To be completely honest, I think Noah has a real shot at breaking the 200m world record. I like Noah, but this won’t be easy. He will need a perfect day, a perfect start, and his legendary close. As for the 100m, I think we can all agree that it will take longer to fall. Lyles would need to start running his first 60 in the 6.3 range if he wants that record. Technically it’s still possible, as we’ve seen many impossible performances before, but he will have to work very hard and consistently to have any chance of achieving it.

I see you know track. People don't know how exhausting running all the prelims in just the 100 alone and to add the 200 as well. His best chances to win gold is definitely the 200, but also Leslie Tobago is looking nice too with breaking the 300m World Record. That 100 is going to be so deep. Kerly, Coleman, Knighton, Tobago. Everybody is coming for him, especially Knighton. Last Olympics, the Jamaican women showed up and stole the show. This year, the spotlight is going to be on the men.

And this is why Bolt's 2008 and 2009 doubles are on a whole different level: he ran full rounds in both events, and then set world records that _still stand._ Think about that: his 2008 9.69 in the 100m would still tie the world record today, and his 19.30 200m is only beaten by Blake's otherwordly 19.26... And then he came back the next year, ran full rounds and took more than _tenth of a second_ out of _BOTH_ records _AGAIN._ If he'd run only one event out of the 100m and 200m in 2009, the record he would have set in whichever event he ran would have been completely untouchable for _another_ generation from now.

As I've said before, Noah is one of those athletes that can "sustain speed"... Basically, "slow down slower." Some athletes have a greater nack for it (ETH & S. Richardson) whilst others have to revamp their entire sprinting process to get it (SAFP). Ok for anyone interested to learn, train using longer distances (200m and 300m) for conditioning. Also, focus, relax and control your breathing.

@@clemenx No I agree. his 9.58 is pretty reflective of his max pace at peak fitness. We were lucky to see it. The 19.19 maybe he could have gone 0.01 or 0.02 faster if he was being pushed more but he didn't noticeably slow and don't forget, people didn't believe he would break 19.20 in the first place. Yes maybe Blake could have gotten close with a better start... maybe, but the reality is Blake at his peak was faster than the fastest we have now.

@@ImBarryScottCSS True. I've never managed to work out how much he cared about the records vs. winning the race. Even his 9.58, it was a comfortable win but that was a FAST field, and he was pushed most of the way. With out that pressure I don't think he could have done it because, and I don't think this is unique to Bolt, I'd say in many ways this is one of those areas in which is he quite relatable to the average person, he needed that pressure to be able to push that hard. I don't think he could have brought that performance just for the record.

The 200m is beatable, the 100m record is invincible for now. I think Tebogo has the biggest chance out of anyone to break the 200m. A 19.50 at his age plus besting Bolt, Michael Johnson, & Wayde Van Niekerk in the 300m shows that he's the real deal. Bolt's 200m is also into a headwind which helps make it more possible to beat, if Bolt had no wind he'd be closer to 19.16 & with a 1.0~2.0 m/s tailwind I think that would equate to a sub 19.10. So while I think his 200m WR is beatable, the new WR when it happens will still be less of a feat than Bolt's WR if we add in the factor of wind (unless they go sub 19.10 with a tailwind or beat his 19.19 with no wind/a headwind). If the 200 falls my guess would be Tebogo as the most likely, then Lyles, then Knighton. For Lyles to open in 10.00 or 10.05 & be able to finish strong I think he'd need to be at worst a low 9.7x 100m runner. Bolt at 9.58 opened at 9.92. So for Lyles to open at the same percent of full speed he'd need to be a 9.66 runner to do a 10.00 opener, a 9.71 runner to do a 10.05 opener. Going from 6.51 to 6.43 implies that Lyles can take 0.08 off his 100m with a better start, so a 9.75 instead of 9.83 which would be HUGE as that would put him ahead of Coleman, Kerley, & Bromell & he'd be the 6th fastest all-time, but even then it's not quite fast enough to beat Bolt's 19.19 even with Lyles great speed endurance. He'd need to be very very close to Tyson Gay/Yohan Blake 100m & combine that with his speed endurance to pull it off. I don't see him making huge improvements like this since he's already at peak age, so for now I'm sticking with Tebogo has the best shot in the years to come. Edit: To make predictions I think Lyles will run a 9.75~9.78 100m this season. I actually don't think he'll beat his 19.31, that race seems like an outlier as Lyles improved his 60m & 100m when focusing on that from 2022 to 2023, however this means less time to focus on 200m, so his best performance dropped from a 19.31 to a 19.47. I think Lyles will get a 19.39 this year & that MAY be the world lead, however I think it's possible Tebogo runs faster than 19.39 so I think Tebogo will have the world lead this year, but it won't be a WR, not yet.
@panashenhavira
@panashenhavira 6 ай бұрын
Exactly what I said in my comment. Data shows that Lyles and his coach haven't exactly been able to find the balance between his speed endurance and his raw speed to be able to challenge the word record at all. @@Yes_I_c4n Yes, for one Bolt ran into a headwind so someone can get lucky & run a worse race than Bolt (say 19.28 equivalent with the same wind Bolt had, but they instead get a 1.5~2.0 m/s tailwind & squeeze out a 19.17 or 19.18). Secondly a 19.26 & a 19.31 have happened, so there are 2 other runs in the last 15 years that were close~closeish. Can't say the same for the 100m, that's unbeatable right now.

@ericfraley
@ericfraley 5 ай бұрын
Kind of like the 4 x 100m record of 36.84 is 9.21 “splits”? If you estimate that the first leg of the relay runs 9.8 (which would be pretty dang good running the curve), that leaves the final 3 legs all running around 9.01 splits. It’s a lot different when you are already running at the start of 100m vs starting out of the blocks. The second half of 200m can’t be compared to the first when the first half is from a stop and the runner is already at top speed at the beginning of the 2nd half. If a runner is capable of running 9.0 for 100m when already at speed, they would only have to run 10.0 for the first 100m of a 200m race to hit 19.0. It’s all about endurance. I personally don’t think it’s too much for current humans. I feel like the 200m record is more beatable than the 100m record. Both will get beaten at some point though.

@@ericfraley Well if best jamaican were running "flying 100m's" at ~9 seconds+. Its hard for someone to run 2nd half of 200m at 9 seconds. Its impossible actually for someone to have THAT much endurance, not humanly possible to maintain ATP for full sprinting for 19seconds. Lets say you run first 100m at 10 seconds flat. Then it's impossible to run 2nd 100m at 9 seconds coz you already tired so it's just not possible. Unless you run 9.8seconds for first 100m and then 9.2 for the second 100m which still sounds insane to run 9.2s after 9.8 for first 100m. I think the limit will be around 19.13-19.16. When Bolt finishes in 19.19 s, Lyles has run 198.757 m (10.3573 m/s x 19.19 s = 198.757 m). Lyles 19.31/Bolt 19.19 = 1.00625. A difference of a little more than six tenths of one percent. Bolt went 8.70 from 50m-150m when he broke the 150m WR. So this means the only thing stopping us from seeing a new WR is endurance, which the 300 would absolutely help with. Can he break it? You should put up a video on Ibzan Felix, who ran a 17 minute 5K last year, but he just came in 1st for The Ten's High School Mile just last week with a 4:58 and 2:00 final 800, ran an impressive 13:56 in the 3 mile in XC, and lead California with a 9:01!

6:25 If I were going for the world record, the final race would not matter as much to me. I would just try to get the record in whatever race is optimal. If that is the first race, then I would go for it there. If I reach peak performance in my second race, then I would go for it there, etc. There are some sprinters who have set a world record in a prelim race. To me personally, a world record is more important than winning a gold. Anyway, if you hit the world record in a prelim, you're gonna win gold anyway. It's just your day. It's like when I go for max reps in pullups. The optimal time for me is right after warmup. If I wait until the end of the workout, I don't perform as well.

WRs get broken while gold medals don’t - so I disagree
@jakemccoy

@@sebbyh9764Setting the WR in the Olympics (or anywhere) is an accomplishment that is forever notated in track history books, and it means you were faster than every runner who ran that race before you. A gold medal just means you were the best in that one final race on that one day.

@@Yes_I_c4n Unfortunately you destroyed your credibility by going overboard. --Yes or no, can you remember if Carl Lewis ever set a world record? (Yes, you definitely remember.) --Yes or no, do you remember who won 100m gold in the 1980 Olympics? (No, you don't remember, and you don't care.)

@@Yes_I_c4n What you are talking about is a failure in the administration of track and field. There should be a special medal/trophy ceremony for the breaking of a world record. It really is a bigger deal than winning the final race for that particular day. After the ceremony is officially sanctioned, then all the simple-minded people can properly recognize the prestige of a world record.

@@Yes_I_c4n Here is a poll question for sprinters: Would you rather break Usain Bolt's 100m WR of 9.58 or win gold in the 2025 World Championships? You have to bet $1,000. Are you saying you would put your money on them wanting gold in the 2025 World Championships instead of breaking 9.58? Are you sure you want to lose $1,000 like that. Come on, put your pride aside and win some money with the correct bet.
