I became aware of Ayn Rand from the Rush album, 2112. This was late 70s, and inside the album in the liner notes stated, "dedicated to the genius of Ayn Rand." I thought to myself, who the hell is Ayn Rand? This was pre-Internet so I went to the library and found a little Novela entitled, "anthem" (because Rush had a song of that title). That one little tiny book that I remember reading in a couple hours put me down a rabbit hole that was literally life-changing. My life and mind completely changed. I went basically from a pot smoking nihilist to an entrepreneurial objectivist within a few months. I cut my hair, I went to school, I got a PhD in economics, and today I consider myself an expert on both her life and her works having read every known word she ever wrote. And most of what's been written about her. People forget that back in the 30s and even 40s, Communism was not a bad word and neither was Fascism. Indeed, Mussolini was time magazine's man of the year for 1928, and the intellectuals of the time believed that Fascism "the third way", neither Capitalism nor communism, was the enlightened path of the future. So it wasn't the Milton Friedman's and the Frederick von Hayeks fighting the battle of individual freedom back then, it was primarily three women. Ayn Rand, Isabel Peterson, and Rose Wilder Lane (of Little House on the Prairie fame). Her major epistemological error was making reason not just supreme, but the only means by which we understand the world around us. It is true that we will never understand the world by how we feel about it, it is also true we will never understand ourselves and others without understanding the how and why of our feelings. Henry Kissinger once said that Nixon's primary problem was he never got hugged as a child, and this could also be stated about Ayn Rand. After the bolsheviks took over, intense poverty followed and it's clear having to put tar on her hair daily to keep the lice away, etc.… shame! made an indelible impact upon her "psycho-epistemology". Like all of us, rand absolutely possessed emotions, and jealousy and resentment was one of them. She certainly was a genius, but she was also very human. I've read Atlas a a good four times, listened to it once, and I've read quotes thousands of times. Every time I read it, I really enjoyed it, and as I've aged with each reading I find different things that please me about the book. I have ALWAYS said that I didn't think the characters in the book, and the plot, was that realistic because I could never imagine the political economy of the United States becoming anything resembling The dystopia that atlas shrugged described. However, given recent modern history, the woke agenda, BLM, blatant disregard for property rights, the disintegrating educational system, and how stupid most of my fellow academics have become, I've been forced to revise this judgment. Ayn Rand was not all knowing, nor was she error-free, and some of her takes were just ridiculously wrong. The worst for me was that objectivism was a closed system; that you either take it exactly as she produced it, or don't call what you're talking about objectivism. This of course splintered the movement which is why we have the atlas society today. No philosophy is a closed system. I revere Aristotle, but we've improved upon him over the centuries. Indeed, one would think the father of so many "ologies"would have simply counted the number of teeth in a woman's skull, rather than pronouncing they have less teeth than men. One significant correction to the video -- three, not two, of Ayn Rand's books have been made into films. "We the living", "the Fountainhead", "atlas shrugged" (the ladder a fiasco of timelines and movie rights which resulted in three films one for each of the three parts of atlas). For those who have not read it, "we the living" is an outstanding novel. Indeed, I would argue that as a novel (not a philosophical treatise disguised as novel) what is the best of her writing. It's also the best movie made from her works, and it was outstanding if you can suffer subtitles or speak Italian. An interesting backstory. Quickly, the movie was actually commissioned and financed by the Italian fascist government of Mussolini. Upon its debut in theaters, it became apparent to authorities that although it did indeed have a strong anti-communist message, it was a tiny stretch to make it an anti-fascist message as well. So the movie was banned by Mussolini, and it did not surface in the west for another 10 years much to the astonishment of Ayn Rand who never knew it was even made into a movie. So I leave the reader with this quote, which is on my wall right now, and despite her failures, I still honor her successes. I would be a criminal today, in prison or dead, if I had not encountered Ayn Rand that's a very young man. This was one of her successes and indeed this quote serves as an anthem of anti-wokeism. Thanks Ayn. 🔥💯🥰 “In the name of the best within you, do not sacrifice this world to those who are at its worst. In the name of the values that keep you alive, do not let your vision of people be distorted by the ugly, the cowardly, the mindless in those who have never achieved integrity. Do not lose your knowledge that our proper estate is an upright posture, an intransigent mind and a step that travels unlimited roads. Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate, the not-quite, the not-yet, the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish, in lonely frustration for the life you deserved, but have never been able to reach. Check your road and the nature of your battle. The world you desired can be won, it exists, it is real, it's yours.”

@@dasse8717May be if one gets an education, available on YT for free, they will understand how to make money without labor. It's called 'leverage' .. leverage comes from skills, technology, code, taking risk... not just from having a lot of money. If a guy carries a rock all day he can claim to work hard, but who is going to pay top dollar to a guy caring a rock. Of course, some people want to blame others for being rich because it makes it easy for them to accept being a loser. It's now not their fault and they don't have to try to get out of the rut their life is in. It's easy, coz being a loser doesn't take any efforts. Then they go online and crib, to build a tribe of losers.

Thank you for posting this. I was recently speaking with someone about how, growing up with an impoverished mindset, we’re taught that the live of money is the root of all evil. And now, being worth millions, my relationship with money is such that my money goes where it’s tested best. I told him that if I knew then, growing up, that I know now I would’ve been a millionaire a very long time ago. The biggest lesson I’ve learned, about attaining wealth, is if one says that they don’t want money then money will not flow in their direction. Money flows to me everyday because I’m a money magnet. Peace.

I read it 20 years ago and it has always stayed with me. I am glad to see the book resonating with a new audience, witnessing the fall of money. AR has an amazing grasp of the English language and its idioms ('pinch hitting' used at 9:17) considering it was her 2nd language. It now seems America has altered the phrase 'to make money' and morphed it into 'to print money'. Money (BTC) is the root of all good! I am convinced future history will prove this out. I loved the emphatic book stomp at the end - made me chortle. Like a mike drop. I heard the story Robert told (on another podcast) that when he listened to this passage of the book in an airport, that a man walked in front of him hailing a cab, and the man was wearing a suit with a pattern of DOLLAR SIGNS all over it - perhaps a nod from Ayn in the afterlife?

As one of the people who pointed this out, I'd be curious to hear your opinion on some musings. At 10:00 it seems to me that Rand tackles this. I interpret this in a few ways. First, it appears as a clear indication that she is perfectly aware of 'the full quote'. Which leads to the second thought that she starts with the colloquially truncated version deliberately. Call it 'reading the room' in formulating her argument, engaging the widest audience upfront before engaging with, let's say, the tougher crowd. And that tougher crowd is the third thought. It seems to me that she's essentially criticizing and addressing directly precisely that group. She seems to plant her flag unambiguously on the side of 'you're wrong'. I can't say I've thought it through enough to firmly say 'I agree', but I'd certainly say she makes a compelling case. Thoughts?

You are correct, in context that verse is speaking to materialism whereas believers are to be spiritual. Those that seek to increase carnal riches will inevitably increase their carnality to their own destruction. The possession of money is not a problem (see Lydia) but the desire to be wealthy and also the preference for the wealthy is spoken against at length throughout both the gospels and epistles. A man cannot serve God and Mammon, materialism is idolatry.

In the context of Rand's philosophy, money is supposed to represent a fair and voluntary exchange of value. Unfortunately, money loses its reliability and stability when the government influences it through artificial inflation, welfare states, wealth distribution, crony capitalism, subsidies, socialism, communism, progressive taxation, and so much more. Human nature isn't perfect. Some will compromise moral values to have a piece of greed. Thus, makes its way through our leaders. In Rand's ideal economic society, it will be fair. But life isn't ideal, and we must play the game of money the best we can.
