the UK and other allies did. I am tired of hearing about what US did during the war (not at all to suggest that they weren't excellent ) but I still like to hear about contributions from all allies.

Thank you for your even-handedness. There were several Americans who did sterling work in the RAF during the battle of Britain, well before the USA entered the war. Side note for you - in Canada (I'm a Canadian) EVERY person who fought overseas was a VOLUNTEER. There was conscription (Canadian version of the draft) but aside from a few conscriptees who wound up in England guarding prisoners of war, none served overseas.

Not only were women vital on the production line and delivery, they were some of the very best engineers designing the machines. The Spitfire would have been even better with fuel injection which gave at least a 10% fuel range advantage. if Beatrix Schilling, who worked for the Royal Aircraft Establishment and who later designed fuel injection for the Merlin and Griffon, had been allowed to develop a system in the 30's for the fighter then it would have probably resulted in more pilots getting home. But some top man at the said institute was against fuel injection so carburettors were used even though many top designers during the 30's well knew the advantages fuel injection gave. The Germans had more fore sight.

The greatest generation, for sure. Blessed with leaders like Churchill who inspired the entire country to all pull together to defeat Hitler and the Axis. Britain brought a lot of important technologies including Radar and the mathematics work at Bletchley Park, the Merlin engine, nuclear physics leading to the Manhattan Project and many others. Many people did extraordinary things.
