I remember finding out that at 45/45 int/faith with the blindfold mask the dark hand oneshots most unembered players at meta level, often bypassing Tears. Perhaps something can be done with that, as in theory if you can land it in invasions it's considerably better than a parry.

Yup. It’s the ultimate high risk high reward. Can easily deal 1500+ damage with those plus lloyds sword ring and dark clutch (even more if they also have the blindfold mask on). It hits 6 times, and like you said, it can eat through Tears. You’re literally devouring phantoms. My ultimate move I’m going to do is Dark Hand a Gundyr charge. Not a smart move, but it’s the ultimate chad move. Once I do, I’m putting the game down for a week.

@@jooot_6850 With 48.06 poise you can poise through a fully charged Ledo's Great Hammer 2h R2, and only 25.57 to poise through an ultra 2h R1. It has an absolute ton of poise, although the poise frames start late enough that you can't reaction trade.

The fact that Fromsoftware didn't give players a Dark Hand animation similar to the Dark Wraith's will always annoy me when using it, we forcibly hug and give violent smooches. Still I want to see more grab moves in Elden Ring like this and Sacred Flame see if you can make grappler build of some kind.

Maybe there could be a ’skewer’ skill for spear type weapons where you pierce through their chest, and can then toss them in any given direction as they’re stuck

I had the "can't grab anyone" thing happen to me when I was testing sacred flame pivot swaps a few months ago in a fight club. Everyone thought there must be a protection/ce script getting in the way but we all swore we had nothing turned on. Thanks From for inspiring deep seeded mistrust in a close friend group xD

9:56 I remember this exact thing happening to a friend in Dark Souls Remastered once. He just wasn't able to get a crit on me anymore. No backstab, no riposte, no grab. It was fixed by reloading though.

thats not the exact same thing then. Since in the video's case backstabs etc work fine it's just the dark hand/sacred flame that don't.

Imagine if there was an option to enable team damage in host's menu, so that he can actually use the dark hand to replenish his life at the cost of his phantoms? Would've had some neat uses... and hundreds of other not very neat uses, but still.

4:33 This happens when someone hits you right before you grap them and you don't get stagred, you have to have a high damge weapon in the other hand, I previously thought it could only be done with ceactus in the off hand but that doesn't seem to be true. And also it has somthing to do with latncy because no matter how hard I try I can not get it to work with NPC

Almost correct, it doesn’t have to do with damage but instead simply needs a weapon with the right crit hit values like multi hit ones. So caestus, zweihander, and hand axe would work but onyx blade wouldn’t. Also latency is needed so that you can be interrupted after you already sent the hit, and then pulled back into the animation which I’m guessing defaults to using the main hand values.

Oh shit! Hey Amir I remember seeing that "immune to grabs" glitch somewhere else! It was in some kind of challenge run, challenge run tutorial, or speedrun tutorial, in the likes of ymfah, and it involved a glitch where you became immune to backstabs and ripostes until some kind of flag was changed by doing something else Does anyone remember this???

@@Amir0 ok I think it was in dark souls 1 (don't know if og, remastered, or both) and I think it had to do with the grab cancel glitch (the one that makes iron golem skip possible). I'm still trying to find the original video, and I'm sure it wasn't an obscure one. It had a lot of details, it used the man serpent casters for a some portion of the video because they have an easy grab and can be backstabbed to show as example This is not the one but at least has some info on the grab cancel skip (at 16:40 or so): kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3nUiJ2KmKafjZI EDIT: I'm starting to think I'm misremembering some details, like who couldn't make a grab/crit after the glitch, you or the enemies. Yes it's weird I don't remember something like that but I still think is connected.

2:12 I think it was the chainmail on your someone's armor. If a character is wearing chainmail (be it the chain set, solaire's set, or any other armor with chain), if they quickly move their character, sometimes there will be the sound of links of chain knocking against each other. I think it's a neat touch.

Got an old clip way back of a dark hand grab on a laggy player. I got the heal but for some reason, they weren't damaged. Stopped using it after that

It's because they were hit with it when they entered i-frames. The same applies to ripostes and backstabs as well. You can actually roll a riposte or backstab if done perfectly or on bad connections. This has also carried forward into Elden Ring. I was losing my mind laughing during a 1v1 combat ordeal about 3 weeks ago where I somehow managed to roll my opponent's backstab on me 4 consecutive times in a row. Good connection too, so that wasn't the problem. I literally just did it by accident. You can also backstab each other at the same time and both either take damage or no damage depending on the circumstances. Another thing you can do is co-op a riposte or backstab with an ally, dealing both of your damage combined.

This is a really cool video and good explanation of backstab confirmation too. Interesting to see that the bs box is a cone then a distance check, it’s always felt like a trapezium to me, cool to see what it actually looks like. Dark hand also has some kinda funky damage modifiers that’d be interesting to see explained, when testing to put it on a build my first grab did 1500 damage and one-shot my test dummy with just sword ring buffing it. But every subsequent attempt did less damage and stacking warbanner and sword ring made it do less damage than just sword ring. Dark souls is weird, it’s great to have channels digging into how that weird works.

Another thing with the unable-to-grab glitch, I wonder if this is related to being immune from bs after a stagger. The bs grab immunity usually ends when the stagger victim moves but I wonder if the game sometimes fails to end that immunity but only checks to re-end it once a bs grab is initiated but forgot to put that re-check on grabs.

@@abookofmatches good point, I haven’t even checked if backstab immunity is processed on the backstabber or victims side or both so it is worth looking into. The damage I hear is a percent of max hp so it’s also with looking into.

14:59 Actually, I have tested this. If you have no FP while performing the weapon art, it deals reduced damage (25% less on the scaling part) and heals you for less as well (going from roughly 30% of your max HP, down to somewhere around 40-50 total HP). Mechanically it still works the same, but the numbers you get out of it are far less impressive.

9:52 love the Niro theme use here because I never knew a bug or glitch like that exist and honestly it's pretty terrifying as well I mostly use dark hand for dancer of the boreal valley for soul farming.

Unfortunately I am very familiar with Sacred Flame just randomly not working anymore. From my experience, it doesn't only happen to hosts, it can happen as a red as well. From what I remember, it does not even get fixed by reloading back to your world and getting summoned again. And don't quote me on this last one, but it also stops working for PvE, not only to players. I have a memory of me trying to grab a Drakeblood Knight and not being able to at all.

The Dark Hand is one of my BIGGEST frustrations in this game. It worked fine in DS1, where you'd usually only use it to steal humanity from certain NPCs, but it was janky even there.

Quick unrelated question: when you say “fast cancel weapon arts”, what do you mean? Like the Stance WAs that can cancel hitstun under certain conditions, or are you talking about weapons like Frayed or RKSS canceling the recovery of their own attacks? Or maybe WAs that have variable recovery depending on what you input next? What WAs have this “fast cancel” property? I appreciate any clarification, I’m v curious

Well there are 3 windows that weapon arts use to cancel. In SwordsArtParam, there is a value that determine which window a weapon art uses. 0 for left hand attack(Sellswords uses this), 1 for fast cancel(the window that usually starts early in the animation, quickstep, ringed Knight straight sword, frayed blade and many others use this), 2 for slow cancel(dark hand, shield parries, caestus, normal stance weapons and others).

i think it's to do with how early you can cancel another animation into the weaponart. it's why you can quickstep to dodge earlier than you could've rolled.

I discovered a weird thing that has no relations to dark hand grabs, but to backstab grab, and its similar to the detail you mentioned in 9:53. In champion's ashes mod (i say it because this may have to do something with that detail, i don't know) there is a player NPC damage test dummy at firelink and sometimes, after hitting him with a R1, i couldn't backstab him, no matter the angle, when i pressed R1 a normal R1 came out, not even a backstab attempt. I discovered that i only could back stab him when i changed my equipped wepons in some way, like 2H the wepon if it was 1H (or viceversa), equiping another weapon hardswaping it or softswaping it. I don't know what can do that because you can definetly hit someone and backstab him in seconds with no problem and oif the situation allows it (i think), and you can backstab someone multiple times (but i think i have heard that there is cooldown). I don't know if it has to do with the dark hand OR the grab attacks in general, but when you said in the video that "there is a hidden detail that makes the dark hand grab bad and just a few people know about it" and when you said this thing of "it sometimes doesn't work" i remembered this. Not sure if it happens after hitting someone with an R1 but i clearly remember not being able to backstab that NPC, could you test if you equip another weapon make you able to grab someone when its not working? @@alejandrobautistaperez2101 it might have to do with the mod's dummy, to be honest. I'd be careful drawing conclusions when using mods because you don't know how the mod programmed the dummy target. Try and replicate it on vanilla pve (use CE to lock their health if you need to)

This makes me think of a commenter somewhere else who was quite vehemently upset that they had 'Ruined PvP in Dark Souls Remaster'. While I didn't know quite as much then as I do now about some of the background improvements to hit box detection for backstabs, I feel it would've only strengthened my argument that he was Mad Cuz Bad and no longer able to exploit the mechanics as easily or get unfair matches.

10:45 So, i think it is bcs when you perform a backstab you make the "Range Check" active, my default it might be off with new players in your world as they are not reconized as enemies (NPCs), when you perform a backstab it forces the game to activate the Range Check to those players, often allowing to perform Dark Hand and Sacred Flame on them Just a guess, not for sure

The reason for the grabs not working sometimes could be that backstabs have a flag that activates the distance check collider while the grabs don't, this would also answer why it randomly stops working because maybe since the flag to activate the distance check collider hasn't showed up in a while it just deactivates the distance check collider to save on memory. This is just a theory of mine and I don't exactly know how I would check for this, but it would make some amount of sense if this were the case. The flags to activate and check for the distance check collider would have to be separate if this were correct.

As someone who's always thought the Dark Hand was cool from back in Dark Souls 1, I appreciate this insightful video on why it was so difficult to land throughout the series! The NPC Darkwraith knights had a far cooler animation, revving up then doing a swiping smack with the Dark Hand and slamming an opponent to the ground. The player version isn't unimpressive, but it lacks the oomph and most importantly the speed. Even offline against DS 1 NPCs, it was possible for you to parry them and them to roll away before that grab could land. Sometimes the game wanted some extra special arbitrary sweet spot in its small hitbox that was further complicated by DS 1's notorious, horrid lag and latency for PVP. Oddly enough, these pseudo whiffs would do a slight bit of damage, but nowhere near the damage a Dark Hand R1 would do. It's a shame that the DS 1 grab did no damage, making it not helpful for actually beating a foe a la the NPC's grab. This weakness could have been a strength for repeatedly grabbing players without killing them and thus making the most of the Humanity drain several times per fight (without being Rank 2 or 3 in the Darkwraith covenant). However, the development time getting slashed in half, alongside the likely worry of giving players a grab, didn't work out well. The grab wouldn't even go through shields in DS 1. That said, landing a grab that drained multiple Humanities at once was awesome, and it even added a bit to the lore by letting us gauge how much Humanity an NPC had. Sieglinde and Rhea appropriately had the most Humanity, with the latter possessing a whopping 12. I always liked the move, basically a False King Soulsucker that the players could do, but it took DS 3 and some patches to make the thing what it should have always been. I still love the shield though, coolest one in the games, and the punches are fun. Thank goodness for Black Flame to be like a viable Dark Hand grab too. Sorry for getting off track. Thanks again for the comprehensive video, including the close looks at the awesome Sacred Flame and the mechanics to those crucial yet oh-so-confusing backstabs!

10:00 Does the grab break anywhere or just in the vicinity of the Farron Keep? You mentioned the Dark Hand had a sound effect only loaded at the area and it would be a bit suspect if it only happened near the area. Maybe the wraiths override something.

3:06 so THAT'S how I'm grabbing people through rolls with sacred flame-- it's the same grab-box as a backstab. Edit: Wow though, this has shown me just how silly backstab-coding is implemented. Sure it's the most fair in the series, but it's still frustrating. As for the sacred flame/dark hand grab sometimes becoming unusable on opponents until a backstab attempt is made, I feel like this has to do with the bootleg network stability check. What other value/variable could it be checking for?

Vilhelm has tried to use this attack on me so many times. I didn't even know it was a grab until I saw someone else get hit by it on stream. Up until that point, I thought it was just a really strong punch.

I have no clue how ds3 is coded, but the backstab bug is obviously an issue with how grabs work in relation to backstab. it could be possible that grabs check for a "backstabbable" variable while backstabs only check hitboxes, but the backstab animation resets the variable.

Amazing stuff Amir. I'd love to hear your analysis on the thrusting swords and the '2nd chance' BS. FWIW this 2nd chance grab occurs even against the PVE. I got a pretty good clip of it when fighting one of the black knights. I'll include it in my response to this comment in case it gets blocked.

I hear it works a bit different in ds1, I think it only steals humanity and probably would only have a 1-side check. Also it can be parried lol

I would like to add my own experience to this as I always have a Dark Hand in my off-hand for that WA. I've found that there is a sweet spot that will work in the victims favour. I have several times been hit-stunned just as the grab lands, so my character jerks and then immediately goes into the grab/suck animation, the victim wont lose any HP, however I would still receive HP. Happens quite often as I try my luck with the Dark Hand often.

Shot in the dark on the fail grab: Sounds like a subroutine check failing to a default state it's not meant to be in. Likely it's a called function from the main grab check and sets a flag on the target that would be intended to prevent stacking grabs or strikes. It would make sense that the target becomes unable to be put in that same state with that same attack, but a different attack calling up that function resets the variable on the target. Not sure how deep the debug tools and such are on the game, or if you've already found the root cause. If your tools can read flags set on others, you might be able to find the flag at the very least that goes bad or gets a bad value in it.

id like to note, that the grab attacks break even in PVE. i did a Sacred Flame only run, and found that by mid-point High Wall, i couldnt grab anything. it would endlessly just do the half damage punch. thought my game was bugged, good to know thats its an actual problem with the game...

When I play with the milwood bow, I use this thing with it. I try to draw an arrow, and roll out as they try to hit me. After a few of those I pull out the dark hand on my left hand and use it and they almost always run at me and melee, and I tank the hit and give them the suck. Buy it also doesn't work out when the grab doesn't want to participate and it becomes a punch.

What if the host was strafing to your right but you lock off and turn yourself all the way around to the back, would you be able to land it or is the tracking that bad?

Do you know if certain attacks can "scrape" players off the ground? I was playing around with bad spells like Firestorm and the giant laser and noticed that I was able to hit my opponent while they were still knocked on the ground. I think I remember a similar thing with scythes. Is there an attack type that is able to hit knocked down players or is it just a delayed hitbox getting them as soon as they are able to get hit?

I feel like it's also worth mentioning that the dark hand grab is also worse than the sacred flame grab because when it's in the offhand, you know right away what someone is planning to do with it. it's like how having a parry shield out all the time makes people more wary of attacking blindly. With sacred flame, you can use plenty of other attacks without swapping offhands and it can be used as a mix up. When you see someone pull out a dark hand in their offhand, you know they're not going to use it as a shield. It's really obvious and no one is going to purposely leave themselves open for it since people know how deadly it can be and that it heals.

Use Smash tech, Captain Falcon pivot punch works for the Dark Hand grab. You can punish overaggression of a large group this way.

As for the mystery of the no-grab host, I know from Zullie's videos concerning certain animation states in DS1 that all actors with grab animations, including backstabs and ripostes, have a variable that checks if they're currently in the middle of performing one or being grabbed themselves, and if either of these are somehow true when they shouldn't be, you have to either die/reload/be backstabbed yourself to reset it. Something similar appears to be at play here; you can be rendered un-grab-able by mimics and etc. in this same game state.

it's why I play DS1 or Cinder instead. In ds1 is was a great parry plus nice shield, the weapon art should have stayed on the R2. The issues with the grab not landing is in both DS1 and DS3 but it's a damn fine shield and parry for the weight.

Cheat engine, we basically activate a flag that enables the hitbox viewer the developers used in development.

Btw one last thing, does the game check not only for distance, but if there's a wall inbetween the two players as well? Because I've been at the other side of one-pixel walls that allow me to get really close to other players, almost touch them, but grabs like Sacred Flame still never go through.

my theory when you miss a back stab it run a check and then recieves check true or false for the confirm back stab/Grab and the moment that is check no once on a back stab , it stays no until you rebackstab, hence why the hand just stops working all together. only a guess as to maybe help you figure this out, i have no idea how extensive you got with your testing

I remember I managed to hit someone who was invading me with sacred flame and they proceeded panic roll after losing 1/4 of their health bar. I suppose it was during a time when I was still new to the game and trying pyromancy spells and figured a grab attack was cool. The guy panics and uses estus from something not entirely bad. I could only guess they were as new to the game as me during the time

The back stab mechanic only works if both parties have literally perfect connection. I get ds1 backstabbed all the time in ds3. And i close ap when it happens cuz it well shouldn't have happened lol. So half what you said about the shitty backstab mechanic is right. They should scrap the ides if backstabs altogether

Amir, I might easily be wrong, on the 18 FP consumption trivia, I think there is one difference between enough FP and not enough/0 FP I think the healing from the grab is reduced if you don't have enough FP. Might just have been more DS3 weirdness! Thanks for the great video!
