Seeing a giraffe for the first time in the wild was a surreal and incredible experience. They are wonderful animals.

It's the animal I wanted to become when I was a small child. Sadly I just grew up to an adult human.

The veterinarians and rangers you see in the clip putting the tracking device on the giraffe (and measuring and checking on it) are from giraffeconservation.org/ - if you care about giraffes, maybe think of donating or giving a donation as a present to someone who love giraffes... I am not affiliated with them, but learnt about them just today from Ed Yong's article in The Atlantic (which is very beautifully written and offers tons of facts I didn't know before), and discovered that they are the ONLY giraffe NGO in the world. I will donate tonight. Giraffes are wonderful, so beautiful and strange at the same time, such iconic creatures. We shouldn't let them perish.

We don’t need to tag all these animals the issue is the same worldwide- we need to reduce our population, mitigate pollution and designate vast portions of the earth for re-wilding.
@drinklish29634 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I think no matter what we do, our numbers have become unsustainable. I remember reading that, according to archeological evidence, humans have always hovered between 800 million and 1.1 billion members. Even with these more reasonable numbers and far less technology allowing for abuse, we still managed to destroy and pollute. When I tell people that you should seriously consider not bringing a child into this world, I am met with puzzled looks, and the most common answer I am given is: "What harm could 2 or 3 more humans possibly cause?"

The USA has vastly more population density than the countries where giraffes live. The problem is capitalist economics, not population.

@Bryce Selective breeding is a useful tool for creating animals with traits we need. The "degeneracy" comes from breeders choosing to focus excessively on specific traits while ignoring negative traits that their animals are accumulating. For example, pugs have terrible health because breeders focused on small size and cuteness with no regard to the health of the bloodline, leading to a whole race of dogs with chronic health issues. Sometimes there is also a lot of inbreeding involved, because its easier to emphasize specific traits that way. But off course the inbreeding worsens the genetic situation even further.

What The Uncolored Man says is mostly true. Toys "R" Us is mostly out of business now, almost all of their retail stores were shut down, though they have re-opened two U.S. stores, & never completely left Asia. Here's a CNN article from a while back discussing their plans to re-open the two U.S. stores, and a transcription of an NPR programme from when they did: amp.cnn.com/cnn/2019/06/21/business/toys-r-us-stores-comeback/index.html www.npr.org/2019/11/29/783762495/toys-r-us-reopens-2-stores-under-new-ownership-after-painful-bankruptcy

Perhaps they need a support group. There are some characteristic behaviors of giraffes that might enable support from certain active groups. The neck fighting that was shown is only between males. Males and females stay segregated. After the neck fighting between males, the victor always mounts the loser. There is a ~95% ratio of successful penetrations and copulations during these mounts. Evidence seems to support that more than 95% of all giraffe copulations are homosexual. There's your support group.
