the Giving is in the moment you give it. It's a gift...what if the other never gives gifts to you? Is there no such thing as imbalanced relationships where one gives constantly and the other is a constant taker? Is there never wrong caused by others? If you always turn it around...you're always to blame?
@BrianCormackCarr5 жыл бұрын
That's how it can appear and feel when we go straight to the turnarounds without doing the inquiry of the four questions first. The inquiry helps us to see that some of what we've been believing - about ourselves, about the other - doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Then we can "own" the turnarounds. And it doesn't mean that we wouldn't leave an abusive or imbalanced relationship. It's just that we'd be in a position of greater clarity when we do, and aware of all our options.

Wow, yes! I hear what you’re saying. She seems to have integrated both ends of the spectrum so flawlessly-and that’s the power of the Work! Without our beliefs holding us back, the Divine Union just happens! Usually, you only do the turnaround one degree away from the original statement. So if you judge another person as beautiful, you turn it around to “I am beautiful”. Turning it around to “I am ugly” would be two degrees away from the original statement, which Is usually not the point. However, if you go two degrees, you could also say that “I am ugly WHEN I see myself as anything other than this timeless and ageless beauty that I see in her”.

These are my honest thoughts and no insult to you, Brian. I just don't gel with her. I did give her a chance though. Gosh. Some of the things she says make sense but others don't. I just can't wrap my mind around it. This example comes very close to home for me as my husband left me for a woman in Australia. The way she thinks is almost like she has no boundaries and anything goes. She insults him one minute and builds him up the next. I'm not that convinced she helped him deal with his grief. Maybe a bit. It's true though - only good has come of it. What a marvelous man though! He shouldn't take her back. The non-attachment idea is weird, almost like a cult. We live on this earth. Things happen. We're supposed to have joy and sorrow. It grows us. I'd love to know how this idea works in conjunction with a magic practice where you're intentionally changing your life and not just accepting it.
@BrianCormackCarr5 жыл бұрын
No insult taken! :) The Work isn't necessarily for every situation, and certainly isn't for everyone - there are lots of wonderful paths and tools for us to choose from, thank goodness. I completely understand where you're coming from - I've had those thoughts too! All I would say is that her question "is it true" can brought to any assumption we have about how anything works, including The Work! I've found that anytime I've formed a firm idea of "she must mean this or that", "is it true?" brings me back to a state of presence and wide-open options. I don't experience her as insulting him or building HIM up; more that she's pointing out when he's attached to a thought or belief that's making him unhappy. What I love about The Work is that it can inquire into any stressful thought, so it sometimes seems a bit contradictory. It can be used to inquire into a thought we're attached to that's leading to suffering; but the thought that's making us suffer might be something like "I shouldn't be suffering", which would lead to an inquiry into "you're not supposed to suffer - is it true?" The part of The Work that is sometimes a bit downplayed is its that it comes from a position of pretty radical nonduality. In other words, what's happening is supposed to be what's happening, simply because it's happening. Any opinion as to whether it's good, bad, or indifferent is going to move us from the reality of the situation. The Work/Magic question is an interesting one, because it brings up the question as to whether we're actually changing anything, or are we "being changed" as life unfolds...?

@@BrianCormackCarr Thank you for your detailed answer, Brian. I think you explain it better than her, lol. Good food for thought. It's similar to the Buddhist ideas. I studied Buddhism after I left Christianity and enjoyed a lot of the ideas but paganism felt more right for me at this time in my existence. My favourite Buddhist reading material was The Dalai Lama's Cat book series. A marvelous read for cat lovers.
