This is spot on; local leaders, not outsiders, MUST be the main directors of development in their communities.

This is an important and bold argument from an authority in international development. It's a blueprint for making the world a better place through local non-profit projects by applying rigorous investment metrics that value and sustain local innovation, local success, and the expertise of local leadership. Really compelling and inspiring examples of the practical wisdom of this approach.

Anyone who attempts to do any work in another country without thoroughly consulting a dominant in the community is setting your self up for failure. That is a big problem with American's, thinking that what they have to offer is 'needed' in a community. It's called research and development and with out this every small business will fail as well. So, would say that the world doesn’t need another new small business? Of course not. Therefore what he is saying here is a great idea if you can't get past your ego and humbly ask for help, insight and guidance on a local level. This also includes not being the 'leader' and having to support and praise those who know exactly what said community really needs and run all ideas by them first to see if what you think is necessary actually is...

This is an amazing idea, invest in the local leaders. Giving food aid isn't going to get people far. Investment in their future will also have a ripple effect uplifting others in the region. Being from Africa myself and in business in Europe I understand how charity is perceived and often fails to make a difference. We have corrupt governments and dead economies. Help us by fanning the flames of innovation and we can uplift those starving children by giving their parents Jobs. The investment needed is a fraction of the billions spent sending food or clothes etc for it to all be robbed by politicians

Does it mean new ideas are nothing? if we want to change the world. Go with new ideas, not the old one. It's always possible to fund the existing, but bringing new is always a chance for someone who dreams something new

Katie Krantz - I compartinho with you the same thought . Happy birthday!!! Inverting the traditional model of non profit charities is so powerful! Allowing the autonomy of creating positive change to be placed back into the hands of local leaders will surely lead to long-lasting and effective impacts for developing communities.

Kirk, I couldn't agree with you more. if those working in international development could take a step back and care a little less about who gets the credit, I think 99.999% of the time, we'd find that the solution to whatever problem we want to solve already exists locally. there's so much talk in the development world about "buy in from local stakeholders" and "culturally appropriate programs." your inversion model shows just how backwards that thinking is and how much we still have to learn. thank you for sharing!

Obrigado.

As an example, it's the same concept as OS fragmentation with Linux. You spread out the resources too far, and don't focus the energy towards one resource, keeping it from proliferating as well as it could.

I agree, but how do you come up with funds to support an organization you are not a part of? How do you write for a grant or as for donations when you are not part of that organization or any for that matter? Please let me know I am all ears.
@crstph4 жыл бұрын
it would be near impossible to write a grant for an organization you're not involved with anyway, considering all the information you need about budgeting and goals and their records; your options are either to donate directly, ask your friends/family/contacts for money and donate that directly, or contact the organization and volunteer your services, then ask them what they need you to do. most nonprofits won't turn down free, passionate volunteers, and once you volunteer for that org you can write actually effective grants that might even get funds (or what have you)
