Switching back to a single monitor after getting used to having three (or more) can be a pain. Xebec's Tri-Screen 2 portable monitor setup is here with a unique way to try to solve the problem, but does Adam think this solves the issue or does it introduce a whole new set of pain points into your workflow?

My best guess is that this is still like their first gen product. The elastic band won't last a long time as sooner or later, the elasticity is gonna degrade over time. And the kickstand seems to be a prototype that went through and no one thought that maybe if we replace it with something thicker or metal, it would support the weight. That or someone really like the Switch V1 and thought it was a "good" idea

current portable monitors are already pretty cheap and there's plenty of options available. Much more versatile, you can move the monitor itself around your table like vertically or at nearly any angle independent from the laptop. They will be stand alone monitors for anything else like for a console. Better quality in general, metal casings, solid stands, larger sizes.

9:53 i think they would have to field A LOT of calls from people leaving the cables plugged into outside ports, thrrowing it it a bag, having that bag impact something, and then completely seperating the port from the board or breaking the connector off inside the port, if the teardown procedure was not designed to make you unplug the cables, its a happy accident, because i for sure would design my product to do the same thing if there was not room to completely recess the port framework style

I have these 2 displays I bought off of Craigslist. They connect via magnets to the back and easily slide out like this does. Except they are both 13.3" they have USB C on each side and have patch through so I can use a single USB C cable for both screens. They are super light and even with my laptop tilted a lot it didn't flip it over. And just pull them off of the screen. The only down side is you have to attach x2 little metal pads for the magnets to hook to. But they are awesome. I've had them for about 3 years now.

I do programming work from coffeeshops and have the mobile pixel duo and it has some fit/finish and UX issues, but all in all I'm really happy with it! A triple monitor set up could be cool but it feels like at that point the extra screen real estate isn't worth the added inconvenience. I would hate a generic portable monitor because every step to using a screen on a separate kickstand is just a bit more inconvenient to the point where it'd be really distracting: shifting your laptop to avoid glare or get a more comfortable seating position, changing tables, packing and unpacking, fitting everything into a narrow or uneven table etc.

I'm a designer, and before covid I was freelancing (so diferent office each month, use your own machine etc etc). So this is RIGHT up my wheelhouse. I used a 15/16in MBP with a 15.6in portable USB-C monitor, and then Duet app with my phone and a magnetic phone holder for an additional mini-monitor (great for monitoring teams/outlook/KZbin etc). It was WAYYY less bulk, much thinner/lighter, much nicer looking and only cost about £160/180 in 2018ish. The Duet app was about £15 at the time if I remember, but I think it's a yearly subscription now.

Personally I use the mobile pixel duo (also have a trio version available) and I’ve got to say I love it and wish it was reviewed instead. Not only does it attach to the back via super strong magnets but it also comes with a stand so you don’t have to attach it to the back of your laptop and use it as a portable monitor on the side. They slide in perfectly and the cables are plugged in from the side so easy to pack away without unplugging. Doesn’t consume battery that much either. It’s also cheaper. The trio I believe is $500 and is 12.5 inches whilst a 14.1 inch variant is available for $599
@emma70707
@emma70707 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, no clue why they bothered reviewing these other ones. Mobile Pixels is what I had too (before work from home and selling it) and it's definitely the better option. The only downside is that when you're not using it you're left with the magnets on your screen. I wouldn't recommend these dual screen options, still, because it's just a lot of extra weight on the hinge--one extra is the max I'd recommend people get.

I really love the idea of this sort of design, and I think it has some merit in terms of ease of portability and usability if perfected. The biggest issue I see is the fact that laptop hinges aren't designed for this extra weight, however. The quality of the assisting stand and the weight of the unit is very central to the usability of it all.

I got a 15.6" 1080P portable monitor from ViewSonic, a reputable brand, for $150 US to use with my EGPU. It has USB-C and supports daisy chaining so multiple screens only require one port on the laptop. It also has a mini HDMI port which is important for me because the EGPU doesn't have USB-C out. It even comes with a carrying case. I could get THREE of them for less than the price of the two, much smaller screens on this contraption. The only thing I can think of that this does better is if you don't have the space for a free-standing monitor, but that's a lot of money to fork over for a fairly niche use case.

None of these products can compete with the laptop arm I had installed next to my bed, who needs 2 mini monitors when you can use your primary display while laying down or rotated 90 degrees on your side?! Legit this display arm with a laptop vesa plate is the most secure monitor set-up I've ever used and considering I'm able to use my laptop in any position I want its added way more value than any second screen could add. I'm planning on mounting a couple different laptop arms in my sprinter van conversion. With a 17" laptop you've got a large enough display to watch movies/shows and with the rotation/angles achievable on an arm you can watch sitting up, laying down & snuggled up without losing any viewing angles at all. Why get more monitors when you can make the most out of the ones you've already got?!

I would love to see this product category evolve, but we are not quite there yet. We are also not quite there in terms of laptop hinge strength and display thinness. There are also versions that just add one screen to your laptop instead of two, and those might have fewer ergonomic compromises. I'd love to see laptops with 20" 4K screens that are still thin and relatively light. I know some regulations would have to change to allow them on airplanes, but having one large laptop screen you can divide into quadrants is infinitely more practical than this. I miss aspects of the 17" Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro I used for work back in 2007-08. The 17" LG Gram is a great replacement for it, but I would want to go even bigger in terms of screen size.

The best solution would be for it to have a *single* USB-C connector at the bottom of the frame with internal connections in the frame to the screens, and another power input only USB-C just beside it to provide pass-through power to the laptop. They could then include either two USB-C and two USB-C cables with right and left 90-degree "twist" respectively to make them flat on the side of the laptop, or USB-A and USB-C cables with "180-degree foldable" connector, not sure if these exist for USB-C though (they do for HDMI and USB-A). And a second kick-stand, there's no possible excuse there. Doing it that way would be significantly more complex to engineer and the BOM would be higher, but the result would be an actual second generation product, this is more like generation 1.1... Or even 1.0, just not as overly cost-optimized as the other.

I had literally the exact same experience as this with this brand. It is a little too early I think. It needs to be lighter and easier to operate, power and display. I would expect wireless display tech to help with the cabling and some way to simplify the power and reduce port consumption. I still like the idea because in theory you can just dump it in a single bag whereas an additional screen might need its own carry case etc. But overall, not a workable solution for me.

It's always going to be a niche, but with some work on the engineering it could move from 'only the desperate' to something genuinely usable, but I am not sure it's worth the effort. If it had a metal chassis (that plastic doesn't make me think it will last) with smoother rails to push the screens in, if it had a full kickstand the whole middle width to support it, if it had the cabling to the monitors build into the middle frame so all the connections go into that (and didn't have to be removed if you were just folding it up), and especially if it had a better holding mechanism to the laptop that didn't put as much pressure against the screen. I think I'd even prefer if the middle just stood behind the laptop and the outer screens could be moved forward. That's a whole lot of engineering and extra cost though, so ultimately I don't think it will take off and I'd just go with a portable screen or a tablet that I could actually use away from the laptop.

For a work laptop I wish they could design it with simple 15" 1080P IPS screens (or 7.5" tall portrait screens). Use an aluminum chassis with nylatron pads for the sliding surfaces... like a drawer. The kickstand would also need to be metal to fix the flex issues, but seriously you should be at the lounge or a desk so the screen isn't tilted so far back.

put this on the MSI titan G77 the LTT did a few weeks ago and make the ultimate laptop. plugging in one of the usbc cables into a power bank and one into the laptop.

I think it makes sense but the screens need to be bigger, 12/14 inches. They don't need to be crazy high res but the size matters a ton. And they need 2 solid kickstands not one weak one. As you pointed out someone might want to use the touch screen. I think it has potential, esp, with a better kickstand larger screen and better connector (one cable you don't have to remove when storing).

I just use opensource 'SpaceDesk' from my phone (if I dont need a big screen) or a tablet for secondary screens when out. Its free software, just need your phone/tablet and wifi.

It looks like the frame needs to be a lot better quality than what it currently is. If they can sort that out and keep a similar price, then yeah I can see it being useful for some people

I've got an entirely separate portable monitor with an aluminum stick for a kickstand. It's perfectly fine, and while it isn't an "HDR" screen with high refresh rates or anything, it does its job and isn't obnoxious to use. I've no reason to invest in this device, even though two screens would be cool. Do I think they should keep at it? Yes. It's not great yet, but I can envision a version which won't be excessively small and won't be janky AF. Something with extending metal rails, a metal kickstand, probably a built in battery, and wiring that plugs into the bottom of the frame to connect to the screens anywhere along the track so you don't have to unplug things to fold it up, that will still be only $500ish.

I've used sidecar with an iPad to the side of my Macbook and that worked quite well. A portable monitor 12-15 inch monitor with a kickstand just looks like a far better solution than two 10-inch things that look so awkward to use I wouldn't even bother trying.

It would be cool if the rear of these screens were covered with a solar panel that could charge a laptop at the same time.

This form factor is really good, but i want it for a THICC Gaming/producitvity laptop (The sort of "Portable PC" type) The fact that it attaches to the laptop itself is wierdly Important to me... i also really like the way they bend in like Shutters!

its dream worth chasing but not there yet, for me bit bulkier design for better support and cable management will be great, just 1 remove able cable with recessed slot like framework to protect the port so when I want to go I'll just pull 1 plugged on the laptop, fold, store in bag an go

This should continue to evolve, nothing wrong with having a form factor like this vs a separate stand alone, but the execution lacks polish, assumed longevity, and is in essence, currently clumsy or combersome. Good review highlighting the plus and minus of.

@@KingLarbear naw I don't mean a folding screen. I mean like imagine this product but fixed to the lid, back of the screen. Maybe it's a bad idea because it couldn't switch to other laptops. A manufacturer could make a product like this for their own laptops with a screw hole or something. Idk. Just brainstorming.

Most people I know that do mobile office work (oilpatch) use 16-17" monitors on their laptops, that or take compact 10-14" laptops and bring ultra wide monitors with them. This is great in concept, but given the build's downsides I couldn't see myself getting one. As a 17" laptop user myself, would expect the extra two monitors to be 16-17" as well, the brightness/refresh rate is really low (at least 300-500nits/120-144hz) and I'm not impressed with the use of the plastics, fabric stretch band for retention or the flimsy kick stand leg. At this point, sometimes I miss the days of just buying a 35" Origin All-in-One system for work and just taking that. Laptops have come a long way, but for those of us working in mobile offices, sometimes AIO's were just better.
