I knew a bar tender that kept a bottle of "vodka" which was just water in a special spot behind the bar so the bartenders could do "shots" with the guests. Guests ofc got actual alcohol and the bartenders took a water shot

It's extremely rare a bartender told me they didn't know what a drink was, but every, single, time, the bartender asked what it was and what was in it, or simply went and looked it up. It's not rocket science. It's good customer service and a modicum of intelligence. These bartenders simply don't care.

So I used to work at a bowling center. I wasn't trained on bar, but I would make drinks a couple times when the bartender was sick and we were finding coverage or whatever. Do you know HOW MANY CUSTOMERS were more than happy to wait an extra few minutes after I put a smile on my face and said in a cheerful tone "Hey, I'm not a bartender, but I can definitely serve you, so give me a second to look it up and I'm happy to make it!" I've been to bars before where the bartender gave me a friendly "Ya know, I'm new, so I'm not sure the answer to your question, but let me check," or "Oh, it's my first night, so I have to check the book, but I can absolutely make that!" It's all about a friendly attitude. If you're doing your best, people are forgiving. And there's a difference between "not fully trained yet, but working on it and will definitely have the ropes in a couple weeks" and "just doesn't give a shit." Most of these bartenders just don't give a shit.

Yeah if a bartender asks me whats in it or says it will take a minute to look up and is polite about it I have zero problem with that. If they're rude and try to shame me for ordering something thats not a beer or shot then I just leave.

It's about humility, respect, and customer service. Honesty and being earnest will get you everywhere. There's a kratom/kava/hookah bar I frequent that just a few weeks ago revamped the menu, added new drinks, and got a few new people as they expanded the place. Some of the veterans still haven't learned the new menu by heart but they'll never turn anything down, will just look at what's in it and immediately go from there. I keep going back because the service is so good.

That annoyed the hell out of me, ofc if ur boss is making you do something you don't know how you're gonna be annoyed. Yes they're rude to customers but venting to other coworkers abt ur boss is so damn normal and it makes me really mad thats the very first thing he brought up.
