The hanging munchkin was ACTUALLY created to be a hoax. In the original movie, there was a crane in the background. Somebody edited a blurry hanging munchkin into the background on top of the crane. In the Hanging Munchkin video, you can actually still SEE the crane's wing a little bit. And boom, hoax created. Love the video, DiamondBolt!

during YIIK A Post Modern RPG's initial release, the devs teased about a secret ending that no one could ever find, and indeed no one could find because none of the map/dialog data for it is in the game, the only video of it is a fake ARG-type stuff in a dev account where he clearly used debug to max out his stats and film himself beating this ending. Since then they've been teasing an update to YIIK that would expand/polish the story and they hinted that they might put the ending in the game after all

Last year, there was a whole event in the Monster Hunter community where what was long considered a real detail turned out to be a hoax. Or maybe more rumor? idk Long story short, it was thought that the monster Deviljho was capable of eating his own severed tail. Deviljho is known for his gluttony, so this would make perfect sense. Then, all of a sudden, we realized there wasn't actually any footage of him eating his tail. Any footage that claimed he did, there was a piece of meat placed under the tail that he was eating instead. After weeks of people trying to see if they could get legit footage, nothing turned up (except maybe a few more fakes). And just like that, the entire fanbase was left bamboozled.

I think the evolve lickitung into luigi hoax was an interesting one. I mean you mentioned having to turn the game boy upside down during the evolution requirements. I think that they forgot about that hoax by the time Pokemon X and Y came out and Inkay needs you to turn the 3DS upside down when leveling up at a certain point to evolve it to Malamar

I swear i saw this a few times in the early years of the Internet and very early years of Pokemon but i know for a fact i saw a Hoax where someone posted that Lapras evolved into Lugia for Gold and Silver. It has just been so long that i can't remember where i saw it but it was just a simple edit of posting a picture of a Lugia card with a tiny Lapras in the top corner where it shows the Pokemon it evolved from was and i believed it, so much i thought getting Lapras got you as many Lugias as you could get.
