WHAT i LIKE MOST ABOUT YOU chris is that you present the realities of gold panning and prospecting. No Hype. I have sat beside the gold rivers and panned and maybe you can make a living out of it but not get rich like most people think you will

I checked out some Indonesian gold panning videos. Holy crap! The amount they scoop up seems unreal! It was all that tiny, light powder gold. One pan was the same as one day's worth in these videos!

It's frozen time here in MI. The kiddie pool I put in basement isn't big enough for my XP betea pan. The little I got to mess with it showed me I can get way more dirt worked than with my super sluice pan. I anticipate being able to recover more gold in 2025 panning with the betea pan. Looking forward for spring coming.

still think you should make a version of this pan (from wood) with a couple rings in it like a modern pan. Would be super easy with a wood lathe.

Would it be beneficial to classify and maybe start you panning in the moving water? The silt and lighter particles could clear out faster.

Hi Chris. While I have never seen you use a Turbopan, I would be interested to learn whether you have ever used one and if so, your thoughts on them. Edit to add, it's my only pan and I suspect I may have chosen poorly.

OK, so I don't know anything about gold panning, so ignore me if I sound like an idiot. I've watched enough videos to see that the powder gold at the end can easily be swept away with water. That's how you put it into the bucket. So when you scoop a bunch of dirt and immediately start swirling it, it seems that any gold on top is going to float away with the rest. How can it not? Wouldn't you get more gold if you shook/jiggle/agitate the dry-ish dirt more before starting with the water? Presumably the heavier gold would migrate towards the bottom as the pan was vibrated. In fact, wouldn't a battery powered vibrating massager held against the pan for a minute or two help extract the gold? Again, I know nothing about how the gold moves in sand. It just surprises me when you immediately start swishing the dirt. Those light flakes haven't had a chance to get to the bottom yet!

It would be interesting to know how long it takes for the majority of the gold to reach the bottom during stratification. Might cut down on excess effort if a person knew precisely when and how much lighter material could be washed away.

I wonder if you could make them on a lathe? I wonder how important the angle would be on the inside....hmm..... Could you even make them from resin to get colours and since you'd be turning it on a lathe you could customise the areas of drag by how you smooth it down, during the polishing steps. You could have a really rough band around the edge with almost graduated roughness as you go further in....hmmm. Now I just need to get a lathe....

Punch a 2 m.m.[ for flower and small bits ] hole on one side of the bottom of the cone and drop things that pass thru into a regular pan. Just use a finger over the hole to go back and forth between regular Batea and classifying batea. Should speed the gold seperation up greatly. As you not workin all the overburden off the gold, you giving the gold a trap door escape. Thank me later.

“In virgin ground that has been worked before”??? LOL. We must have very different definitions for the word “virgin”. By the way … the “potato pan” thing comes from the automated captions. Almost every single time you say “batea pan” the captions will read “potato pan”. PS. And the word is “batea”, and NOT “betea”. In Spanish “batea los huevos” is a baking term that means “beat the eggs”. “Batea” comes from the root word “batir” which means to mix or stir.

Knowing the gold is at the bottom and a tiny amount at that. Why swirl it so much? Can’t you just pull all the light stuff off with your hand and done? All that work and whatever is left is always right at the bottom. I understand you need to stratify but, the gold looks to be only at the bottom point of the pan most of the time. Maybe make a pan with an opening at the bottom that you can open and close real quick. Then just finish off a tiny bit or 10 pans of the trap door stuff at a time.

Awe now why are people mispronouncing batea pan ....the only reason I ever called it a potato pan was because of youtubes automated subtitles 🥚 eggs aside do you know you can't correct the subtitles , the amount of times they come up swearing when you say something somewhat innocently is crazy so potato pans are awesome....but not as good as batea pans...one of them you could gold pan and make dinner in..teh other not so much but it would do the better job of collecting gold....I wonder how stratifying paydirt in an actual potato pan would go? vertical sides and one riffle

Europeans have been extracting gold from rivers and mines for 5,000 years. The Celts, Teutons and Gauls were attacked by the Roman barbarians only because they had immense amounts of gold. Might be interesting to research about ancient European methods of gold extraction.
