The casting with Luthor is amazing if you look at what he wanted to do with the character instead of what you expected. His Luthor is meant to be the new age of billionaire/influencer/rich villain. Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Andrew Tate. That kind of thing. He was great at that type of Lex.

There's a reason why Lex Luthor is so popular and it's not because of this type of persona they portray in the movie. Even Jon Cryer who is about the same size and had the potential to be just as stupid managed to do a much better job. Clancy Brown and Michael Rosenbaum are the definitive portrayals of this character.

The absolute most hilarious thing I can think of in regards to the DCEU IS this: In the comics Lex Luthor is this calculating intimidating intelligent bald badass. When he enters the room you know he’s the boss. And on the other spectrum. In the comics Dr Sivana is a nerdy little weirdo who is basically evil because nobody respects him and he’s an outcast of society. The DCEU did a complete flip of both these characters. Imagine Mark Strongs Dr Sivana as The DCEU’s Luthor?

My guess is to why he was changed is due to Zach Snyder’s personal philosophy. In a lot of his movies the emphasis is almost this Radian ideal of strong men doing things on their own while the world hates them for their greatness. Which pretty much describes Lex Luthor to a “T”. So he makes Lex the opposite all the while making Superman take himself overly seriously. Snyder would read the hero as the villain and vice versa.

Totally agree, but I will say in 2013-2014 whenever they announced him, I was excited for Eisenberg to be Lex, because I assumed they were going for the Mark Zuckerberg/Elon Musk route. Then he just ended up being the Joker/Riddler. The real life Zuckerberg is way more intimidating. My dream pick was always the Oscar Isaac we got in Ex Machina, bald charming sociopathic billionaire that isn't exactly wrong. Batfleck's reasoning for wanting to kill Superman is what Lex's should've been. Zod and Superman should have caused the death of one of Lex's employees causing him to take Zod's body and make Doomsday or Bizarro. They just jumped too far into trying to make a universe, Batman stole Lex's spotlight as the rationalist villain

But when the film was being promoted and showed off Jessie Eisenberg's bald Lex Luthor on a black and white Time Magazine cover, I thought looked convincing enough that I was sold on the idea. Then the movie came out, and I liked everything... Minus Doomsday and Lex.

Concerning castings can sometimes reveal some great surprises, I remember being very worried when Jon Cryer was announced as the Arrowverse Lex Luthor, and he ended up being fantastic in *Supergirl* season 4&5 (he was sadly overused in season 6 in which he was just the real Big Bad's simp). Between Supergirl, Titans and Superman & Lois, we got lucky when it comes to live action Lex Luthors recently. It kinda makes up for the DCEU one being a failure... even if, for some weird reason, I kinda like Jessie in BvS & JL, both the Whedon & the Snyder cuts...

Jessie was originally brought in to read for Jimmy Olsen, With Zack and his Wife Deborah doing a private character read for him. The Idea was the same for Jimmy, having a big actor play him then kill him off in the beginning to subvert audance expectations. According to Zack When Jessie came in he was unfamiliar with the characters and disinterested in the comic book world but interested in doing the gimmick that Zack had in mind. However, the way Jessie Spoke in a cold intelligent and disinterred way changed Zack's mind. After Jessie Left Zack and Deborah got the idea that he would be a better Lex Luther than Jimmy Olsen, because of his personality. Zack then directed Jessie to be the exact opposite of the personality he originally liked to have a slow build in to the Lex Luther of the Comics, It's the same method he was trying to do with Superman. He wanted a multi-movie arc for character development. I don't really like Jessie as Lex, but I don't completely dislike his performance and thought there was potential for a great Lex Luther from Jessie, especially if directed by a director who actually wanted to see that. I do believe that Jessie Eisenberg could be a great Lex Luther just not in this movie. (Which I think was the point, he wasn't supposed to be classic Lex, he was supposed to become classic Lex.) Watching Lex trip over his words and make an ass of himself is annoying, but realistic (I think) if compared to the actual out of touch and socially awkward billionaires like Elon Musk. Who I think Zack was trying to emulate, that Jolly rancher Scene however is as cringy as it is fascinating to watch. I don't think it's a good scene, just interesting to watch.

Luthor never had a suck ass toady at his side, he never wore a fucking WIG, and he was NEVER comic relief... except in the Donner films. I would rather see an annoying, bratty, younger version of a serious Lex Luthor played by Eisenberg than that damned Hackman version. I would enjoy Cranston as Luthor, though.

My only Lex Luther knowledge only came from Superman The Animated Series. So I don’t have the greatest awareness of how the character should be. Had no idea if Snyder’s version is meant to be wholly different or anywhere from the comics. To my understanding it’s unlike any Lex we ever had, and I never took him seriously because he was a literal clown. But Zack Snyder’s directing in general never resonated with me.

He does seem to be going for a Heath Ledger joker feel. Which doesn't work at all for Lex. Lex Luthor is the exact opposite of Joker. He's infact much more like Batman. If he was bad. I kind of like this performance though. I don't like Jared Leto's Joker. I really kind of like this performance better.

I do not agree. Too me Kevin Spacey was the worst Lex. And not because of all the news about him… not at all. But the movie just remaked the first movies and Kevin did not manage to embody this more campy version of Lex as good as Gene Hackman did. This version of Lex that Infuso seems to dislike so much was a new take on Lex to make him more similar to tech moguls. He is extremely smart and in control. Maybe one could have an opinion about superficial things but that too me just seems like he do not want to show his cards. This may not be Lex in the comics but who the hell cares. Lex could be an extremely booring character as well, so just make him arrogant and intelligent and power hungry. Well it is hardly unique.

People can hate on bro but he was a refreshing take on the character. His speech "black and blue" was great. His eccentric speech pattern made him feel volatile. Pros and cons sure but sometimes we should appreciate that this movie was hype for many reasons.

Lets be real here. Zack synder has always changed things from the source material because he thinks its cool not too serve the plot. This goes back too dawn of the dead, the original director hated his version because he changed it from slow moving zombies too running zombies. And he said " i made them slow because even their back from the dead rigamortis is still happening, plus them moving fast defeats the purpose"

He made batman the punisher, he mentioned hope in superman but his movies all but hopeful. This was gen Z and gen A first time seeing alot of these characters live action(most of gen z was toddlers during superman returns and their first batman is christian bale) you gotta give us the accurate character first then down the line do some deconstruction

I see that Eisenberg's casting and performance as Lex Luthor both show one big, glaring issue: non-canon! There's also the offensive Ambiguously Autistic/Syndrome stereotype. Snyder's Younger and Hipper tech billionaire version of a classic DC supervillain is too wimpy for action movies and worsens the anti-intellectual stereotypes of Evil Genius and Mad Scientist that Luthor is based on. He also has insufficient character motivation for a Superman-hating supervillain, even with narcissism, because the Dark Age and Modern Age media versions of Lex are white-collar criminals and Corrupt politicians. This movie version made this problem more obvious! Ego and money are insufficient reasons to blow $ 1 billion/month trying to kill an invulnerable and friendly space god who repeatedly saves Earth. Darkseid, Doomsday, and the Parasite are more suitable archenemies for Superman because the former is an alien space tyrant out to conquer the universe including Earth his home, and the second is a genetically engineered super-soldier bred to kill Kryptonians. The latter is a psychic vampire after his powers.
