I think most of the pictures are from early 2000s. That was around the time this was a trending topic. At least I first started seeing them pop up around 2004, a couple of pictures from this video I remember seeing back then on stumbleupon. It also usually turned out the owner of the room was heavily autistic and on the dole, so they likely were never able to afford to upgrade their computer.

Dude, with how I live, letting your room get dirty, or not getting out of bed in general is out of the question. That way, even though I have depression, I automatically get out of bed in the morning. Even if I dont have any plans. Even if to just eat breakfast and play on my games. And my room can get dusty and messy after a while, but since letting my room get dirty is basically against the law in my house, I eventually notice it and go on autopilot and clean it up. I MAKE myself do it. I dont care how I feel. I need to eat and drink to survive, so I get up to do so. My room needs to be clean to keep me feeling nice and fresh, so I MALE myself get up and clean. I don't care if I'm too tired or if I just don't nsee the point. Those thoughts are RETARDED and Im BETTER THAN THAT and ABOVE pathetic feelings like that. Those feelings are for WEAK PEOPLE and I'm not weak! (Sounds harsh and narcissistic, but it really helps you. Just remember to not actually think this. These thoughts are human and no one is above it. But if you convince your ego otherwise, then it really helps. Its the only reason im still alive and didn't just slit my throat at 11 years old)

You'd be amazed at the depths the how low someone's experience of life can go when their dopamine, serotonin and other neurotransmitters are low/unbalanced. Depression can make things like just going shopping or hell just getting out of bed seem incredibly difficult because you're just so fucking miserable. my room used to be like this. mountains of trash taller than me, piles of piss bottles hidden under dirty clothes, rotton and moldy food everywhere, brown recluse nests, places where the carpet wasnt exposed for years, the whole spiel. i was also incredibly depressed and hopeless. there were times where i literally didnt leave the house for months. i was dangerously underweight, i wouldnt shower or shave or brush my teeth for weeks, my whole diet only consisted of potato chips and ramen noodles. i spent all my money on weed and video games and generally didnt care about life. i burned all my relationships to the ground so i wouldnt have to leave my house and failed out of every class in school for 2 years straight. overall my lifestyle was complete dogshit. and no, this isnt some quarky form of self expression admitting all this because highschool depresson cool. i really lived like that and its way more common then you think. it wasnt something stupid either like bingewatching 13 reasons why and suddenly being depressed because i wanted a cringy poetic form of individuality.

My brother when he was going through a breakdown house looked a lot like some of these, he was truly at his lowest and its a result of mental illness that runs in our family. I used to be messy and couldn't move or have energy to care. If you struggle with cleaning your room, especially because of mental health issues of any kind, the best thing to do is to start simple. It’s overwhelming but focus instead on only putting away/cleaning/throwing away 7 things at a time. It doesn’t even matter if you can’t handle that much and have to do 2 things at a time, or that it’s only small pieces of trash. And, at least for me, doing that makes it easier over time- for example, I might be able to go from cleaning once a day to every few hours. Mix it up; focus on putting clothes away one day, purple things the next, that kind of thing. It doesn’t matter how long it takes, it only matters that you continue doing it. You can do it- coming from a person with clinical depression.

My ex boyfriend that I was with for 4 years had his room look very similar to this when I started dating him in highschool. Lot of depression and unaddressed issues when it came to mourning his lost loved ones. I remember him being embarrassed when I insisted on deep cleaning the room for him. Needless to say after a good 2 out of the 4 years he started to develop much more healthier habits. He is doing loads better but I still hope he is doing well and is being consistent with keeping his space clean. I think for individuals who end up with spaces like this they just need some support, and encouragement.
