The Worst Argument in Gaming

What still baffles me to this day is that most so called "gamers" have little to no understanding of the industry they spend thousands if not more a year on and that concepts like "player retention" and l"ive service" have little to no meaning to them. Most think that companies like Bungie wants to satisfy the customer, when in fact they want to retain you. ...And if you don't understand the difference, then you're part of the problem of the issues that plague modern gaming and most likely also you are critical about.

Plus games back then were "one price for the game" kinda deal, no microtransactions, no battle passes to pay for the grind of doing, modding was endorsed without a poor multimillion company restricting it all jsut so they have more freedom to be "creative" with what they shove into the in-game microtransactions store and are sterile with how little content they can get away with giving to the players and sell stuff community could of made prolly better as DLCs as well, one or two "story missions" kind of deal, as a treat to their money whales, oh and yeah expansion packs back then, with enough content to be their own game unlike what's the case with DLCs nowadays.

It also killed off talented developers. Back before the 2010s you had to optimize and perfect games like crazy, especially regarding graphics. Everything you put in the game had to matter, more or less. Both the code and visuals where practically perfected to be as efficient as possible, at least relatively to today. Nowadays they're so incompetent that games run like molasses despite having 1000x the processing power, memory storage, etc...

Its not necessarily all Graphic Obsession. You have to think about it like this, youre developing a Game for several years without earning a dime up until to the release of the product. A Game that comes out today has basically the tech of 4 years ago. So its a financial Risk to develop Games. How do you mitigate that? Well the industry trend is to just make the most bog standard triple A Game and then sell it to the wider Mass. It works as you can tell by games like Fifa and CoD. Even though CoD had a lot of scrutiny your average consumer still bought it and the sales numbers show. Indie devs are often newcomers to the industry so they need to have a banger of a Game or the Sales won't finance the dev time it took to make the game. Well how do you finance the dev time at all then until Release? Publishers are an option if you lack funding ( for example Devolver Digital). It goes like this: You Pitch your Game -> they give you a Budget -> You develop the Game TLDR; Big Game Devs nowadays have found a formula that works for Games and their Average Consumer, so they apply it as long as they can to min max earnings, developing Games is always a financial risk. (look at Volition, devs of Saints row, now closing)

Old games might have some quirks that wouldn’t exist these days, but they were made less cynically before. It’s almost like the focus was on being entertaining, or even FUN. What a concept! Aaaall the way back then you also didn't have day 1 patch notes nor updates really. You had one chance with your game, you either went out strong or it flopped instantly. Oh and expansion packs? Good ones were like their own separate game you could get on top of the regular game and not just some funky overpriced skins and maybe a "story mission" or two. And they didn't have microtransactions hamfisted everywhere into the *fully priced games* like nowadays. It was one price for whole damn thing then expansions. Not an exlusive payment to open the game and get greeted to a store with a game attached to it.

To me, it always boils down to whether or not a game has *Soul.* The overwhelming majority of modern games being released have little to no *soul,* making the experience bland, boring, uninspired, and unmemorable. To your point, you enjoyed New Vegas not because it has been your favorite game for decades, but because the game has an incredible amount of *soul* in every area of its design. When we enjoy and prefer older titles, it isn't because we're longing for the days in which we initially played it, though that sometimes is the case, we prefer them because of the sheer amount of charm, creativity, vision, drive, and passion behind the projects. Market capitalism has put a seemingly impenetrable chokehold around the *soul* of videogames, leaving most modern titles with little to no reason to play them. The argument of nostalgia is perpetually taken out of context; we're not pining for our youth, we're pining for games that have *soul.*

Yeah loads of people will scream "nostalgia" at everything, but they don't realize what they're actually arguing. Nostalgia blindness is often found among people who haven't touched the game they're talking about in years, thus allowing their memory to be vague and recall things like better controls or maybe better voice acting that was never actually there. If you just played it yesterday, you've got a far more accurate memory and it's hard to be blinded.

I think that a lot of them are kind of new to gaming, they weren't hardcore gamers for 10 years, they just started playing video games in their 20s because it become popular. They are not able to bear the older graphics and can not enjoy old games, because they don't understand that technological progress isn't everything. Most climatic game I played was literally made in 2001, it looks bad I admit, it was limited by its times and it doesn't have artstyle that keeps it fresh, but I still call it most climatic game I played because of the dialogues, story, characters etc. People who cannot bear older graphics will not be able to immerse themselves and enjoy old games, so they call them crappy instead as massive cope, to not feel like they miss on something great

Look at what I did with games from the past on modern consoles like Final Fantasy 7, The Legend of Dragoon, Kingdom Heart 1 & 2, Silent Hill 2, Metroid Prime, Metal Gear Solid 3, Knights of the Old Republic 2, Dead Space 1 & 2, Halo 4, and, of course, recently, Fallout 4. I think part of why having such honest debates has become more difficult is due to more people being introduced to the Internet at a younger age. Ages so young, that the words they see easily make deep impressions in their mind, ones that stay their as they develop their values and world view. A great way to look at Recency vs Nostalgia in video games is also to consider the music scene: "Classics" which we all love listening to from previous decades were for the most part the Pop music of their generation. The ones that survived into further generations were the ones well written or which had something unique. There were plenty of other tracks from that time period that didn't survive because they were just not that good. And looking to modern music, there are heaps of songs in the Pop music scene that are popular for a year or two and then disappear, they won't be the ones that survive the test of time. The ones that do become the "classics" of later generations. Same with video games: I still go back and play the games I grew up with; Sega Genesis games, Nintendo 64 games, original Command & Conquer etc. But I'm not going back and playing the flops from that era, they don't survive. Same for modern stuff; games that came out less than a year ago are already fading from public consciousness, they won't survive. But there are absolute bangers being released that will survive the test of time.

And to use your music example as to what primacy bias can do, there's a lot of good music nowadays with musicians far more talented than the old musicians, but will get shoved away because they're not "legends" like the old ones. People are sad guitar music is "dead" but ignore that there are countless of amazing guitarists who are still revolutionizing techniques, but when presented to the public, they're usually dismissed for whatever reasons. It's like lamenting being born in an age where we don't exist with the legends everyone keeps talking about, while ignoring the potential of new legends to rise in our current times. We see scientists or artists who were hated by the people of their times, and we know "they were ahead of their times"... People are scared of traveling to the past because of the butterfly effect which can drastically change the future, but fail to realize that they are drastically changing the future TODAY, and it all depends on weather or not I hit the "reply" button after writing this huge-ass comment. In short: Nostalgia is a bad argument, recency bias and affect opinions, but so can primacy bias, which is the correct argument that people should be using instead of nostalgia.

Thank you for being an honest male role model for gamers worldwide. Some may criticize you for being grandstanding or attempting to give a parental lecture on these topics, but in reality, clearly some people need a parental figure to point these things out. It's a plague on our psyches to continue to just ignore issues and consume the world around us. I hope that yours, and the many others that share your sentiment, continue to flourish and be able to reach more people with what could now be considered a "fresh" perspective. I remember when my older brother of 6 years would give me insight into facets of life that I didn't understand. I would hear it and not think much at first, but hours later it would click and I'd silently appreciate him for it. He unfortunately became an addict to many things and has slowly deteriorated to a husk of himself. Now I feel like I'm the one giving him insight into facets of life. It feels odd and I'm sure it makes the both of us feel frustrated, but when you really care about something; you just man up and do it. And these topics, while it could be considered frivolous and unimportant in the Grand Scheme of the World, the underlying mentalities that led to the State of Gaming in 20xx still persist and leach into other areas of creativity and innovation. Dark Souls actually helped me fight off my depression at a young age. I had suffered in silence for years until I couldn't keep myself together. My family thought I was just "faking it" which made things worse. I was shoved into the work force as a temp and when I was eventually let go (as most temps usually are) my father thought that I was nothing more than a lazy good-for-nothing that couldn't hold down a job and was about ready to kick me out of the house. Instead, one of the peers they met at Sunday congregation told my dad and mom they would take me off their hands for a few days as they needed someone to house-sit anyway. There I was, separated from my family again (as I was all alone when I went to university before flunking out the first time); but I had my computer and Prepare to Die was just released on PC. The world was isolated, cold, and inherently hostile. Everything that I had felt up to that point in my own life resonated with this setting. Things would attack you without any reason or motive, _yet here I was free to attack back._ The world was against me, hated me even; and yet it could not kill me. It just changed my outlook honestly, one of the first stepping stones which did so. I spent five days by my lonesome, eating scraps and getting my face smashed in until the game's walls gave out from my rampant cranial bludgeoning. I immediately began indulging in media like Berserk and Demon's Souls; settings that were excruciatingly hostile and outright evil and began mentally incorporating how I felt which later gave me new ways to think and mechanisms on how to cope. I know it sounds stupid, but this helped me more than the antidepressants a few years later I didn't even need them anymore. I think I've earned at least a little nostalgia here and there.

I have to say.. darksouls really helped me through university. I was living with my cousin at the time. A very hostile and negative person at the time. Had a bunch of friends there too.. smoking weed daily. I had to work too. Was havely depressed in my teenage years. Got over it. Now i got to be a heavier depressed adult. It got me through it... throw yourself against a wall untill you break it. It doesn't work? Learn something new do something different and it gets easier. I played the rest of from soft games after. Replayed dark souls and it was way easier second time around. I have to say.. i got from feeling like giving up to top of the class. It taught me to do my best and change my approach. I just had this interaction with somebody where I commented on a Monster Hunter video that basically asked if too many conveniences were causing Monster Hunter to change as a franchise for the worse. This was meant to be a sophisticated discussion where people can share differing viewpoints as to why they felt the way they did, and was presented this way by the poster of the video. I stated my opinion that yes, the identity of the series IS being ruined by, and for the sake of, convenience. Someone immediately responded to me with “that sounds a lot like a ‘back in my day’ type of statement. Things change.” Like what???? I don’t even think this person has played any of the older titles. I never said I was opposed to change. Just that the change that was happening over the latest iterations of the series has not been good. He immediately figured I was blinded by nostalgia instead of taking any of my points seriously… and he hasn’t even played the old games. While I myself have played just about every game in the franchise. Who would have a better understanding of this topic? How could he decide if it’s changing for the worse if he never played the old games?? It was the easiest option for him to just say “nostalgia goggles” rather than doing any actual research and forming a real opinion and then sharing it like an adult.

It's not nostalgia. Most modern games are corporatized, soulless, and repeat patterns and trends most of the time. Monetization takes precedent over everything. Whether anyone wants to admit or not, the politicalization of almost everything has ruined character development most of the time. Updates have become a reliance on fixing unfinished, unoptimized games instead of a benefit to make them even better. Over inflated budgets with less and less content lately for higher asking prices. I don't see any of this being sustainable. Maybe it's become to mainstream and been ruined by the masses some would say. Maybe it's simply corporate greed. Maybe it's a lack of talent and creativity in our culture. Maybe it's a combonation of all 3. Either way something is wrong and your right, it's not nostalgia.

Exactly this. I've argued this a few times. To me it just shows most people do not understand what nostalgia is and how it works. It's a sensory experience based on memory. Enjoying a game is a mechanical-sensory reward feedback based on your immediate environment, nothing to do with memories. Many of us have wonderful memories of playing with toys, but we all know most grown men aren't gonna get any enjoyment pretending their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures are fighting their Shredder figure. The terms "relativity" and "subjectivity" have both become synonymous to excuses made by people that can't accept the fact that, yes, the objective reality of quality does exist even in the art/entertainment field. Heck, I'd say and argue it exists a crap ton more there, but it's just a complex thing to discuss due to the nature of human creativity and passion. That's coming from me, an illustrator in the indie art space. I'm not the best at what I do, but I damn sure well know just how much the quality of my works impact whether or not I'll get clients or if the projects I'm making will be considered by those that see 'em as great, good enough, or just outright bad. If I don't allow for myself to understand and live in that reality, I cannot improve my craft to an objective degree. And, before anyone asks the question often structured as "but how do you measure quality in art", there are ways to measure quality, but it'll have to depend on a lot of factors, the medium of the work, the intent, and so on. For example, a film's cinematography can be critiqued with how the scene's color scheme is in line with color theory or the choice of a camera's lens, positioning, movement. In my case with the illustrations I make, how I depict anatomy, lighting, shadows, architecture, and even abstract ideas are subject to methods of measuring real-life things that I learned back in my engineering college days and how I've studied the field I'm now in. While nostalgia may be a factor as to why we love so many old products, people forget that it is, in fact, just that... a factor.

This was a very well made video. Great job on the editing, use of background music, and well spoken script. I dont have anything to really criticise either than the intentional ramble in the middle of the video about you playing Destiny over the Witcher. I 100% agree with AAA game creativity being dead but creative games as a whole are fruitful in the indie and VR game scene. If you are fortunate enough to have a powerful enough PC or laptop to run VR games then you can open a massive library of games that are creative and engage you in new ways instead of using your thumbs on a controller or mouse and keyboard. A few friends of mine have been getting away from the inital VR experience/arcade games like Beat Saber and stepping into the world of co-op/MMO realm of virtual reality and it is absolutely amazing what developers are able to do with the new platform of VR. The only issue at this present moment in time which has been enabled by the Gaming industry as a whole is that both indie and VR games are generally Early Access titles that you can pay for in advance but have to wait until the product is done. Yes you do get to play the product but it is not indicative of the final result. I hope the majority of people soon burnout of the current gaming market so that publishers realise how boring their product is and have to put time and work back into their IPs but until that happens, we will see the same games being pumped out month after month from the big name companies.

Not only that but D1 still has all of their strikes available for anyone to play and crucible maps and modes if I'm not mistaken. They weren't sent to a vault for later re-use like what we're seeing with Destiny 2. Witch Queen had a fun campaign and fun exotics and strikes (when they aren't GMs) but by the end of it all I wanted more from the DLC but with their motto of not wanting overdo it with bringing content. That'll never happen and will always be a money game than a game meant for players.

I play games for almost 20 years...and know what? Actually not so much has changed. There is one masterpiece, 2 more great games, 5 more good games with some problems and 10 that can be described as "bearable". And hundreds of shit games that are so bad that they are not even worth of attention given to them in any way. It happens every 3-5 years since 90-s and nothing has changed nowdays. What HAS changed is an attitude to games. Now people are waiting for every second game to be a masterpiece. And for the most part their hopes get crushed by reality. If some MMORPG I've been waiting for some time become garbage, I'll just move forward and play something else and wait for next MMORPG. It is what it is. It is life. Life is big. I personally love the Witch Queen campaign, despite my frustration with legend difficulty (which I gave up on when I got to Savathûn's second phase). My favorite part was Ghost yelling at Savathûn about the various allies we've lost and that she dared suggest he join her. Lightfall was not as fun as Witch Queen, but that was mostly because of the characters not being very fun (aside from Sam, Caitl, and Calus). I wish I was able to experience Taken King the same way D1 veterans had, but I'm still glad I was able to experience it in any capacity.

A lot of these recent expansions launch with less activities cause of the seasonal model. Personally, I miss just buying an expansion and having content from that to play at my own pace, not worrying about fomo or sunsetting.

So glad you brought up the God of War example. Every time I mention that the OG trilogy are much better games than the current ones the nostalgia argument always comes up, saying that I am stuck in the past or that I just want Kratos to be a "mindless murderer". As someone who believes a videogame needs to be a *game* before anything else, and that how good the gameplay and interactive experience is defines 70-80% of its quality, I would rather take going on a rampage against a pantheon of gods than hours of cutscenes, (unskippable) sections in which you are just walking around for a character to throw some exposition and a pretentious story.

very great video again. i agree here aswell. for me, Elden Ring was my first ever souls game. and i really liked it. I then went and bought the Dark Souls Trilogy because I wanted to experience more of the franchise. i played Dark Souls 3 and i really loved it, liked it more than Elden Ring. when someone online would say they think DS3 is better than ER some people would just say its Nostalgia or that people liked Dark Souls 3 and then they played ER and it wasnt the same so they disliked it cuz there "wasnt a new game to blame" and that once a souls game comes AFTER elden ring that Then people would hate the new game and love ER. of course this argument is ridiculous and is just people trying to use Falacies to not have to Actually use real Arguments as to why something is or isnt better. and their "argument" doesnt work on me either - I wasnt a Dark Souls 3 player going into Elden Ring prepaired to hate on the new game. it was the opposite like you with Fallout. I played Elden Ring first and then I went back and played the Older game, so Nostalgia or "wanting to hate the newer game" didnt exist for me as I played it in reverse order and Ive found DS3 more enjoyable than ER.

Its weird to think anyone would dislike a Fromsoft game anyway, they pretty much always deliver when it comes to the quality of their games. And comparing Elden Ring to DS3, honestly its just kind of a preference of whether you prefer a more linear style of gameplay or open world. I prefer the linear style of souls games, but i wont deny Elden Ring is a masterpiece.

Oh boi ,this is gonna be a long comment, especially with the 2. part when I go a bit off topic. When I talk about how older games were better programmed and made and they say something along those lines of "but it looks better nowadays", I tend to use and try to popularise my made up term "progression and advances inflation" (open for suggestions). It stands for the progression and advances human kind made and will make regardless of what a specifically 1 person or a company does. Just like normal inflation for money, you have to adjust for the "inflation" of progress and compare it that way. For games specifically that means you have to look at how hard was it to get a certain quality of graphics. How much budget in relation to the market of that time did they had? What kind of hardware and power had they to play around with? If you think about it that why, many arguments fall instantly apart, especially those from AAA studios/publishers. Every time they talk about "how expensive it is to make a game", they conveniently also forget how freaking huge the gaming market got and how much money can be made compared to 20 or even 10 years ago. Engines got so good, ppl can make great games with a handful of ppl, sometimes if they are talented even with 1 person. You could have never done that back then. The average power a PC or console has is so great, that you have a lot of play room as a programmer. Every time I watch doku-esque videos about how older games were made and what kind of workarounds they had to make, because you only had for example 256mb of ram, I'm amazed. Devs nowadays (more often than not reluctantly in the AAA sector) almost never optimise any more. All this has to be remembered and accordingly adjusted for before comparing a game from 20 years ago to now and most often than not, it turns out older games were objectively better made than now. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- While I'm at it, every time the topic of a discussion is about the graphics of a game, ppl tend to say "The visuals look good/bad", but the visual of a game =/= graphic, to be more specific graphics are only a part of the visuals of a game. While stuff like lvl design, atmosphere, setting and art style all influences the visuals of a game, the graphics is own part and mostly the tech part of the visuals and therefore usually very objective unlike the art style for example. That means that a game can look good with shitty graphics and vise versa. A example for that (and usually very controversial topic) would be Elden Ring. The Graphics of the game are really bad/old, especially with the performance it eats on the PC, but it still looks amazing. That is just 1 example of misused or poorly understood terms. Why am I telling this? Well, besides giving my opinion, which comes from a random ass guy from the internet form your point of view, I noticed over the years, that many ppl use many terms wrong or at least don't differentiate between different concepts and it fitted to this video IMO. I think a agreed upon vocabulary for gaming terms would help lessen misunderstandings, help to make better and constructive criticisms and reduce or at least better expose those idiots, who try to split hairs with their words or twist arguments for example stuff along the lines of "it isn't pay2win when you can unlock it" or "it's only cosmetic". Because to those ppl I could just say gameplay =/= game experience and be done, but as it stands I would have to explain all that shit like I did for graphics and visuals too and god only knows how much they would love to twist those long and sometimes nuanced explanations to fit their argument, because they think Blizzard and co are their friend or something, tbh IDK why they do shit like that, which clearly doesn't benefit them. It's like they're secretly shareholders or something.

@@getoofedonn9401 Just slap the 3rd to the 6th generation Honestly those are the best games i have seen. 7th started to die and in the 8th we saw only stragglers of good games. the 9th generation is COMPLETELY DEAD. XBX and PS5 literally have no good games hell ps3 had more this far in than BOTH COMBINED. Steam is the only thing left keeping gaming togeather even nintendo is dying out trying to support all the weight consoles need. They are the Industry leaders and have made a massively succesful console but 3rd parties STILL avoid them chasing the worst trends in the industry.... I blame APPLE and GOOGLE for this Mobile battle pass BS.

Solid video Hotel! I haven't seen anyone talk about this topic in comparing the old vs new, but actual competition between studios. Most studios that pushed the boundaries that aimed to be number one either became shells of their former selves, went bankrupt, or were forced to close their doors by publishers (EA). On the 360 you could play almost 3,000 games on the series x maybe 2,000 games. I couldn't find accurate data based on trueachievements' database.

Just found the channel. Wanted to leave a comment to help with engagement. Really fair, well-thought out, reasonable points, like with the give and take bt nostalgia and recency bias. To ideas like the concept of pandering to the twitter mob and terrible writing in games like Borderlands 3: People who are teenagers around 2010-today seem extremely emotionally stunted. Whoever was parenting them did a pretty terrible job with teaching basic discourse while monitoring internet use. So you end up with virulent troll 4chan types who are on the wrong side of every issue or uncompromising, humorless, child-like social justice warriors who often are on the right side of certain major issues but represent so poorly they end up being a detriment to their own argument. These people went through college, lacked any sort of self critiquing abilities, discovered they could shout their actions into being correct no matter how divisive or detrimental they are and they proceeded with that attitude into not only online discourse but also into all sorts of writing jobs. At the same time, the over 45ish crowd seems to hold a significant number of individuals hellbent on causing a level of self destructive arrogance and social regression not seen since late 1930s germany. Often in direct response to the mangled messy attempt at social justice made by the aforementioned. Somewhere in that mix are millenials and Gen Xers mortified by the collective social waves of acid rapidly spewed by both groups and washing over everything that was somehow actually working and improving from the 90s-late 2000s. AT the moment, these are rudderless generations, perhaps with their major claim to fame being that they specialize in placating the older and younger hellspawned generations instead of leading by example. All while businesses reach the inevitable destination of late-stage capitalism: Funneling every dollar possible up to people who need it the least while convincing the rest of us to blame each other for every slight big, small, real or imagined That includes, most disturbingly, video games perhaps leading the charge more than any industry in terms of revolutionizing worker abuse, worker rights dissolution and convincing fans to not only fund and incentivize their own misery but actively defend doing so as a point of personal pride. Gamers might be the single most uninformed and self destructive consumers out there on a person to person basis. Which is very hard given how destructive financially, socially or otherwise frequent drinkers, drug users and gamblers can be. The rate of individuals willing to say "I don't have a problem. There is no problem" is higher in gaming circles. The rate of individuals straight up defending predatory gaming far exceeds the rate of people willing to defend alcoholism, drug addiction or gambling addiction as a healthy, perfectly fine option for an enjoyable life. The people who tend to defend this are those teenagers in the group I mentioned, the ones who've been going wild like apes in front of a black monolith everytime some idiot opens another thousand dollar pack of EA ultimate team cards or Cod lootbox crates. Bc they cant possibly be wrong! It's their money! Who cares if they're incentivizing and financing behavior that proves detrimental to everyone else? SOmehow since they're paying it means this only affects them?
