I usually give books 100 pages. If it doesn't capture me by then, I figure it likely won't. That said, I only DNF'd 2 books last year and was based on being too busy. I will go back to both of them. I'm currently reading a book I could have DNF'd at 32% and again at 44% (really wanted to), but it's a book club pick.... so I'm sort of stuck.

This year I have DNF'd so many books. If I'm not feeling it, it's gotta go! I dnf'd the Inheritance Games, I would really want to read about the mystery but I'm DONE with all the unnecesairy romantic plotlines, especially when the girls has multiple boys to "choose" from. I'm not reading that any more, but I feel sad because I read it was a bit like Knives Out and I LOVE that movie.

My life as a mood reader has gotten so much nicer since I realized I can put a book back down without being a failure. Often I end up so liking those books when I go back to them in the right mood. Or I don't and I just don't care anymore

I like Lore Olympus personally, but I first read it in its original format😊 I think sometimes when webtoons are compiled into books it can make them feel disjointed or strangely paced🤷🏻‍♀️ Maybe you'll enjoy the other volumes better!

I agree with you about Four Auntie's and a Wedding, and right now I'm reading The Spanish Love Deception but I'm thinking of putting it down, because of the writing. The fact that every chapter feels like is recapping the chapter before and it's a like we get it.

I’m tempted to try Lore Olympics because I’m LOVING A Touch of Darkness/A Game of Fate and the whole Hades and Persephone story right now… but I’m worried it’ll be too confusing to read another retelling

I actually dnfed Four Aunties and a Wedding bc it felt too childish and the main character just frustrated me with her thoughts and feelings of absolute embarrassment towards her family.. can therefore totally understand why you were disappointed as I really enjoyed Dial A for Aunties as well!

My WORST WORST WORST book of this year and probably the last decade was 'Gone with the wind' . +1000 pages of pure torture. What an awful, racist book with an absolutely horrible, egocentric, naive protagonist. This was the vibe I had the whole time and it took me forever to finish this book. Next time I feel like this, I'm DNF'ing because I wasted WEEKS of my life. I also realised Classics aren't really for me. I tried many by now and I didn't like any :(.

My reading is much more productive and I tend to have better reading months/years (when in comes to enjoyment) when I'm DNFing books. Those books can always have a second chance at a later date! (If I'm really bummed out about putting it down.)

I agree about “Lore Olympus.” I actually think the art style is quite appealing, but nothing happens for so long that I just lost interest. Don’t get me wrong, I love a Hades and Persephone story, but Lord, this one took forever to get interesting!

I have Royal Holiday on my Christmas TBR so I am sad to hear you DNF'd this one. I also have The Inheritance Games books on my TBR and am excited to read it. In my experience with series, the second book is always a miss.

Hailey: I don't read a lot of sequels, i don't likt series. also Hailey: I didn't love Lore Olympus. I am going to read the other volumes because i have them i also was quite disappointed with Lore Olympus and i read it as a Webtoon, so that wasn't it. I just think it was a little overhyoed for me.

@@unavezms8167 idk, i didn't love the art style and i wasn't able to fully connect to it. It was fun, don't get me wrong. I had a very long busride and there i read 25 chapters (and i would probably have read more if my battery didn't die) but after that, i never felt any urge to pick it up again. I don't remember very well, 'cause it has been almost a year. I also learnt since then that i really don't like Hades and Persephone stories, so that was also a big part of it

I agree with you about Tommorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. I got it as my BOTM and kept hearing how amazing it was then I read it and it was fine. I like the premise and the characters but overall it was just okay. I felt like it was too long and we were told rather than shown 50% of the interesting parts of the book. Definitely the most disappointing book I read in 2022

I didn’t know Gabrielle Zevin wrote a new book. I read ‘Elsewhere’ years and years ago and I loved it. I read ‘Storied Life of AJ Fikry’ but it went on for too long and I started to lose interest.

I read Confess a few years ago and was also disappointed by it. It Ends With Us, Verity, and It Starts with Us are my fave CoHo’s. Confess felt far too unrealistic x10. I also was let down by Tomorrowx3. Elsewhere by Zevin is one of my favorite books of all time and I did enjoy Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac and AJ Fikry but this one, not so much. It was really long dragged out and uncomfy with that professor student stuff…

I completely agree with your thoughts on Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. It was fine, but I'm already forgetting what happened in it - it made like no impact on me. I don't understand the hype. I also agree with the second Four Aunties being overkill. I loved the first one, but the second one just felt forced and the ridiculousness of the aunties became annoying rather than funny.

Once upon a broken heart I thought was ok..... but I was ready and prepared for the series ending and then the SUPRISE! there will be a 3rd book at an unknown time just tainted it for me I think. I think if all along I thought it was a trilogy I would have thought it was an ok bridge book but I tend to read series once they all come out otherwise I lose interest so it kind of annoyed me.

The Hawthorne Legacy was super disappointing for me too, especially after the delight that is The Inheritance Games. It just felt unnecessary. I did brave through it and picked up The Final Gambit (Book 3) and surprisingly liked it even though the story was kinda sorta wrapped up by Book 2.

The art style of Lore Olympus gets SO MUCH BETTER througout the series. It's rather slow, but that's actually pretty normal for a longer webtoon series. Since the app is free, i would highly recommend reading a bit more and maybe you'll change your mind about it (or not :D)
