Their lives? no. As much of a bunch of jackasses these people were ... just being a dick to people isn't justification for ruining lives or death threats. But I certainly wouldn't be adverse to the idea of hackers nuking their accounts and just erasing the guild from existence. or an organized griefing of them that lasts so long they all quit because all their doing is watching their dead body all the time.
@ObadiahtheSlim Жыл бұрын
It's a PVP server. What they did to crash the funeral was 100% justified and in spirit of what a PVP server is. Also since it's a PVP server, guilds are 100% justified in enforcing civility. That too is in the spirit of what a PVP server is. You do a dick move like that, then bounties to ruin your game are also justified. Taking anything outside of the game is not justified.
@jamisonosborne Жыл бұрын
@@ObadiahtheSlim So if the trolls had crashed a funeral IRL would that have also been part of the game? If it is ok to crash a funeral in a game, then is it ok to crash a funeral IRL? Why not? What's the difference between the real world and the virtual world? The problem with the "it's just a game, it's not real" way of thinking is that it justifies any virtual activity simply because it is virtual. Undertale made that point perfectly, when Sans berates you for doing something not out of any sense of moral compass, but just because you can. "And because you can, you have to." SAO, for all its faults, also made that point. Just because something is virtual doesn't mean it isn't real. The pain that the parents and friends of the dead player felt was real pain because of the real actions the trolls took in the virtual world. To say nothing of what they did in the real world afterwards. The book "The Cyber Effect" does a great job of pointing out why online actions are real world actions and why "it's just a game" is a very dangerous sentiment. Long story short, if you wouldn't do it IRL then you shouldn't do it online, and if you are able to do something to someone online you are equally able to do it IRL. Since the only real difference between the real world and the virtual world is accountability.

Serenity Now were pretty much screaming basement gremlins, and the shrieking from them after a huge chunk of the server not only decided to go after them for this, but even their own faction actively avoiding assisting them, was so good to see. Red is Dead on a PvP server, but this is the kind of thing where you take a step back and walk away. Somebody died. This was somebody going out and letting people who knew their child say their final goodbyes in the medium where they first met, something they did not have to do. I played on PvP servers from Vanilla to about the middle of Wrath and, for the most part, PvPers showed a lot of respect and restraint. Don't square up to a lowbie unless they step up to you. Don't gank a Hunter while they're taming a rare. Don't kill Quest-Givers unless its a life or death situation, that kind of thing. You're there to fight other players and prove your skill, not be a dribbling shitstain bullying the weak. Serenity Now was the pinnacle of the worst aspects of WoW's PvPer community, and I still get annoyed when people say they were 'justified' because it was a PvP zone. If you walk into a smoking area and I walk up and purposefully blow a lungful of cigar smoke into your face, you deserved it because you walked into a smoking area?

One of my favorite stories about World of Warcraft is that when they introduced WoW:Classic (game servers where you would play on the vanilla version of the game) it was sold and heralded by many as a return to form and the olden days when the game was good and made to be played carefree with your friends. And yet, somehow, the players themselves turned Classic into just as miserable a grind as the retail version, to the point where Blizzard had to add a new item to the 15 years old version of its game to alleviate some of the worst issues. Because the past is dead and can never be resurrected. The game was the same as back then, but the players... the players had changed.

I stopped playing before they actually added Classic, but before that whenever someone asked for early mode servers, I argued that early WoW wasn't actually hard, only that nobody really knew what they were doing and nostalgia was kicking in. This reminds me of a city raid I did with a group of friends. It was probably the best time I've ever had in-game. We originally planned on just raiding stormwind. We were so outnumbered that it wasn't funny. So, the leader had a brilliant idea. And I mean, it was the best thing I think anyone has ever thought of. See, he had the idea to make a SECOND group and raid the Exodar. So as we ran back to our corpses to do the rez of shame, he was in a voice chat laying out his ingenious plan. We ran back to our mangled bodies and logged out. We regrouped in Orgrimmar to make the second raid and made our way to the Exodar. To say we were excited would be an understatement. We travel through the countryside and get to Darkshore. We get on the boat, try not to sound the alarm. It was kind of hard since we had to go to Darnassus at the time. Once we got there, the leader sent went back to see if there were people still camping our bodies. Luckily, the keep was still full of players doing unnatural things to our corpses. At that point, a rogue he had sent into the Exodar reported back that it was void of players. So it was decided we would take the Exodar first. And it was glorious! Velen was around 50% by the time we started getting hit with the players. There was nothing they could do. It was either stay in Stormwind or protect the Prophet. Well, 75 to 80% of them decided to come to the Exodar. We had them right where we wanted them! We waited for them all to get to us and made sure all of them were down for the count. We hearthed, then logged into our characters in Stormind. The only players left were lower levels who thought they could take us down. Boy, were they wrong. And again, in another glorious attack, we took down King Varian Wrynn. Players scrambled to make it back to Stormwind in attempts to save the King, but to no avail, he died by the hands of the mighty horde. That day, the alliance understood just how magnificent and powerful the horde really was. Everyone involved had so much fun that night. It lasted way longer than we expected, and some of us had to work super early the next day, but not one person regretted it. I would like to say that if you were one of the people who partook in that battle, thank you for one of the best days in-game. And a big thanks and shout out to Jaegermeister (Sam), you were the best leader ever! ❤❤

I don't like victim blaming but if a bank openly decided to have no security you can't blame bank robbers for thinking it's an easy mark. Can you imagine it elsewhere? Jumping into any sort of PVP based lobby and trying to tell the other team not to do any fighting? Again, I don't support the outcome, but I can't say I'm surprised. At all.

Yeah the dress code thing was a nice idea, but was extremely foolish without transmog being a thing. They should have all showed up battle ready.

I played WoW pretty much from the start of the game. I never played PvP servers but everyone heard about this story. Being reminded of it now almost, aaaaalmost, makes me want to pick up the game again. But i've been clean since cataclysm and i'm not dipping back into that now.

Fayejin has been immortalized by the funeral crashing event thanks to Serenity NOW. She loved Fishing, Snow... And PvP.

The fact it was an alliance guild made this story all the more hilarious. One of the best moments in WoW history

I remember when the first happened people were like "I bet it's serenity now", being some of the more infamous local trolls in those parts.

Every 2-3 years we are subjected to a new video about this funeral or how scientists studied a blood plague of hakkar. Pepper in a spoopy karazhan crypt story and you've got yourself a new old new wow video. Rinse repeat

"Don't hold a funeral in an active warzone, I guess" Exactly. I was an active player back then and of course heard about this. You're asking for trouble doing something like this on a PvP server in a contested zone, simple as.

Some say Frost's hat continues to grow to this day, greater than man or beast. Will it one day grow too great for the world? Only time will tell...

Oh, THIS story. I read about this in a Cracked article about legendary dick moves in video games. Props to Frost for giving it a Spaghetti Western spin on it. And now I now where "Serenity Now" comes from; I always thought it was a "Firefly" reference. Was that Seth Green, and that other guy from Robot Chicken? Why were they being interviewed?

Even if for different reasons than she expected, her funeral wound up being one of the most remembered moments in WoW history, and that's pretty cool.

I just noticed that the title cards have 4 imps in the room but we only ever see 3 on screen at a time. Where is that 4th imp and what atrocities are they committing under Frost's nose?

I still can't believe this happened. The sheer disrespect of the attackers is mindboggling. I belong to the group who thinks everyone in Serenity Now absolutely had the bounties and harassment coming.

Oh shit I remember this! I was in this guild for a little while, I wasn't part of the raid but I had to leave after the whole thing went down because no-one outside the guild would party with me as long as I was associated
@danielvandeputte7588 Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how the month long kos thing would of worked back in they day considering you could just respawn at any graveyard with a gear durability penalty. The ending is probably so muddled because people either just left the guild after the backlash or just leveled alts until everything cool down. Still a good story.

It was more than just one guild. And there was about 50 to 60 Aliance there. I was one of them. A dwarf hunter named Chofmo. I'm not in this video but the one serenity now put out you can see me and my sidekick Ghost (white tiger) during the slaughter.

The Wild West is a great metaphor for this time period. Now, it's evolved, just like real life, into microtransactions and compartmentalized achievement. Achievements ruined Wow, not in and of themselves but, because they helped people accept categorize fun into controlled experiences where they can gouge you every step of the way. OldWow was a place of conviction, not just transaction.
