I think that the reason why Sailor Pluto dolls had darker skin is because in the original manga, her skin is noticeably darker. For one reason or another the anime (maybe the studio struggled with mixing the colour back then taken into the account how inconsistent the colouring of her skin was, maybe it was laziness, maybe it was a poor attempt to cut time and cost) opted to make her skintone very light

Great video, Sailor Moon dolls are so extensive it can be confusing as hell to catalogue them all. Additional fun notes! The R season dolls have unique face screenings (which is funny because you have to look really carefully notice the differences between them, but Mars has more narrow eyes, Venus has a more mature looking face, etc) and they all have hollow limbs which make the dolls all very light and their limbs are prone to warping. The goal of producing these I think was to keep the dolls extremely affordable because Japan was in a recession. The oversizedness of the clothing I think was also to help young children play with the dolls because their outfits had a lot of pieces compared to a standard playline doll. The talking dolls were just a few centimeters taller than the other Bandai Japan dolls to accommodate the speaker box in their torso. The S Season Sailor Team dolls had way more detailed faceups than the R season ones :) I still want those Amazones Quartet dolls *_* Bobagirl was my gateway into collecting Sailor Moon international dolls back in the day, I used to browse for hours looking at their teeny tiny low res scans of the dolls in their boxes and dream about having more characters and the gorgeous metallic outfits. I fell in love with the Italian dolls and now years later I collect them too.

While the recession definitely might have played into it (actually this has me wondering if this is why a lot of the dolls for R and S were manufactured in Korea instead of China- a lot of those dolls are notorious for having some of the worst quality issues such as translucent faces and heavily tarnished accessories- R Chibiusa, NQS, Wedding Usagi and the SukiSuki dolls for example were all Korean factory), the hollow limbs are kind of a design mainstay for asian playline dolls, going all the way back to the original Gen 1 Licca-chan in the 70's and still continuing to this day! It's less a budget thing and moreso a design standard across the board for playline dolls in East Asia, a pretty interesting example of divergent evolution between Western and Asian doll design standards. If I have to guess, this likely resulted from the ubiquity of sofubi toys (hollow soft vinyl toys that became popular starting in the 50's) in Japan which are constructed in a very similar way, and also likely because of a preference for simplistic vintage-style doll construction in Japan that isn't really prevalent in the Western doll industry where we tend to prefer more "advanced" types of construction and articulation for playline. The limbs tend to have wires inside to provide a type of smooth, limited articulation (I know I've heard that some R dolls lack the wiring but none of mine do, and every doll after R certainly does) which is also probably a reason for the hollowness, though modern japanese playline dolls can also have solid rubber limbs with wires instead of hollow.

I grew up with Jennies mostly which have more Barbie-esque limbs (since they were at one point Barbies, makes sense) so I didn't realize it was more common for Japanese dolls to be hollow! That and the Bandai-Asia Sailor Moon dolls have click joint knees as well.

Me and my cousin had SO MUCH Sailor Moon merchandise and quite a few dolls, and you cannot understand the nostalgic feeling I got from this video ❤ it was a blast to play with them, and to be honest, even as a child I could tell they were amazing dolls. My mom had a few of the 90’s sailor moon dolls but sadly they all got thrown away by my grandma. I actually have quite a few of the sailor moon pullips though (Venus, Mercury and Uranus) they are really nice dolls but 1) the costumes are made from pleather and peel over time 2) the tiaras are attached to the hair by two clips at the end of the tiara bands and its IMPOSSIBLE to actually attach. Overall though a few of them are really cheap to buy compared to most pullips.

There are some really great Sailor Moon Pullip dolls. They're a little odd with stylized giant heads and eyes that can move side to side, close, or wink. They also have extremely tiny feet. Definitely an interesting fashion doll if you ever want to fall into that strange rabbit hole.

I've been waiting for this video! I keep looking at the senshi dolls in the background of every video wondering when they'll get their time to shine. I have such a fondness for them, particularly the Irwin pretty face dolls. My favorite Christmas memory was my mom buying every available Sailor Moon fashion doll and presenting them to me in one giant box. I had never seen them in stores and think she got them from connections as a purchaser for retail stores, her job at the time. I remember opening the giant box in the corner of the room and seeing the dark blue packaging holding every one of my treasured Sailor Moon characters. I played with them for years and years and still own and treasure them. They're much worse for age - the dog got to the them, the small pieces were lost to childhood playtime, I had no idea how to care for the hair - but I love them all the same. I would love to purchase them from ebay or something now, but can't quite justify it to myself even though I know it'll get harder every year. I'm so looking forward to seeing yours up close soon!

In Germany we had also the Bandai Doll at first. I also remember the Chibi Figures with Houses and the Castle in the Commercials. But later on we got Dolls from the Company Igel. They where not as bad as Irwin but not as cute as Bandai Dolls. The Outfits where way to baggy aswell. I still have Sailor Mercury frm that Line. Igel had also Tuxedo Mask and Queen Berryl as Dolls and a Chibi Moon Dolll with a Plush Body. But no Outer Senjis.

Italian here, and I agree, those dolls from the 90s were adorable! I kept Sailor Moon for myself, but selling the others atm. They didn't make the Outers in Italy because Giochi Preziosi imported the license from Bandai Europe, so they produced those exact dolls under Giochi Preziosi's name. Aside from this, great video! I hadn't seen the Italian dolls before. They are so damn cute! Back in the 90's a friend of mine collected all of the OG "ugly" Irwin dolls. I just couldn't get into them though. They looked so off. I just loved the American assumption that boys would have a more fun time if the dolls were hideous. I can't even begin to assess what's wrong with that thought process...

Oh my god this video brought back so many memories! ❤When I was little, I had a friend whose father travelled around Europe for his job a lot and he brought my friend a full collection of the Italian Sailor Moon dolls and they were sooo pretty. She once gave them to me for a few days and shortly afterwards we had a falling out and now years later, when I sifted through all my old doll stuff, I actually found Makoto/Sailor Jupiter's shoes and gloves... It's a shame that I don't have the rest of the doll but even more so, that her doll is now incomplete (if she even kept them idk)

Excellent Pose Sailor Moon did have bendy wire arms and - if I remember correctly - snap-bend knees (and her hips could rotate a lot!) :) Also, worth noting: Irwin had their own molds for the Sailor Moon dolls! Some of them are rereleases of the Bandai America dolls, but they had their own line of "ugly face" or "froggy face" dolls in the mid to late 90s... sometimes you can find a "prototype" with slightly different facial screening (it's a bit, sweeter looking, I guess?), but the original 11" dolls have different facial and body molds, as well as different screening. /Some/ of the 6" dolls are again, identical, but some of them are also unique to Irwin. The earliest "baby face" Irwin dolls from the early 2000s also have a slightly modified body of the old 90s Irwin dolls, with the neck joint modified for the new head sculpt. In the two-pack with Chibimoon, some Serena dolls have the crescent moon... others don't. All Serenas have her yellow moon earrings - Serenity's are a metallic gold color.

first of all, finding your channel has been a gem for me!! I have always loved dolls and all knowing everything I can about my favorite lines or franchises. I also just finished rewatching sailor moon! it was striking how you mentioned giochi preziosi releasing sailor moon toys that were available in japan but not the US, including outfits that were never shown in the series itself. I collect a few toys here and there (from shows/franchises I really love) and recently discovered several hamtaro playsets that were only released in japan! They did have a few in the US, but it was just a fraction of what was made for the franchise as a whole since the show didn't do as well in the US. The ones released within japan & north america were manufactured by epoch (the same company that does calico critters/sylvanian families). However in Italy, giochi preziosi manufactured these playsets/figures and also had these odd one off playsets that were never seen in the animation. I wonder if giochi preziosi gets creative liberty to branch out for these designs? it was interesting how italy had way more releases than the US for japanese toys, which makes me wonder if anime/manga and japan as a whole was more influential or had more demand. the new release of the sailor moon dolls look so cute!! I'd love to see you share a video on them once they're in your possession. I had a few pullips myself (which are stashed someplace at my parents house) and watching your videos makes me want to find them and display them with the rest of my toy collection! this video kept me company while I was getting a bit of work done, thank you!

I was old enough in the 90’s to buy my own toys. I bought the ugly face 12” Moon doll, and the 6” Serenity, Jupiter & Venus. Foolishly I did not buy any of the wands, compacts or star locket. 😢 And I was really into collecting Pullips in 2007-2009, and always thought a Sailor Moon Pullip would be amazing! They were released after I sold a lot of my collection, but I did buy Sailor Moon. Thanks for this video! ❤

I've been a fan since I was little, and I own 2 dolls. A Sailor Moon my grandma bought me pretty early in the u.s. debut. She asked me if I wanted the wand, tuxedo mask, or sailor moon. I picked Sailor Moon. The second is the Sailor Pluto with the silver outfit I found randomly at a goodwill, sadly her hair was damaged and needed to be cut, but still an amazing find. ( goodwill is amazing for fun finds, once we found most of the vhs's of Sailor Moon there, my mom was nice and bought them all for me, another time I found the Book from Cardcaptors there with all the cards included)

What a fun video! I recently resumed my full watch-through of Sailor Moon and have been diving into Sailor Moon youtube content as a result. Looks like I had the Irwin dolls as a kid! (Still have them safely tucked away :) I watched this video eagerly hoping to see the dolls I have and really enjoyed the moment when the ones I recognized finally came on the screen. To my memory, I have Sailors Moon, Mars, Venus, and Mercury in the small version, as well as a larger version of Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon, which I believe are the ones you pointed out that are on view in the bottom right corner of this video. And lastly, I'm pretty darn sure I have the larger version of Jupiter, since she's the one I for some reason couldn't get in the small version! Thanks for this video and can't wait to watch more!

I had a few of the 6” Irwin “ugly face” dolls when I was a kid. I always thought they were the Bandai ones, but they must be the early irwin ones because of the different shoes. Anyway, I actually love these dolls and I still have them. I didn’t watch sailor moon until I was older, so for a long time they were my only touchpoint for the series. I’ve recently been trying to build up my collection to include the outer senshi and characters like chibi usa and tuxedo mask. The eBay prices actually aren’t terrible for the early 6” dolls for most characters, probably because they’re not as popular lol. The exception is the outer senshi, they’re nearly impossible to find reasonably priced, but I’m trying!

I have all the original 6 inch bandai dolls released in the US plus the pretty face Sailor Moon as well. I also have the pretty face bigger Chibi Moon, Neptune and Uranus. I also used to have Serentity, Pluto and Wicked Lady but I sold them when I was really sick and couldn't work. 😭😭 I bought them all when they came out and it was really rare to see any of these where I live. They were my first dolls that I bought just to collect, I had them for so long that I kinda forgot I even had a doll collection until recently. 😅 Now I have many more but not of Sailor Moon franchise. They're just too unaffordable now.

I had a few of the "pretty face" Irwin Sailor Moon dolls when I was younger. I believe I had Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Jupiter, and the two pack with Chibi/Mini Moon and Serena. I was not kind to these dolls at all and I remembered drawing on Sailor Moon's face and cutting off all her hair despite the fact that I loved them so much. Their legs would pop off frequently and I kept them naked all the time. As an adult and customizer/collector, I want to hope that someone got ahold of these dolls and fixed them up and they're now lovingly displayed on a shelf somewhere, but it's more likely they're just in a landfill somewhere.

I didn't realize Irwin Toys was a Canadian company. I am Canadian, and I recall hearing the name a lot when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s. According to Wikipedia, Irwin went bankrupt in the early 2000s due to increased competition and trade law changes (they had made money distributing big US companies' toys in Canada).

I never got rid of my frog-face/ugly 12" Sailor Venus and Sailor Jupiter dolls from my childhood, and somehow managed to keep their hair somewhat intact after all these years. Another strange fact about the 12" deluxe adventure dolls is that even after they corrected the shoes, ALL of the inner senshi/scouts came with a tiny Crescent Moon wand they could hold.

I grew up with Sailor Moon and the Swedish dub. As a European, I am pretty sure the dolls that were sold here was the Italian releases. I remember the character cards and the stands were clear with two holes for the feet. Getting the dolls are one of my core memories. Mum took us to this toy shop that seemed to have a lot of consignment stuff and they had Sailor Moon dolls. I wanted Moon, but they didn't have her, so I got Venus and my brother got Mercury. They are now both on display in my figure cabinet with the rest of my Sailor Moon collection. ♡

Thank you for this amazing video! Alot of these dolls I've never seen before, so it was fun to learn about them. Me and my sister had the pretty face Irwin dolls of Sailor Moon and the Inner Scouts. I grew up with the first wave of the Giochi Preziosi dolls, they were absolutely adorable and very accurate from what I can remember! I had the 5 inner senshi, Queen Serenity, a small-scale Chibiusa and a Pluto doll? So I think it's possible that outer senshi dolls existed. It's possible that it only applied to Pluto because she appeared earlier in the series compared to the rest if I remember correctly. As a huge Sailor Moon (and doll) fan, I thoughoutly enjoyed this video! Thanks for making it!

I am italian and i sadly was too young for the first line of giochi preziosi Dolls but in 2011 they also released a line of mini Dolls,they had molded on tops and gloves but fabric skirts and hair, i still have the Sailor moon One and her hair is in real buns! It's incredibile for the scale, she's like 5 inches tall. I recenty had to change the elastics because they had rotten off. In Italy magical girls Dolls in general have Always been really good and they are usually giochi preziosi or GIG, GIG Dolls usually have incredibly good outfits but kinda ugly baby faces in my opinion. kinda sad i was too poor as a child for a lot of them in the 2000s.

Perfect informative vid. ✨️❕️🪽 Long time Sailor Moon Loves. All the Sailor Moon characters are Japanese and love the school uniform hero costumes. Sailor V was supposed to be the main character, we love her, but Sailor Moon is amazing. Sailor pluto Definitely has a darker skin tone. It could be symbolic for pluto "energy" in general. Again all of the characters are Japanese. Even sailor moons hair is just yellow to grab attention when she was first created!

I love Sailor Moon any videos that talk about her are my fav videos to watch on youtube. I don't have alot of Sailor Moon dolls, I do have 12' Princess Serena, 12" Tuxedo Mask, both 6"Moon and Mask but I don't know were the 6" doll are. In the 2010s I was able to get second hand 6"Princess Serena, both Italian Super Sailor Moon and Chibi Moon, ugly face 12" Moon and Mars, and the new both 30th anniversary Princess Serenity and Super Sailor Moon.

Loved this video, I discovered Sailor Moon when I was in primary school (elementary school in the US) and fell in love with the fact it was a show with a female hero roster (Mercury & Jupiter were aways my favourites) I have the Irving Toys pretty face Inner Scouts, a 17" Jupiter and a miniature Mars that came with a VHS of the series that I got from a shop called Woolworths (R.I.P Woolworths in the UK). I also have chibi plushes of Mercury and Jupiter I got in a Toys-R-Us (another shop that needs an R.I.P)

Wao finally a video we needed long time ago. I love collecting Sailor Moon dolls. I only want to make a point. You showed some dolls in boxes that have a bow with a heart and a logo sticker as giochi preziosi brand dolls but they are Bandai Europe dolls. The Bandai Europe and Asia are like a mix between Giochi and Japanese Bandai dolls. Those dolls were sold by Bandai y México and all latam. Also you forgot to talk about the 17" inches dolls and the Igel germán dolls, anyways thank you so much. I cant wait for more Sailor Moon dolls related videos. 😅😊

I didn't see sailor moon until I was an adult, but I remember the doll commercials running on cartoon network at my grandma's house (we didn't get anything beyond pretty basic cable until I was a teen). They always mystified me, I loved shows like the powerpuff girls and I was really into the idea of cute superhero girls. One anime phase in teenhood and 4 years of college, and it finally became feasible for me to watch. I'm so glad I did! I recently got that new serenity doll (that I absolutely forgot I pre-ordered 😂). I also have an ugly-face sailor venus and chibiusa, and a pretty face usagi. I also have a Rei that I rerooted, I always wondered why she had no hair--I bet she was one of those disintegrating ones you mentioned.

I had two as a kid--the early adventure dolls ( with correct footwear) for Mars and Sailor Moon. I remember specifically raging at 6 years old as I pulled every doll off the hook looking for Mars in heels because I wouldn't settle for an inaccurate doll! Now I do have the Princess Serenity Pulp, which I love

I loved this video. I have the newest Sailor Moon Eternal Doll from Bandai and wanted to get the Inner Senshi that released as well for my Sailor Moon/Doll collection but personally I feel they are too expensive for how small they are and the quality of them (lack of articulation). My dream is to have MGA (or Mattel, but I am hesitant for them) to acquire the Sailor Moon license and revive the Sailor Moon dolls here in the states and hopefully they are standard doll size and have articulation! I think MGA would strike gold and execute the actual dolls well and it would make Sailor Moon dolls a little more better quality and more accessible tbh.

I remember fining them at KB Toys and Toys R Us when they were going out of business and liquidating! My sister and I had so many Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura dolls! :.) I'm so hoping with the re-releases of the anime that more will be made! PS: I cry when I look up Saturn on eBay. I HAD HER. I paid $70 as a teenager. I played and loved her. She's now like $900+ lol

When I was in college in the late 90s, I worked for a summer at Mott's 5 and Dime. We had all the Bandai dolls for a decent price, but I was a poor and I didn't really collect dolls then. My mother bought them all because she liked Sailor Moon as well. Years later she decided to get rid of them and refused to let me have/buy them. I am still a little bitter about it.
