The marriage of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip on the 20th November 1947 was supposed to be a low-key family affair, but it became an extraordinary moment of celebration to raise the spirits of a world broken by war. Brought to life through stunning colour archive, and with access to exclusive behind the scenes footage, this landmark documentary tells the story of how the wedding captured the hearts of a nation. It celebrates the contributions of all those who made the wedding such a unique occasion, from those on the inside including members of the royal family, through to the jewellers and dressmakers. At the heart of the film are stunning recreations of the engagement ring and the wedding cake.
From Elizabeth II to Cleopatra, Real Royalty peels back the curtain to give a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential families in the world, with new full length documentaries posted every week covering the monarchies of today and all throughout history.

I remember as a little girl being taken to see the then Princess Elizabeth's wedding dress which toured the country after the wedding. The post-war years were terribly drab: bomb sites, rationing of clothes and food, shortages of fuel etc. so the sight of this beautiful dress, sparkling with crystals, subtly lit in a glass case, was utterly breathtaking - the sort of dress that I had seen only in pictures of fairy princesses in my story books - a wonderful memory.

Same for my grandfather. from no radio to the moon landing. He almost made it to cell phones. So much in their lives. I didn't even have a cell phone until I was an adult. The moon landing is my first memory because I was the youngest. I was 3 years of age, but I had much older siblings and it was HUGE in our home.

i like that The Queen was held in such high regard even as a princess that people from all over, from all walks of life, were willing to give what little THEY had in order for the princess to "have her day" with all the trimmings of a wedding day. THAT'S really cool and the kind of character that could be found.....back in the day.

I do wish they would make it clear to people that Elizabeth did not PAY for her dress with coupons. That idea has gotten hold, especially here in the states, among people who know very little history. I see often on programs that the princess was so frugal that she paid for her dress with coupons. Of course, one paid for the items one bought, but had to produce ration coupons to give you Permission to purchase an item. The coupons did not take the place of cash. It was indeed a beautiful dress, and the details were in the embroidery scalloped down the flared skirt.

The Wedding bouquet was 'misplaced after the actually wedding'. They even re-took some of the wedding pictures later as she didn't have her bouquet in the pictures. ❤️It's all shown on the youtube video. It even shows her posing without the bouquet which was clearly awkward to her & everyone. Then it showed them posing to retake some pictures when the replacement bouquet arrived during their Honeymoon. They returned & retook pictures. The original Wedding bouquet that she carried down the aisle was NEVER located. The video is great. It even showed how the bouquet was made and all the different flowers & how they were arranged & held on & together. All her flowers were actually grown within British Aisles. It had Orchids, Myrtle & more. The Video on KZbin called: How Post War Britain Shaped The Queen's Wedding is so interesting. Worth the watch. ❤️ I think they've had backup bouquets since for some brides. I didn't catch who though.

Someone absolutely took it, no doubt. Sounds like just the sort of item a young girl would prize. The bouquet that was placed on the Queen's casket after her death, included sprigs of myrtle from her personal garden. That myrtle was from her wedding bouquet - the replacement one, I am guessing.

Prince Philip's mother didn't exactly SACRIFICE her tiara, I don't think. She was already a Greek Orthodox nun by that stage, so she wouldn't have been wearing the tiara ever again anyway. They take vows of poverty, like the Roman Catholic and Anglican nuns all used to. She probably gave it to her son with a great deal of love, that it would be carried on in a new way. This was a spectacular show!

The Queen's life of service should remind everyone of the huge, tangible power for peace and stability the British monarchy is for everyone in Britain, the commonwealth and for the world. In the 19th & 20th centuries the U.S.A, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Greece suffered in various ways civil wars, political storms, and dictatorships. This shows what can go wrong in the absence of a head of state which is above politics, which opposes illegal dictatorship and helps keep the peace. If there are many reasons England, Wales, Scotland, Canada and Australia, have had no civil war since Culloden in 1746, having a constitutional monarchy is an important one. Of course the Queen & Prince Philip had their failings as parents, and Prince Philip could be tactless. Whatever mistakes the royal family have made, let us be grateful for the service he gave, and the difference the monarchy makes for the better, in everybody's lives.

As well you should. Dressmakers and seamstresses the world over were horrified at the designer's choicenof taffeta. If you recall all those *wrinkles* in the overskirt of her dress, that was due to the taffeta that was used. Absolutely no one considered that a dress of that size would have to be folded around her in the carriage on the way to the church, and that that material would most definitely wrinkle monstrously. Her veil, earrings and shoes were quite lovely, but her dress suffered another issue that Princess Anne's and Fergie's did - they were designed to be "modern" dresses and so reflected the atrocious style of the time, not one timeless, tried and true line between them. In this manner the dresses have aged terribly.

Truly the GREATEST part of this bygone era, is the fact of there being zero forced societal diversity amongst the People of Great Britain at that time. This point is most emphatically being the reason GB was so successful & respected as a then, modern society. They aspired to be truly GREAT back then. Today being so ridiculously "diverse" has utterly tossed their once legendary greatness down the loo...

What i don't understand is why, in a time where ingredients were in such short supply that they had to be donated and brought in from all over the world, they decided to make a cake that was apparently nearly ten times as big as it needed to be. If it was big enough to feed a thousand people, but they only served a hundred, that's incredibly wasteful, especially when food is being rationed.
@dguerra3904
@dguerra3904 Жыл бұрын
Why? It was because of Love, that is why. The Love of the people for their Princess and future Queen. And her love of her people. So many donated and did not expect anything in return except to know their Princess knew of their love for her...and she shows that love by using what her people sent to her for her special day. Had the cake been smaller it would have said she didn't need her people and she knew she would need her people for her entire reign as well as her special day And it was special ..it was special for the rest of her life. I can only feel hopeful that they are once again gazing into each other's eyes like they did that special day when the Future Queen honored her people by using what they so willing gave of themselves. And, not only did she honor that love from her people on that day, she continued to honor her people til the day she left this plane of existence. Her people love her still.
