The Wonderful 1977-1978 Dodge Monaco

An often overlooked car of the 1970s was the 1977-1978 Dodge Monaco. Though it served a utilitarian purpose for most of those who bought one back in the day, it was a very special car that deserves a special place in automotive history.

Back in 79, I ran across a 1978 Monaco. It was ordered for a dodge executives wife. It called royal monaco brougham. Triple black, with a 440 special marked on the air cleaner lid. All kinds of good stuff in it. 8 track built in console, tissue dispenser under pass dash,etc. Had earlier muscle cars, but this one would run for a 78. Great concert car and good memories. I think I paid $3400 for it. Awh the good old days.

Side by side comparison of the B body and R body reveals that they have the same doors with different glass and less tumble home. Very clever camouflage job. I compared my 1975 Coronet to a 1981 Chrysler Newport some years ago. I can’t imagine ever having that opportunity again. Only dozens probably remain running today.

The 1975 Dodge Coronet 4-door and the 1981 Chrysler Newport had nearly identical wheelbase and width dimensions. Chrysler just redesigned the exterior and interior of the 4-door models and eliminated the 2-door and wagon models of the B-body when they developed the R-body for the '79 model year..

I got my license in the very early 80s. The 440 Monacos were coming into to the used car market and a few of my peers snagged 'em Truly terrifying cars, all power with mediocre brakes and handling even though they were ex cop cars. Especially fun in Chicago winters.

@@ercsan a 69 charger 440 has a lot more horsepower than a 77-78 440. Remember everything basically got a compression and horsepower downgrade in ~ 1975.

These are awesome cars and I'm so glad I kept my plastic model kit versions of the four-door sedan variation! This was one of my dream cars, to own a 440 V8/727 Torqueflite equipped unmarked cop car version!

I have a 72 Dodge Coronet. It's a great car. A reliable 318 and 727 transmission, absolutly no rust and bondo, AC and a nice interior. I bought it in 2017 when I was in highschool for 3k and it still runs fine today.

Sitting in my driveway is a powder blue 78 Plymouth Fury. It was a North Carolina state interceptor so it's got the police 440, 100 amp alternator, coolers for everything, 700 cfm thermoquad carb, header type exhaust manifolds and dual exhaust. Connected to it is a 727 transmission and a positraction rear end. Need to restore it to it's former beauty.

I had one of these with the "U" code 440 HP eng. Wish I'd never sold it. Inability to hold wheel alignments aside, it was more fun than a person should be allowed to have. The powertrain on that car was as close to indestructible as ever could be.

We had a 1971 Coronet Custom wagon and a 1975 Coronet Custom sedan. The sedan was in Sherwood Green Metallic which was the same color as our county police department. I got away with a lot driving it as many thought I was the police! I loved that car, and can understand the affection for the Monaco of the B body. Thanks for this trip down memory lane.

I have a 78 County Detective version Monaco in my shop right now. it needs a windshield. The police goodies are where it's at for this platform. Built back when Police package meant something besides an extra battery and more wire connectors under the dash like they do nowdays. Rear ends on Police cars were 9.25" lockers with 3.23 gears. heavy duty trans cooler lines, oil coolers, bigger radiator, bigger front disc brakes, bigger torsion bars and a few other tweeks on the suspension, 140mph speedo, full gauges, and some other variations depending on who and where it got ordered for. Mine is blue on blue on blue. I have the 3 spoke steering wheel, but I have seen other police versions with the standard "padded" wheel too. They all have the special tags under the hood so you know if it was ordered with the parts or not. Most have a special paint tag too. I love the car. If you look at the main body of the 4 doors, the design goes back to 71. Chrysler was very clever on how they added the 5mph bumpers, they blend into the car design quite well compared to many others. These cars, if you work on them a little, are not nearly as heavy as people think they are and especially compared to some of the competition. The 400 police 4bbl. that was in mine was a total lost cause, I am dropping a 383 into it for now until I can put a proper 400 back in.

When I was a kid my parents bought a brand new 1966 Monaco 4 door sedan in dark turquoise with matching interior and the spinner style wheel covers. It was gorgeous. The chrome really popped against that paint. There weren’t to many on the road sadly. We drove all over the country in that car on our summer vacations. It always attracted attention, even when new - on guy even asked if it was a custom! It was our favorite family car. I remember when we traded it in on a new 71 Dodge my mom cried all the way to the dealership and made my dad drive around the block when we got there for “one last ride “. I really want to buy one, but they almost never come up for sale in sedan guise….

A lot of police departments kept their 360 and 440 Monaco's well into the 80s. Seems the 255 equipped LTDs were wheezing out at 85mph, when equipped with roof mounted light bars. Remember going by one in passing gear, as he was topped out chasing someone who was already in the next county. Wouldn't have pulled that stunt on a Monaco or Fury. Malcolm Ottawa Valley

the other issue was the 318 powered Diplomats. Both dogs helped create the Mustang HP package (later SSP) and Chevy a 1LE Camaro option. The Nova 9-C-1s looked good in comparison.

@@albertgaspar627 yeah I remember my disbelief when they went to the 5.0 liter notchbacks as chase down vehicles. Kind of useless as you couldn't chuck the perp in the back. Never saw a police Nova up here. Few 360 Volare police cars and plenty of gutless 267/305 police Malibus. My cop friends hated those useless trunks. One year of the M-body in square form, came with the 360 and that was 1980. Used a 360 three core police rad when I swapped in a Thermoquaded 360/727 into a Fifth Avenue in the early 90s. @@malcolmhamilton5200 Most officers across the map hated the downsizing of family sedans, when you carry that "battle rattle" around your waist. and the Mustang does not have a large interior once you add in a computer. As you noticed, it had one purpose only--pursuit. In CA it soon became known as the "Mustang that chases Porsches for a living". There were enough rich elites in fast foreign cars who made a game out of trying to outrun the 318 powered Dodge Diplomat cop cars. The Mustangs put an end to that, moreso than a Z28 Camaro pursuit package that still weighed nearly 3,800 lbs and had I think 180 hp or something. The Novas at least had a power-to-weight ratio, and the 9-C-1 package gave them the WS6 suspension parts off that year's Trans Am for handling. but it was still a unibody car, no perimeter frame/coil spring ride. The Mopar E58 code 360 had guts, Mopar used it for their Lil Red Express muscle pickup. Of course you found out for yourself :) The 360 didn't get the respect it deserved back then since a 340 was still affordable, but now folks "get it", like with Ford's 351Windsor engine.

I agree. You couldn't give away 351 Windsor's in the 70s. On the street the Cleveland's needed more cam, compression and gas to truly make power, all of which were becoming scarce back then. I had a 5.0 liter EFI'd 86' Bronco and 90' Town Car, both of which I did a few mods the Mustang guys taught me. Long story short the Broncos mileage almost doubled and none of my Chevy buddies would believe me it wasn't a 5.8 Windsor, as it bested their TBI 350s handily. That huge tank got me from Ottawa to Toronto, back, back to Toronto and almost back in one fill up. As a lifetime Mopar guy I was thoroughly impressed when it smoked a Maxima 0-60 on an on ramp one day. The 360, like you say, was ignored by us Mopar types until 340s started getting scarce. Once people like Ed Hamburger started selling ots of stuff for it, and Direct Connection, it became my favourite. Watch any Cascar race and coming out of every corner ahead, because of their unfair torque advantage, is a 360. Beauty was they were so cheap and plentiful in rotting Cordobas and worthless station wagons and luxury barges I rarely had to pay for a good running one. Deck the block or buy the higher compression pistons and you were good to go. Anywhere a 318 had been the 360 would bolt in. As long as you could swap in an MP distributor and take the time to truly dial in the vacuum advance, you actually got better mileage than stock.

I love these cars. For about 20 years I have owned a '78 Monaco 2-door police pursuit vehicle, Ex- Nebraska Highway patrol. 8 or 9 were made for the state that year. I drove it every day for a couple years but it was rough, really rough, and it has basically been parked in my barn for over a decade. I recently got the idea that it's time to tear it down for a full rebuild/restomod. It's a very rare car, even though not highly desirable. It deserves a better fate than the junkyard.

Police department personnel admired the mid to late 70s MoPar Squads so very much, that when they began rotating out the older Chrysler Squads due to high mileage, the coppers would drive out of roll call in the new gutless squad, Park it a few blocks away from HQ, and then drive their old buddy MoPar all day, reversing the set up at night, driving the anemic new squad back to HQ for the next shift, they really drove the old Mopes into the ground! When an officer was in bad trouble, yelling "10-33"!!! "Officer down"! Into his radio, cops have told of the comfort they felt, hearing the Belly Roar of a Big Block MoPar coming at them from blocks away, even before they heard the siren. These cars you picture here are LEGENDARY! I know, back in the 80s, I bought a 1977 Wisconsin State Patrol Lieutenant Cruiser at the auction in Madison Wisconsin, it had the 440 Police Interceptor, heavy duty police tires, rims, brakes, suspension, sway bars, cooling, hi amp alternator, cop transmission, cop dual exhaust, and electric trunk button by the dash, to access an Ithaca 12 gauge riot gun packed in the Lieutenant's trunk... Paid $845.00 US Dollars for that magnificent beast, traded her for a Kawasaki H2 drag bike in 1986. The Fury was gun metal grey, with a tan cop interior. And yes I miss her badly. So long. I'm 10-10, 10-7 on the side, EOW.

I saw many of this wonderful cars in series of the 80's when I was a kid. The 77-78 Dodge Monacos , are extremely beautiful, elegant and powerful. For me, this are the most beautiful car ever, even comparing to Ferraris or else. I don't care, I will allways prefer the 77-78 Monacos, over all other, even the moderns ones.

The R Body cars like the St. Regis were still on the B-Body chassis. Same as the Monaco, Coronet, and Satellites. The St. Regis was only a 4 Door Sedan and didn't have a wagon or 2 door car. The 2 door for the St. Regis would have been the 79 Dodge Magnum. St. Regis and Royal Monacos were mostly "fleet cars" for Chrysler. What killed the St. Regis was the quality control. They had the most problems per car for Chrysler in 1979. The Chevy Caprice and Impala were al new in 1977. The 1979 Ford LTD was also all new. Full sized cars were also impacted by the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis which caused gas lines at gas stations to return. Chrysler was close to bankruptcy when the St. Regis was sold before the K-Cars in 1981. Also Reagan bring down oil prices in the early to mid 1980s brought back full sized cars. The Dodge Monaco and Plymouth Fury of 1977 and 1978 were "dated" cars but were dependable and a good value. Wish so many didn't get destroyed in Tv shows and movies.

I had a 74 Satellite. I hit a huge trophy deer with a big rack broadside at 70 MPH. That deer flew so high that I didn't see it land. I did hear the impact absorbers for the bumper absorbing for all they were worth. They made a sound. My 74 Satellite was undamaged. Not even a headlight or blinker lens broke or even cracked. They could have made a plaster cast of the impact on the deer and it would have come out as the front of that wonderful car. Everything you said about these cars is oh so true! They are my favorite cars!

I have a 1975 4dr export model 225ci 3 speed manual ^^ with no power steering. Loved this car seen in tons of movies and tv shows from the eighties. Got 28 MPG at 60 mph out of this one with no ecomod on it, so I think I'll break easily the bar of the 30's mpg ^^ . Trully an awesome daily driver. I've cleaned / made the brakes working again so I can move it to start the body work on it.

Our town used Chrysler police products thru the mid 80s. In the 70s, our police and fire chief specially ordered 400 P code and 440 U code equipped B cars, even for just patrollers. Our mayor asked 1 time why such thirsty engines to putt around town in...The police chief of the time said "Well, just like our side arms, it's "just in case". Classic! Sadly, HollyWood destroyed most of these cars.

Late 70's to Early 80's Mother had the wagon. Always remember riding in the back with my sister.... And watching Drive-In Movies out the back with the hatch down. And tho I was born in 74, I remember watching the Exorcist ( tho it says it cam3 out in 73 ), Salem's Lot, Rabid and Many More Horror Movies.

@@JrGoonior My dad had a ‘79 Chrysler 300 (they revived it for this one model year). White with a red leather interior. That yeeeteeeteeeteee starter was as recognizable as the ‘75 Plymouth Scamp we had before it. I was only 11 back then and it seemed like that car was rocket. Fast forward and I’m depressed to learn how slow it really was. No regrets though. I wish I could own that car today.

Great video that brought good memories for me. When I was kid we had a Venezuelan-built 1976 Dodge Special Edition. It was basically a 1976 Coronet with the 360 V8 and Torqueflite, vinyl roof and all the bells and whistles (cassette player, power windows, locks, front seat, and antenna, etc...). It featured a blacked out Plymouth Fury front grille, instead of the Coronet's split grille. Actually it was marketed as a "Special Edition", without the Coronet name, for some reason. We loved that car. In 1977 Chrysler of Venezuela updated the "Special Edition" to the Dodge Monaco look, complete with wide vinyl side trim and of course the double-deck square front lights and redesigned tail lamps. They continued calling it "Special Edition", with no mention of either Coronet or Monaco.

It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.

@OldCarMemories it was so much more than the affordable Cordoba in 2 door, so much more than a twin to the awesome Fury and so much more than just "the Dodge". The Monaco of 1977/78 was all Chrysler products in one. It could do it all from 225 to 440. Remember... Chrysler always severely underrated the Horsepower and the fuel efficiency of its engines in the 1970's. Loyalty is everything. Hence the sales numbers of this great line of great cars. Thank You.

I have a very nice 78 Fury sedan with 24k miles on it I got from FL back in 05. Pretty much the same but I like the cleaner look of the 1 piece plymouth grille better. On the Fury Wikipedia page my car is the brown '78 Fury I took at a rest stop driving it up from FL to WI that October.

I bought a 78 base model used 225 slant that was one tuff son of a gun,however it wasn't fast...lol

Those 225 equipped Monacos were great cars. The 225 may not have been fast but it ran forever (in many cases more miles than the V8) and got great gas mileage.
