Usually "cast members" are either young college students who just need a little extra cash and think it sounds like a fun job, or they're aspiring actors who were told it would be a step up in their career (it's not). Either way, Disney is kind of predatory as far as their hiring practices.

In a way this reminds me a lot of sports mascots, especially those who work College games. My College mascot is just a guy in football pads, a bare bones uniform and a gigantic felt/foam "Wildcat" head. There is nothing else to the costume, and prospective mascots have to be able to do rapid fire pushups on a wooden plank held up by Cheerleaders for each point scored during Football games. I've seen people throw full drink cups and such at him while he does this, usually those supporting the opposing team. If someone ever asked me if I ever wanted a job like that, even if I was offered double my current pay rate, my answer would be: "Fuck off. I'd rather be living next to the dumpster at Arby's."

when it comes to the Tigger, i genuinely don’t think he knew how the kid was reacting. When your in suits like that you can only usually see directly in front of you and not below you so it’s hard to gauge how a kid is responding to you. It weirdly goes both ways. When my sister was little, a Mickey Mouse mascot groped her while we were all taking a photo together. She was a kid, so it just shut down her brain to realize that Mickey would do that to her. None of us knew for years. Disneys is bad a place ..

When I was like 5 we went to Disney land. And while I was enjoying my possibly 20 dollar bowl of Mac and cheese from a restaurant, the Minnie actor came up to the table and basically rubbed my entire body until she found my face and just hugged me. I never went back to Disney land.

7:59 they have an actual phrase for it like "preserving the magic" and you're not really meant to break immersion under any circumstances. I'm literally citing my source as reddit comments but if they're to be believed, people in the mascot costumes have been known to vomit in their helmet/pass out due to dehydration and heat exhaustion, and they're expected to somehow stay in character (kinda like the ceremonial guards at Buckingham palace). There's also allegedly a sort of Disney gestapo who move around through all the employee-only corridors (many underground) that connect to certain hidden exits around the park so they can just kinda grab someone who's causing a scene and deal with it out of sight.

I hear they stopped doing “Andy’s coming” because they’d drop and shit would break off. Now seeing some of those examples I think maybe it was how mentally broken the person in the costume became. Also they finally updated the Toy Story costumes after all these years, they don’t look like shit anymore.

I doubt they cared about the mental health of their employees... I would bet money that that wasn't a factor lol it was probably mainly for legal/financial reasons. Prevention of WC claims, guest injury lawsuits, and embarrassing videos of their masks falling off

There’s a Mongolian grill called HuHot where they cook the food in front of you on a huge flat top circle grill, and if you tip there’s a gong right next to it and you can bang it and the cooks have to collectively yell “HU HOT!” as they’re already in a dinner rush. I wanna steal that goddamn gong just so that midwestern families no longer have the power to make low wage food workers play dance monkey dance.

What's overlooked is the audition process to be a character performer at a disney park. I went to an audition yesterday in Austin texas and the amount of people who flew from different sates to attend the audition just to get cut after 10 minutes is insane. Disney acts like getting to be a performer in a very special role and only the best of the best can get in, but once you get the job you're really just waving to people in a heavy and hot costume in extreme weather conditions. Just another way Disney tricks people and makes labor seem so magical

One of cousins did about a year or so of both character and suit work at Disney World. During the summer nobody wanted to be in those suits. Character work is pretty rough too. Princess Jasmine's wig weighed around 20 pounds and, due to the rigs designed to keep the actor from suffering spinal damage, made it next to impossible to turn your head. There were so many rules for behavior that made it seem like you were under constant scrutiny.
