Hehehe... reminds me of a day back in 1986. I was on Thirsk platform doing a bit of spotting when a class 31 passed through on the down slow with no less than about 30 brake vans! It was an interesting sight... sad I never managed to get a photo of the rake. Must have been a transfer trip. That train must have affected my subconsciousness because I recently bought a couple of the unusual Oxford Rail 6 wheel brake vans. Thanks for jogging my memory mukka. Cheers. Gaz

Hi Sam, my suggestion for the unknown, numberless brake van is to use it on a small breakdown train. I have a small hornby yellow breakdown crane, which I've companied with a truck (for the hook and chain) and a small van for effect, normally pulled by a small 0-4-0 or 0-6-0 tank engine. Just a suggestion.

Hi Sam. Great video as always. Just FYI, it actually was relatively common to see strings of cabooses on the backs of freight trains here in the states (Not sure if they do that across the pond). The basic idea was that it allowed the railroad to move them to where they were needed even if there weren't enough trains for each caboose to go separately. This practice fell out of fashion as cabooses were replaced, and now seeing any cabooses on a freight train is rare. I don't think they ever strung 25 together though... Cheers!

I have that same Bachmann LMS brake van but with duckets and obv a different running number (Bachman 38-552A). And im surprized that you dont own any 'pill box' brake vans, they looks great on the end of a long wagon train, SR or BR, both look great

Honestly, I'm 54 years old and didn't know brake vans existed until I found Sam's channel. I'm from the U.S., so that is part of my excuse. I do like trains (and model trains) but knew very little about British rail. There are probably better ways to enlighten myself on British engines and rolling stock history, but I bet they wouldn't be as much fun! So, Sam, you're my teacher of British rail history like it or not.

Sam, at 3:58 you show a Southern Railway liveried van that is likely a Wrenn W5038 body where the previous owner had replaced the chassis with an old Hornby-Dublo one. By about 1974 the Wrenn Chassis had changes to make it very free running. It had metal tyred wheels on pin-point axles running in Nylon pin-point bearing inserts in the die cast frame. Also had the large metal Tri-ang Mk 3 coupling as standard. The sloppy Tonbridge transfer may be owner additions. If you search for Wrenn W5038, you should see this van from about 1976 but you will not see a genuine Hornby-Dublo plastic bodied wagon or van in SR markings. By the time of Hornby-Dublo went plastic for the SD6 series around 1958 they had ceased making pre-nationalisation liveries for about 6 years or more. Bought several of these W5038 vans in 1976 from the Model Dockyard in Swanston St Melbourne. Such a bargain at the time for Wrenn quality at $2.50 compared to Hornby R218 BR brake vans at $3.75 or the R107 LMS lighted one at $5.95. So two Wrenn vans and change for one Hornby LMS brake. At the time the Dockyard had all Wrenn at cheaper prices than Hornby equivalents as they went direct to Wrenn rather than deal with the mark ups of the Hornby distributor and Hornby high export prices. A time of upheavals.

Well a train full of brake-vans thats a secure train for sure :-) But thank Mr. Westinghouse for his ingenious invention of the air-brake. The air brake done much for safety. I remember indistinct the freight trains of the swiss-railways (SBB) which had still disused brake huts on their goods trains in the early 1990s. Every 5-6 wagon had a hut, I counted back then. An old man told me once the story his father told: One winter his father gave commands by the whistle on the engine, as usual to brake the train. But this day, there where no good brakes on the train. After come into station, they searched for the brakemans in their huds (the brake huds on the goods wagon) and found mostly dead! Poor lads where frozen to death on the train in winter. Given that the man who told me this was in his 80s and that his father told him when he was young...this happened maybe in the early 1900 years Sad story and we have to thank Mr. Westinghouse for his air-brake! I KNOW i was inside :-) At Lokschuppen Aumühle-Museum I climbed into a brake-vans-hut, you see here at. 1:45 minutes. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqCUZXqnjaqfgsU

With the brakevan without coupling you could wrap a very very thin metal wire to each buffer and make a sort of "handle" to which the other rolling stock's hornby coupling hooks can couple. They do this sometimes on model railways. :)

6:40 you should turn that brake van into a tool shed! And speaking of something you should do with your brakevans, you should repaint one into a Sam's Trains livery! 6:50 you should defintiely try to get more cabooses. On many heritage lines in America, nearly every pssenger train has at least one caboose in it (sometimes the entire train is just cabooses), so you could run it with your other American passenger cars

You should do a running session where the trains on all three lines are brake van trains, like their special excursion trains, also I made my railroad use cabooses in the modern world
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea - thanks for the idea!! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@NorbertRoll5 жыл бұрын
Haha Sam, a nice idea. But not the longest with brake cars I think. You should compose a train with all your brake passenger coaches.
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Norbert - and that's a very cool idea!! :D Cheers, Sam :)

With the couplingless brake van you could use it for a how to video on how to replace broken couplings.
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
Ooh nice idea actually!! :D

For the broken brake van you could make it a passenger brake coach for the hornby 4 weels.
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
That is a great idea actually - I could try that!! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Hiya :) @ 6:35 with that Brake van with no coupling or no buffers 1 side - do as I do with my Airfix Ventilated Good Van which also has missing coupling & broken buffers - which came with my Airfix B. R. Diesel (D5531 B. R. Green) Mixed Freight Set came with 8 double curves & power clip & Battery Controller - which I got when I was about 8 yrs old & only was £15.50p!!! Any way, the only way that I have found that I can use it - is to put it in front of the Loco so that it pushes it along rather than it being pulled along - but beware - as I found - can't go too fast other wise it will fall off & crash the Loco!!! lol
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
Hey James! Ooh that's a cool idea - I'll have to try that for sure!! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Even with all those brakevans, I still get the feeling of you still couldn’t stop a runaway train, if this was a Thomas and Friends episode for failure to use brain, or the some dumb reason beside coupling snapped, came loose even though it didn’t in Stephen movie, or when Samson cocked up and got too cocky.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
haha you might be right there, lol! ;D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
