Call it what you want in your own language, but the Brits came up with the word "soccer" so that they wouldn't have to specify "Association Football" as opposed to "Rugby Football." The Americans borrowed that word from them because they were working on their own football rules. The Brits didn't really turn hostile to the word "soccer" until the NFL saw a steep rise in popularity in the 1970s.

Football, you would call it soccer, but calling it so, would harm this argument, is played by kicking a ball with your feet. American Football is played by manipulating a roughly egg shaped body with your feet and hands. So lets call "Soccer" Football and American Football Limbegg.

Football is called "football" because it's played on foot rather than by foot. This was to differentiate it from the equestrian sports such as hunting and racing. The original football, from medieval England, featured the carrying - not kicking - of an inflated animal bladder from one end of a field to another. Thus, American football more closely resembles the original football. Incidentally, American football does occasionally utilize kicking.

It actually is a WORLD Cup, unlike some "World" Series. Some notes: - Each continental confederation (like UEFA for Europe) decides how their assigned slots are filled. - Australia competes in the Asia qualification now. They had basically no competition in Oceania (except somewhat New Zeeland) and to qualify for the World Cup, they had to face strong teams, mostly from South America. After the switch, they qualified every time. - I think it's the "Group of death", not the "Team of death"

I'm a Maldivian studying in Bangladesh. Thisbweek I travelled in to rural villages in Bangladesh as part of my course and I saw villages painted with flags of Argentina and Brazil. When asked they said those were the teams they supported in the last world cup. Just goes to show you how influential the world cup really is.

4:24 Don´t forget: East and West Germany even had to play against each other in the group stage. During the whole division this was the only time ever they had a football match! AND THE EAST WON!!!! It was a huge embarrassment for the West, but it didn´t matter that much because in the end West Germany won the World Cup.

East Germans were not very good but they played much better beck then compared to now. Since reunification eastern team fell so hard. Beck in the days FC Magdeburg won cup winners' cup and FC Carl Zeiss lost a final. Now only one team from the east plays in the Bundesliga and that's a team bought by Red Bull recently.

Not much to explain. 32 American professional teams play a 16 game season, and the top 12 teams go to a knockout stage with the championship game being the Super Bowl. It's called a bowl because American football stadiums originally resembled bowls.

Eh no, because New Zealand would qualify each and everytime beating minnows like Vanuatu and Tonga on their way. Oceania getting half a berth is totally acceptable. Australia got out of the Oceania qualifiers a few years ago because of the lack of competition and now play in the Asian qualifiers. Oceania is too small and they like and play rugby better.

The metric system is superior for measuring distances, and most measuring tapes sold in the US include metric on one side. It's okay for measuring weights and liquid volumes, and some beverages in the US are sold in liters, but generally only engineers and scientists benefit from the simpler math of metric weight and volume measurements. Finally, there's no benefit to switching to celsius because Americans already know the important fahrenheit reference points and there's no complicated math to do with units of temperature. Fahrenheit is actually the more precise measurement in terms of whole number degrees.

England playing as England isn't about politics. The countries in the UK all have our own teams when we play against each other and with worldwide teams as well. Why is this? Well England was the home of modern football and rules that dictate the game were created here. The first game of national football was between England and Scotland in 1872 and resulted in a draw. As such, we still play this way to this day because of our deep history with the game.

Another interesting geographical side note is that a few years ago Australia were moved to the Asia qualifying section. I'm pretty sure this was because they were just so much better than everyone else that it wasn't even competitive. I mean New Zealand are alright but every other Oceania nation is tiny and they generally prefer rugby anyways over there. That makes Oceania getting 0.5 teams seem a but fairer.

The main reason for Australia "moving" to Asia was the direct WC spot from Asian qualifiers. When Australia was in the Oceanic qualifiers, they needed to win a match against the 5th place in South America to qualify, a much harder task imo.

Robert, if the opposing team passes the ball to him, he's not offside. The ball counts too, if the ball moves beyond those opposing defenders, the ball will act as the offside line. It sounds confusing when put into text, but it's very easy to understand practically.
