For me I played Mario Sunshine when I was 5. It was my first 3D Mario game, and one of my first console games in general. I loved the colorfulness and the summer vibes. I would make my own fun like spending hours exploring Pianta Village, aggro-ing the chain chomps in the lava and then running away, or just listening to the band playing music. So I can’t really compare it to other games. Even as a kid I knew that Yoshi stuff was bullshit though lol

I first played it 13 years after launch, and it is my favorite Mario game. No nostalgia here. The movement is the best in the series, that is the sole reason I love it so much. It's just so SMOOTH

Came in excited for a gamescast- got Andy disparaging one of my favorite games of all time 😭 Having played Galaxy & Sunshine again, back to back when all stars came out, I still prefer Sunshine. There are dated aspects in Sunshine (mission structure, ugh) but the vibes and music are immaculate and it’s still mechanically awesome to play. Controls better than 64. I think Sunshine has more flaws if you’re trying to 100% though- Galaxy is a better experience there. It’s very different but it’s still so good, partially for that reason- I wish it was more universally enjoyed 😓

Me and Andy clearly played very different games. I didn’t have any of these issues when I played and I was a teen when I played sunshine the first time. It’s like parts of the game that are fine somehow fucked Andy up, or he’s just really unlucky, or straight up bad. I never had any trouble with any Yoshi stuff?? I remember having trouble with the challenge levels that took away your water, those were frustrating. But they were supposed to be hard. I *did* play the GC version though, not the modern ports. If the ports broke stuff, that’s def on Nintendo, and shame on them. In which case, my first sentence is true: I guess they are different games after all.

I absolutely love Sunshine, and have played it through multiple times on the Gamecube version, as well as emulated. I never played through the Mario All Stars version though, so I might have to see if it is actually that bad. I will say I don't remember that Shine Sprite being that difficult, but there is definitely some jank about it and it does seem punishing if you mess up. I look at Mario 64 in a similar way, as I still love that game, but playing the N64 version of that game can be super annoying at some points. I do get a lot of the points made though. Especially when people complain about some of the other sprites. I just never really viewed most of them negatively, and tried to figure out what I was doing wrong or what I might be missing.

I whole heartedly agree with Andy about sunshine. It pains me to say it..but the game is kinda shit. The jumping does not work on the emulated version on switch it was so frustrating. I got to the first boss played 2 more levels, and I just couldn't do it anymore. This game is very much shielded with nolstalgia and maybe a bit of the Nintendo bump. It's not good.

I am not here to defend Mario Sunshine, as I have never played it, but in watching Andy's playthrough he seems to have a negative IQ when it comes to understanding Nintendo game language. The game isn't doing itself any great favors by any means but at every opportunity possible Andy will do the wrong thing. I see that this could be levied as a negative to Nintendo for not making it clear enough, but any more and they would be playing the game for you. Just as a small example if there is a ramp leading from a lower level to an upper level instead of taking it Andy will instead opt to try a triple jump into a side flip off a random wall that happens to have a random geometry that isn't intended for Mario to jump off of but Andy discovered you could so he continues to attempt this 100 times in a row instead of taking the ramp. Again I get that this is perhaps partially done for comedic value on his part but my god is it frustrating to see someone miss out entirely on what "should" be done and then proceed to dump on the game design haha.

"Terrible videogame" is insane to me. I know games are generally better nowadays but back when it released it got a 92 on metacritic. It has real problems for sure but there's so much joy to be had in mario sunshine and the music is great too. This is a great discussion. I respect the souls games but could never fully commit to them because ive always found the combat lacking, especially when i compare them to nioh. I think with nioh its the range in its customization. I can go for a build that does the 1-hit KOs to having a build where it feels like im playing devil may cry or ninja gaiden. If you were to tell me i can do that in a souls game id give them another go. Elden ring is in the same boat. I respect it for what it is, but can never fully commit to it either. Many people consider Lud and Zallen to be one of the worst boss fights in the Dark Souls series. for what its worth lol. But I agree with Mike that I think I prefer Dark Souls 2 to 1 at this point. Dark Souls 2 walked so Elden Ring could run.

The problem with Nintendo in this era is that they decided they would focus on setting deadlines to make sure consistent release schedules and games like this came out with low polish. Wind waker dungeons are also very meh cos of this and I sometimes think they made it look like a cartoon to steer the conversation to graphics cos it couldn’t win on gameplay. The other fallout of Sunshine is Nintendo set the standard and cos of that SEGA saw and were like “I guess this is what video games have become now and we will have to do it like this” and thus Sonic 06 was spawned in response to match (I at least was able to power thru sonic 06 and never hit credits on sunshine. The later levels are enjoyable cos somehow it’s the first half of Sonic’s story that is the worst when usually devs will make sure the start works lol) But yeah the best part of Sunshine is the Lets plays. All the “its Nintendo, I am sure ppl were just bad at it and it is really a clasic” comments become “Please grant me death god, free me from this torment I beg of you “ the more they play

Sunshine is the most unfinished and un polished mainline mario game. I was going to say 3d mario game but i think even if you include the 2d games its still true. I think sunshine is an 8/10. But all other mario games are so extremely good. I think its better and a more interesting game than most of the 'new' super mario bros games though. But in terms of 3d marios i think its only better than mario 3d land, but that game is great too. Sunshine has alot of personality and i think that counts for alot too.

I actually hated this game when i was younger but like it a lot more as an adult and actually got 100% completion for the first time. I think a 4/10 is way too low. I think on reality its a 6 with some high highs and low lows. Its the worst one but it still isnt bad in my opinion
