Finally, after a 2 year wait, the World Championship of Shoe Shining returns to London. The competition, as in previous years, gives 3 competitors from around the world, just 20 minutes to shine a shoe to the highest possible gloss. The event is part of this year's Super Trunk Show, held annually in London.

What a random coincidence you saying that and me reading this. These will literally be the fields they harvest the sprouts for the festival most likely.

It's amazing what those guys can pull off in such a short time. I have the Safir products, I've practiced on my daily wear shoes, but on my new AE's I just can't come close to this. Not at all. I have a "shiny" surface but not close to mirror. I'm definitely going to try again tonight. Congrats to them.

Different leathers shine differently. Just a view tips that you can use as a beginner, maybe it helps. Especially with new shoes. 1. Make sure you apply enough wax, that the pores of the leather get filled with wax. Give the wax a bit of time to dry between applications. Make sure the wax is hard before applying the next coat and do not use too much pressure while applying the next layer, because otherwise you might remove more wax than you apply. This is especially important if you use neutral colour waxes. If you use pate de luxe you need to wait significantly longer between applications, with mirror gloss 5 -10 minutes between application should be enough before the wax is dry. For a cap I would use 8-10 layers of wax. You can also brush the shoes with a soft brush like goat hair, to smooth the leather, before applying another coat. I found out that it makes it more easy to achieve a shine later, when you start with a smooth surface. What is also important: Use very little water and make sure you have the right cloth to polish the shoes to a high shine. One or two drops of water for a cap are enough and polish in circular motion until the water is gone, once the water is gone, apply one or two drops again and keep polishing until you like the shine. Take your time while polishing and again not too much pressure. There a more advanced techniques I can explain but hopefully that will give you a good and consistent starting formula. @@KMaybach1 thanks Anton, I did work (only two) more layers into the cap, probably puts the total to ~8. I also ran two on the body, just to bring some minor shine to the rest of the shoe. I'll work on them again this evening just light polishing to see if they improve anymore. Cheers guy.

Web guy, there are lots of (perhaps) unimportant life skills: shoe polishing, knife sharpening, fabric repair, circuit soldering, electronics repair, watch repair. They are (for me) simply hobbies I like to do watching an evening show before working again. Some educate, some entertain, some have practical value, but they are all fun and expand your base of knowledge. Not a single person has ever said a word to me about my polished shoes (or frankly a watch on my wrist). But, I wear and display things for my enjoyment and whatever subliminal image it may or may not project to the world. Give the polishing a try, you might be surprised.

Ash's suit is amazing I wonder what brand that is. I have a feeling it could be ring jacket. I think as more people compete in the world championship they should change the way they judges are picked. I believe it should be judged by pervious winners and it should be a reward that can only be earned once. That would better promote the championship and give some respect to winners.

@@qarhsi I'm not a fan of Kirby's suit. This style of big lapels is making a come back which can look pretty good on some people. On a little guy like Kirby big lapels and pant cuffs paired with a slim cut makes you look extra tiny.

When I used to shine my boots, I used nothing but black polish, cotton balls, water, panty hose, and a brush. Would get a mirror finish. You could cheat, and put polish on, and then use a lighter to melt it on shoe/boot, then shine with a wet cotton ball. But that's cheating lol.

I have these exact shoes, it's interesting to see them so well polished, however I must say, I'm not a fan of how the toecap seems to stand above the welt at front, if that makes any sense, it has a pronounced curve inwards as it goes under, rather than just cutting in. Not as elegant in my opinion!

he is really good, i went to mason smith multiple times and they just knew exactly what makes a shoe shine, many people think its the cloth but its not, its the BASE layers that mattered and how you apply them, the timing during each application makes it such that the layer before must dry off before the next base layer, though how many base layers or how much thickness is still a mystery
