I've played world of tanks. I can't imagine this being very fun with limited elevation differences, and fewer ways to hide/snipe. Could a warships player explain why this is fun? Legitimately interested. Just don't know if it's worth my time.

It’s free to play but it takes a lot of time to get far without buying ships, it goes up to 10 tiers and I’ve been playing free the entire time and have only gotten to tier 8 but it is a really fun game if your a patient type it’s like monster Hunter level grindset but the gameplay is more anticipation and payoff unlike monster Hunter

Wows is less fast paste and focuses more on positioning and aim, time to kill can either be very high or very low. Just give it a try and try to learn it, either you like it or not

WoWs has a much simpler armor modeling; most ships follow a pretty standard scheme of being weak on the flanks (broadsides) which means you can't put out full DPS *and* hide your flanks (turning to get all guns blazing makes you a bigger and weaker target), which serves a similar purpose. There's a much bigger focus on manual dodging (especially in smaller ships) as well; shell flight times are often 5-10 seconds, so turning and/or slowing down can make shots in the air miss, and torpedoes often take a minute or so to reach their max range. Cover is still useful, but it's often about limiting who can shoot at you rather than being completely safe; you use an island to turn a fight into a 1v1 where you can fire at someone, but no one *else* can shoot back at you while you're detected. Some ships (mostly cruisers) can make great use of islands, as they have high shell arcs, letting them fire over islands where enemies can't, which lets them shoot with impunity, and often while remaining undetected. There are also smoke-screens, which act as mobile self-generated 'terrain'; most destroyers, some cruisers, and a very few battleships can generate a smoke screen that reduces visibility through, in, or out of it to about 20% of usual (destoyers, which can usually be seen at ~6km become visible at 2km)... but they work both ways; you won't be able to spot targets *out* of the smoke, so you need someone else to keep enemies spotted so you shoot from safety... and smoke screens are torpedo magnets (they reduce visibility of incoming torpedoes, and you often aren't moving, making you a sitting duck if you don't have a plan or a hydrophone to detect them). Weegee also seems to be a lot more generous with premium time and the like in WoWs, from what I hear from other WoT players.
