Honestly the only Disney adults I can stand are the ones that actually review the theme parks and give advice on how to navigate them/what’s worth spending your money on. It sounds absolutely crazy to say, but as someone who has been to Disney (both in Florida and California) many times, Disney outright refuses to make their park experience easy on the average guest. Being an adult with a video camera at Disneyland is only not cringe when you’re doing it to help people not have a mental breakdown over trying to comprehend the convoluted way Disney runs their parks. ESPECIALLY in the post covid era, in which Disney had decided they care about making money and not sense.

They all seemed to be facing a woman who appeared to be restocking one of the shelves. I asked someone in line what they were waiting for, because it seemed important, and like 10 of them yelled “HALLOWEEN STUFF!!!” And I tried not to do it, but the urge to audibly laugh out loud and shake my head in disbelief was involuntary. I just couldn’t help it. They were chomping at the bit to get first crack at Disney Halloween stuff. Like, they probably formulated explicit and highly orchestrated plans for being at that exact store at that exact moment in time to face that exact shelving unit to purchase Disney Halloween items. Just think about that.

theres another wrinkle to the disney adult phenomenon in that they get overly critical of disney since they have their whole sense of identity and happiness invested in it so they expect them to be miracle workers 24/7. They meltdown over things out of their control like random food a kid dropped, and it takes a while for a cast member to see/clean or some peeling paint. When your a kid you would filter petty shit like that out cuz you were taking the park in. Familiarity breeds contempt and disney adults are often the most contempt.
@touch_me. Жыл бұрын
“familiarity breeds contempt” while that’s true most of the time, there are plenty of people who are perfectly happy doing the same things on repeat because they find new ways to experience that same thing… it’s kinda like playing a video game: if you play the same game the exact same way over and over again it can get boring, BUT there are always more than 1 way to play a game: you could set restrictions/challenges/speedruns for yourself, you could try taking a different path to the same ending, you could seek out a different ending entirely, you could attempt to obtain every collectible, you could play on different difficulty settings, you could use mods, etc… while familiarity *can* breed contempt, you can always make things interesting through trying new things… if you’re in a relationship you can travel around the world and go on plenty of romantic dates to keep things interesting, if you have a job you can volunteer to participate in new projects to keep yourself challenged, if you’re living in a city you can go to new buildings/facilities/businesses around the city to experience new aspects of your city, etc… oh, also, don’t try and do everything all at once: it’s much wiser to take things slow, and do one thing at a time because *that* is how you keep yourself from getting burned out too quickly… when watching a show you should only watch a handful of episodes a day, rather than binging an entire season every day; when dating someone you should dedicate each date to a different activity, rather than doing too many activities in one date… take your time in life: allow your life to span across several years, rather than trying to condense your life into the span of a single week
@RudolphTheRedNosedFox Жыл бұрын
@@touch_me. that is a valid point you brought up. Though I would argue it's not always a 1 to 1 comparison. With your average guest who visits Disney Land, that does make sense. But these hardcore Disney Adults take the smallest of inconveniences way too seriously, because they *expect* the park to operate exactly how *they* want it to operate. It would be like playing Super Mario Brothers for the 50th time, and then, out of no where, you hear Mario screaming at the top of his lungs because the ground was too dirty.

Dude, I took my daughter to Disney California back in June. It was a fucking nightmare. She hated it and I hated it. Mainly due to how long lines were and I hated how expensive everything was. Way too crowded. By the middle of day two, she just wanted to spend the rest of the vacation at the hotel pool. She’s 8 so she’s the prime age for someone to love Disney but she was just bored the entire time. I don’t know how an adult could love that place, I’m 37 and was looking forward to it but once I was there reality hit me in the face. Place sucks. Maybe Disney World is different.

Same experience with my daughter this past spring. We ended up staying at the hotel pool and last day even going to the beach instead . Disneyland CA is god awful , not what I remember when I was a kid. Only reason we got on any rides was cause I paid the fast passes ,which I only did cause I figured I spent 900$ on passes we might as well ride something.
@jasoninthehood9726 Жыл бұрын
@@Boggrott I didn’t even think about the fast pass. My kid didn’t even want any pictures with any of the characters or autographs for her autograph book. Other than swimming, the only thing she enjoyed the entire time was the Princess makeover thing and buying an expensive crown. She also had more fun taking her first ride on a plane to get there than any of the rides there. I went when in 1996 so it’s shocking how short the rides are in comparison to the length of the line as an adult. I did notice a lot of those older Disney adult fans this video talks about it and it was just bizarre to me. I also noticed my kid and my sister’s kids aren’t even really into Disney stuff like kids were when I grew up…people can shit on KZbin all they want but the current generation of kids love it. I think they would have been way more excited seeing a KZbinr they watch than they would Mickey Mouse or Cinderella. I went to Universal studios for the first time in my life when I was 21 with a friend who was 20. We are both from Ukraine and we’ve never seen anything like this, we’ve never been to an amusement park of this caliber . Anyway, we were soooo excited! We looked like we were having a fever 😅 laughing and pointing at everything in amusement. I felt like a child again and it was unbelievable. I didn’t care if we looked cringey , you guys probably don’t realize how unbelievable your amusement parks are for someone from abroad. It was the best day of my life and I am so happy I wasn’t spoiled with attending other parks prior to this .

I understand having Disney nostalgia as an adult. For many going there as a kid was one of the highlights of their lives, i know for me it was. It was like nothing else on earth. That said, it is cringey when adults go beyond basic visits to the parks and collecting disney memorabilia and start putting a huge emotional investment in it. It reminds me of child pageants, cringey ass parents being way more into something than the kids.
@JeffreyThrash Жыл бұрын
Yeah, if you were the perfect age (extremely young) when movies like Aladdin or Lion King came out (the originals, not the poopy remakes), you tend to develop a strong attachment to those defining early moviegoing experiences that other generations don’t get to enjoy. Unfortunately, being a millennial who grew up in the so-called “90’s Disney Renaissance” seems to also drastically increase your risk factor of becoming a “Disney adult,” and in that sense I actually envy today’s children growing up with a healthy skepticism of the corporation due to the…inconsistency of their recent output under Igor, Chapek, and then Iger again,.

As a millennial that can't afford anything..-and who grew up poor listening to other kids talking about going to Disney.. I do understand the certain percentage of adults like me who might get to eventually afford going for the first time, and just being excited about finally going and experiencing it all. I've been to SIx Flags in Georgia and Carowinds, but it doesn't seem like either hold a candle to the immense offerings at Disney. It would be an overload for sure. I've heard other KZbinrs and a whole lot of Boomers saying people in their 30s and such shouldn't even be there unless they have kids. Just let people enjoy things, holy hell. Life is depressing enough as it is. (*NOTE* that's not a jab at Papa Meat specifically. Only at the idiotic gatekeepers against fun.)

I’m no Disney adult but as an observer, I can easily break things down into simple terms. There is a fine line between an adult who enjoys going to Disney and a Disney ™️ Adult. An adult that enjoys going to Disney is just one that literally goes, walks around, get on rides, regretfully pay for food, take like 4-5 minutes to look at the main street parade before leaving the park. Now a Disney ™️ Adult will pin point every single detail down to goofies flyer that somehow has a hidden Mickey engraved

My mother is a Disney adult. She doesn't dress up or anything like that, but Disney influences pretty much every aspect of her life. She has all the movies, lots of statues and stuffed animals, her purse is Pinocchio themed (Jiminy Cricket is her favorite character), and we've been to Disney World almost a dozen times. As a kid, it was cool to get to go to Disney World quite a few times, but as an young adult I started to think it was a little weird. As an adult, I got a better understanding of what was going on. As a kid, my mother and her siblings were terribly abused by her mother, both physically and psychologically. Watching the "World of Color" and "Wonderful World of Disney" gave her a temporary escape from that life. As she grew up, Disney became that "safe space" she could turn to. To me, using Disney as a safe space is no different than someone using alcohol and drugs as a coping mechanism for their lives. You are using something fake to temporarily distract you from your fucked up reality. I get this vid was meant to be funny, and this guy in the vid was pretty cringe to be honest, but just thought I would post this up for people to read. As for going to Disney World, I highly recommend it, even if you aren't a Disney nut. We have a time share down there now, and you don't have to do the parks if you don't want to. There are bits of Disney everywhere, but there are plenty of things for adults to do beyond rides. The restaurants are almost all fantastic. The mid to high end resorts are all top class. The lower end ones are all kind of kitsch in my opinion. I was pretty bummed out when they took out the animation stuff at the back of Hollywood studios as there were plenty of reproductions of classic art you could look at up close. I spent hours looking at the background plates and sketches from the really early films and cartoons. There were quite a few easter eggs there. Beyond the core Disney stuff (Mickey Donald etc) they've also got Jim Henson stuff, Star Wars, Indiana Jones etc. Epcot's backend is called "World Showcase" and walking through it is like doing a mini world tour. All of the nations are staffed by people from those countries, and have food from those countries as well. It's probably one of my favorite parts because I love food. One of my favorite trips was staying in the 3 bedroom grand villa at Animal Kingdom lodge. Getting to spend every morning and every sunset on the balcony sketching and watching the African safari animals just chillin was an amazing experience.

Super interesting hearing a more postive experience. I am not at all a Disney fan but interesting to hear a better one. Epcot sounds like a lot of fun honestly.

So… are we just supposed to relish our fucked up reality, and not have any coping mechanisms or escapism? Especially at that young of an age? That’s how people come to the conclusion that inflicting self-harm is a way out, or at worst, commit suicide. Sure, alcoholism or drugs as a coping mechanism is unhealthy and creates more self-destruction, but something like Disney is far more of a healthier option. I’m not knocking you for what you said, but I’m just curious about what people who experience realities like that are supposed to do in your eyes. Especially when they’re young and grow up with it, when someone who is supposed to be an attachment figure or security for them (a parent) is the cause of it. Abuse and trauma are real things, and they require some sort of coping mechanism or escapism to survive them. We’re humans.

Yeah my wife kind of became a Disney adult after the birth of our two kids- in many ways I followed along. She actually used to work for the company and was in animation out of college. I just think it’s the way she coped with all the stress and keeping in touch with her past vocation. I took her to Disney World without the kids because I knew it would be a long time until we traveled and it was to make up for our honeymoon that was canceled due to COVID. Absolutely amazing trip- they’ve really invested in their dining too so the food was amazing. Very expensive though to eat at the top spots. Actually taking my kids to Disneyland in a couple weeks but we’ll be done for awhile. Can only take so much as fun as it’s been.
