Thanks a lot for watching this video. The vlogging/docu style is a bit different to our other content, but human and physical geography is a passion of ours, so we found it very interesting making this video. While we acknowledge that we do not know every single detail about Jakarta's sinking issue, we did our research and read numerous peer-reviewed journal articles (as supposed to just grey literature and News reports) about the issue. Kylie, who is a geography highschool teacher has a Bachelor degree with majors in Geography and Religion and I have a PhD (+ 2 postdocs, + 10 years as a university research scientist) in geography and remote sensing. I inspected satellite imagery and digital elevation models in collaboration with work colleagues from Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta to independently verify the spatial distribution and change over time in land subsistence in Jakarta. We really tried to be as informed as possible before making this video. We always appreciate your comments and are always interested in learning more, so please let us know if you have further insights about Jakarta. Justru gara2 gedung2 tinggi dan besar itu jakarta temggelam ? Tau ga kenapa? Karena gedung2 itu butuh air, airnya diambil dari air tanah. Terus air tanah kenapa? Air tanah itu butuh diambil dari tanah dgn cara di bor tanahnya sampai ke bawah sampai naik airnya muncrat ke permukaan akibat dari pengeboran itu tanah semakin turun dan permukaan air semakin naik. Gue yakin 100% gedung2 besar tinggi di area sudirman kuningan dan area jakarta selatan lainnya pasti menggunakan air tanah. Makanya tanah jakarta turun dan permukaan air naik.. buktinya kalau banjir , di area jakarta selatann banjirnya parah. Salahkan orang2 cina kaya yg ga ngotak. Mereka perlu diusir dari Indonesia.

Giant Sea Wall is not a solution, land will keep sinking even there is a wall there. The solution is to go to the root cause which is to prevent people getting fresh water from the soil and replaced it by pipe water system which water comes from Jatiluhur Dam and Karian Dam (almost complete). Water treatment facility for Jatiluhur dam is under construction and private sector has been getting green light to undergo huge project to build huge pipe water system that will cover whole Jakarta. Around 11 banks will finance the project. New Karian dam will be the third biggest dam in Indonesia. The same problem was also happened in Tokyo before and they can solve the problem now with pipe water system.

Fun fact. Jakarta is no longer the capital city of Indonesia as of yesterday, March 28, because a law has been passed confirming Jakarta's future status. So legally, Jakarta will give up its status as the capital of Indonesia and will be replaced by "Nusantara" in Kalimantan.

No the water canisters are just for some small area in the north of Jakarta, not for all around the city. There are areas where the Water Company (PAM) hasn't reached yet, some of which are ilegal housings area. That's where the water canisters are going. Apparently you start your journey from the worst part of Jakarta, probably one of the ilegal housings. So it absolutely doesn't represent what the whole of Jakarta really is. Jakarta is HUGE, population during the day is more than 10 million people. Jakarta is a metropolis city, visit SCBD to see how metropolis Jakarta is. The social root problem of the ilegal housings you have just visited is very deep, and the people there don't want to be relocated.

No wonder why house in North Jakarta are become cheaper and cheaper (except some elite residences like Pantai Indah Kapuk / PIK and Kelapa Gading) while southern Jakarta (Jaksel) more and more expensive since it was build on higher ground. Our government has built the Giant Sea Wall project, Where there are three phases A, B and C. which is currently in phase A as you can see there 1:08 16:20, is in the form of a sea embankment of 46.212 Meter, and is targeted to be completed in 2027. Then proceed to phase B and C in the form of a reclamation island that circling North Jakarta and also equipped with a giant reservoir, or in short is called the NCICD project as the best option to prevent North Jakarta from drowning in 2050. And the main cause is due to land subsidence and abrasion around the coast of Jakarta or North Jakarta, Not because of the significant rise in sea water. Of course the Indonesian government has been aware of it for a long time and certainly knows what the best option is to overcome it. so it is better for your channel to focus on your travel vacation, it is not good to interfere in the affairs of other countries, let alone spread unclear things about the truth that Jakarta will sink from what you see, so your channel is no different from other external media that always fry the news that Jakarta will sink

It is certainly not our intention to "interfere" in Indonesia's affairs, but simply to report on and spread awareness of the fact that Jakarta is sinking due to land subsistence caused my groundwater abstraction from groundwater pumping due to the lack of piped water supplies to millions of people. While seawalls and barrier island will minimise issues from storm surges, only the installation of piped water systems to all areas will stop groundwater abstraction and hence stop Jakarta from sinking. Alluvial soils as found in estuaries (and northern Jakarta) do generally not allow aquifers to be refilled. Also, the lack of water infiltration due to the impervious surfaces of Jakarta is another issue for refilling aquafers. That's currently the main issue (not sea level rise - although that adds to the problem), as we explain in the video. While we acknowledge that we do not know every single detail about Jakarta's sinking issue, we did our research and read numerous peer-reviewed journal articles (as supposed to just grey literature and News reports) about the issue. Kylie has a university Bachelor major in Geography and I have a PhD (+ 2 postdocs, + 10 years as a university research scientist) in geography and remote sensing. I inspected satellite imagery and digital elevation models in collaboration with work colleagues from Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta to independently verify the spatial distribution and change over time in land subsistence in Jakarta. We really tried to be as informed as possible before making this video. We did read about the Great Garuda Project (construction of barrier islands) but there is not much recent information about that online (except some mentioned it was cancelled). We appreciate your comments and are always interested in learning. We really tried our best to be as well informed and objective as possible, and our goal was simply to educate and spread awareness (not to get involved in politics, as that is definitely not our area of expertise 😉).
