Its just that sometimes the brain has that little cricket-like thought "Aren't Custom Les Pauls pretty?" and yes, the utopical gorgeous ideal LP looks awesome, but it is almost hypothetical. I have never had a guitar that didn't go thru buyers remorse.

I’m a guitar teacher and I own several guitars. In my life all of my Gibson and Gibson-esque experiences have been 60s slim neck profiles. The other day one of my kids walked in with his new Epiphone 50s Les Paul and of course the rule is I get to play all the new guitars. I loved that chunky 50s neck so much I can’t stay off of Reverb right now.

Thanks Dylan for buying the SG Junior because I was on the fence about buying one for so long and after seeing how happy you were with yours, I finally pulled the trigger and got mine last October. Mine came out of the box perfect and set up to my liking. The main thing that surprised me when I unboxed it is that yours looks quite deep cherry red in your videos while mine has an orange tint to it like a vintage guitar that has faded over time. I put thumb bleeders and silver top knobs on mine just because I like that look. Cosmetically the only other thing I wish it had were 3-in-a-line tuners and it's possible that they would fit, but not without drilling new screw holes so that is not going to happen. In this video your SG had a nice smooth crunch to it that I preferred over the more twangy sound of the DC. I'm glad you kept your SG because seller's remorse can be a lot worse than buyer's remorse and it can haunt you.👻

Dylan, you have effectively a shootout here between your Gibson and the handmade Jr DC as they sound different with the same pickup, but the question becomes why. It looks like a very solid amateur build. Could be wired with different pots and capacitors, could be the way the intonating wrap bridge affects the tone over the lightning bar, could be the overall mass difference, etc. Another fun shootout would be to put the Gibson pickup back in the Jr and and also the DC. You have just removed a nail from the coffin of the Tonewood debate.

I have a few Gibson 2014 models, that was the first year I was able to afford one. 27 years after I began playing guitar. Took a while. I love them. My first Marshall head also took about 29 years. I think that since our bodies are 98 degrees and the instruments are around 76 degrees, they warm up and the necks ease tension and bow slightly, the strings warm up and soften a bit and they change pitch a little bit. My Les Paul is #2 for stability. It has a large round 50’s neck. The #1 most stable guitar is Ibanez Universe Vai limited edition. It basically never goes out, ever. But it’s normal for the rest of them to warm up as I sit with them. These days I play in short bursts, there is no way for my hands to go hours without going numb. Gives me time to think.

I bought a 2004 melody maker earlier this year randomly on a lark while at a used guitar store in Toronto. I'd never even seen it before. It's basically a Les Paul Jr with no pick guard and a tune-o-matic bridge. Before that, I'd never played a Gibson that I loved. I was starting to move towards bridge pickup only guitars with a super cheap Squire Esquire I bought (swapped the pick-ups for a SD Invaders). But after having the Melody Maker with the P90... I'm like... I don't think I need neck pickups for my playing style AT ALL. I hardly touch my other guitars. P90s for life now. Who ever had it before me put Grovers on it and 14 gauge strings. At first I thought who the fuck plays with 14, but man...slamming power chords on it. It's just so fun. I may go down to 12s, but I'm gonna keep the whole thing just a meaty rock machine.

I just checked the Gibson website, looks like the SG Junior is still available for sale? Are they planning to discontinue? Also cool to see it sounds different from the DC LP Jr custom build. I have an LP Jr. and SG special and always wondered if it was redundant to have both. You’ve helped me justify keeping both in my stable now. 😁 P.s. Agree on not getting hung up on certain neck specs. All my guitars differ in feel and the variety is nice. Doesn’t take too long to adjust to then when I’m switching either.

As a proud owner of a 59 LP Junior double cut and 16 years of guitar experience I can say single pup gibsons (vintage or not) are rock machines Pure rock tone and simple controls Also when youown a single pup guitar you will learn how to use volume and tone And about the bridgeand intonations it's fine not 100% in tune always but its gets the job done Its like owning one of those old shelby cobras! I understand not wanting an ugly bridge, but the Schaller Signum is an intonation adjustable wrap bridge/tailpiece but also purdy. If you look up Schaller's youtube video on installing a Signum, they install one on a Vintage Guitars version of your SG. So you can see how it would look on yours.

I’ve had a Gibson LP studio for about 18 years, with a thin satin nitro finish. Doesn’t show much wear despite a lot of playing; you can definitely tell I’ve played it but the finish hasn’t worn like I expected it would when I bought the guitar. I would think that a gloss finish would take quite a bit more abuse, but maybe thicker is more prone to wear? My guitar is the same, with regards to tuning. Some days it stays in tune, and will still be in tune the next day. Other days it won’t stay in tune and I can’t figure out why!

OK, so I have a 2015 or so SG Junior built by Precision Guitars in Vancover BC. It has a Lollar P90 and Tone Pros bridge. And it has an ebony fretboard. It's my favorite guitar. I also have a 2018 Gibson Banner Series SG Junior. It has the same Tone Pros bridge from the factory. Not a Lightning Bar. My second favorite guitar. I have 13 SGs and 7 LPs. Many of them are Customs and Supremes or some variation on those themes. All high end Gibsons. These Juniors are nowhere near the worst. They are actually the best. Juniors will challenge you like no others. You don't have much to work with so you have to make the best of it. Another favorite of mine is a Single P90 Epiphone Jared James Nichols LP Custom Gold Glory. Less is more.

Unless Gibson altered the compensated bridge. If they left it vintagey. Then you're never going to really get it intonated...mostly. because when they finally decided to add a "compensated" bridge/tail piece, they were compensating it for a wound 3rd string, and heavier strings in general. Add to that, there isn't a lot of body for the neck to bite into, and you'll have tuning issues that won't improve with age. ...but that's perfectly ok... Those guitars are best played balls-to-the-wall, as hard as you can. Where things like intonation don't really matter much, and if you're a little out of tune, it somehow sounds better. Just try to resist the urge to use the neck like a whammy bar...maybe a little.

Are not the tuners mainly responsible for tuning?
@ravenslaves
@ravenslaves 2 ай бұрын
@@ChrisShortyAllen tuning isn't the same thing as intonation or tuning stability, which was where I was going with the neck/body. Intonation simply means that the guitar is in tune with itself. So that your open A, will still be the same note when you play the octave A, and not be sharp or flat, for example. Because your guitar will experience physical changes from time to time, it's important to be able to make those small adjustments to your intonation.

I never knew the horns weren’t symmetrical until a couple years ago, but I wonder if subconsciously that’s what made me think they were ugly? They say people decide a person’s attractive or not by looking for facial symmetry or at least that’s how a first impression or a slide of different peoples faces they found that people deemed the people whose faces were more symmetrical as being more attractive.

DYLAN, 50's and 60's pickups didn't use TAPE around the pole pieces and bobbin which the tape changes the tone of the pickups. Why the tape changes the tone of the pickups is because you get coupling of the pole pieces to the enamel wire which has resistance and causes leakage so each pole piece will have a different leakage with the wrapped wire. Stop using tape around the bobbin and go direct, plus fender would spray a coating on the pole pieces magnetics to try to prevention oxidation. Thank God you didn't say something stupid like "tone wood" made the difference in sound. The pickup placement makes a huge tonal difference. The wood, not so much. 😎

@@DylanTalksTone I can believe that way more than tone wood. FFS people believe that mess so much I've seen it cause fights between close friends many times. It's sad. James Lill put that rumor to rest a while back but nobody will believe their ears.

These guitars are just plug in and play...none of that spending 20 minutes of getting the right 'tone'

For me, one pickup guitars are virtually useless. Neck pickups are great for blues and jazz.
