The lady who asked how to make a gimlet was treated horribly. You don't sit there and make fun of the bartender for not knowing how to make a specific drink. She was humble and asked if they could tell her how to make it and they just proceeded to giggle and mock her. I would've kicked them out.

@@nicolep.9212 yeah those girls were absolutely horrible and laughing in her face. I didn’t learn how to make a gimlet until I worked in a nicer bar where customers actually ordered that. She said in her many years bartending there no one ever ordered it so why would she know how to make it off the top of her head? Additionally she did the right thing: “I don’t know how to make that, can you help me? Or should I look it up?” And for them to laugh at her and say “how can you be a bartender and not know how to make a gimlet?” Total assholes. After leaving the dive bar scene I remember having a guy order a Grateful Dead, something I made all the time for a couple years. But after working in high end bars I had completely forgotten how to make it. It doesn’t make a stupid or inexperienced bartender or need mocking. There’s very few if any bars where they can make every and any drink.

I used to be Kitchen Manager at a pretty popular bar, and as soon as I took over, they didn't like me 😂. I insisted we take "fresh" off the menu for frozen mussels, cod and burgers. The GM argued the buger patties are hand made, not frozen... but the 10lb log of burger we made the patties from came in frozen because they were cheaper... they were a day away from expiring so the purveyor freezes them and discounts the price. And then we had bread pudding with Jameson whiskey sauce... that was made with McMasters brand whiskey. 🙄 But then, strangely, a bunch of stuff on the menu WAS fresh made daily, hand battered, made to order, etc. It was an odd combo of really good food, and false advertised dishes 😂.
@philbateman1989
@philbateman1989 3 жыл бұрын
Pro tip: If you're not sure how to make a particular cocktail, you don't need to make yourself look awkward and say "I don't know how to make that". Just ask "How do you like that?" 9 times out of 10 the customer will list off the ingredients and measures they like. If they ask for one you're *completely* stumped on, just say "could you talk me through that one? I want to make sure it's right". Then make a point of writing down the mix in front of them so if they ask for another, they can see you were proactive and noted down how to make it. It just shows you're making the effort to provide good service even if there are holes in your knowledge. Also, it's worth keeping a cocktail cheat sheet under the bar to help you. Then again, unlike the people in this video, you need to actually give a crap about good service lol You also should NOT be drinking on the job outside of very specific circumstances. If a customer wants to buy you a drink, put it in a ledger and have it outside of work hours. If it's an occasion like Christmas or New Years or whatever, then sure, have a drink with the customers to toast the occasion, but make it just ONE.

Back when I was doing it, we were allowed 2 drinks maximum, and they had to be out of sight of the customers. Only time I ever did more than that was 1 st Patrick's day. It was always a disaster, bunch of college kids that are using fake ID's, getting sloppy drunk, and no one tipping so staff is pissed off all night. Went on for like 2 months before some one called the cops and they came in to ID everyone. I was lucky enough to be there for it, kids scattered like deer. And if your boss is telling to drink while at work you should find a place of employment that has more respect for you. Just remember, next time you're drunk at work, TAKE A CAB HOME. when she got fired she took it better than the other one. She actually admitted that maybe she needed to get help and didn't blame the owners. The other lady who got fired made a big deal talking bout i guess we're not family. They did turn it around

One thing which really bugs me about some of the bartenders is that they keep flicking their hair around and then handling items behind the bar. Nobody appears to be hygienic.

I feel bad for some of these bartenders, because while some of these people just don't care, there are some intelligent, possibly skilled people who were just taught incorrectly or not taught at all. They're ignorant of how a bar is supposed to be run.
