Re Pokémon: this is the jankiest game I’ve ever actually played (besides the 3 hours of Anthem I played before refunding it) and I can’t believe I like it as much as I do. It’s not HG/SS or the anywhere near the best Pokémon game, but it is incredibly fun. Give me some patches, and this can be in the conversation for one of my favorites in the series.

Arceus is overall way better and Sword looks better, but I love the structure and story this time around. Just wish the battles were faster and more smooth like Arceus. And the perfomance.... it is so bad.

Arceus was a boring grind fest of chores having to fill out a pokedex. To you, Sword would look better mainly because there's only one big open area outside of the DLC and every other area is a separate area with a load screen, the routes are hallways.

Man, everything about this game sounds like the one to hop back into (I'm similar to Bless where I dropped out around DS games). But the lack of polish is disappointing. Hopefully there is a huge v1.1 type patch that fixes things down the road.

Hard agree about Pokémon abilities. I often find that trying to play “strategic” ends up leaving my Pokémon open for attacks, whereas just being aggressive you can stomp just about anything. The games haven’t made me feel enough incentive to try to buff or debuff.

I’m up to the last Team Star member on my map and if I had to rate Violet rn, I’d say 3/5. It’s passable but other than the opening, I feel like Arceus is where the leap was made. I agree with Tim that Let’s Go had the best art style. If they could ever do that combined with the overall Arceus formula, and just add gyms in there, I’d be good. The Switch can’t handle it but maybe someday.

I didn't have issues with Cyberpunk on PC until they did their first big patch to "fix" an issue with AMD CPU's and ever since then I get random 0fps drops that last 2 seconds. I can see my CPU flatline for a split second and then shoot back up....

I'm honestly surprised by how generous they are being with this game. On technical level it's only mildly better than Cyberpunk was at launch, still no voice acting in 2022, and even though the open world nonlinear structure is great, there's just absolutely nothing in it. I'm still enjoying SV, but ignoring the new nonlinear structure, it's insane how much of a step back this is from the incredible leap forward that Legends Arceus was.

A few of my critiques of Pokemon that aren't STRICTLY about the performance are how slow battles are and the lack of evolution of the actual battle system even in terms of presentation. Look at what Persona 5 did for turn based JRPGs. Its snappy and fast and stylish. TAKE A HINT POKEMON. The animations take forever ESPECIALLY terastalizing which makes the pace of battles even worse. No kidding they put an auto battle feature. All of the prompts being text-based is old as well. The other issue is the open world map design. Every area is an open field, theres no POIs theres no dungeons or landmarks or forests or haunted mansions or power plants all of which have been part of Pokemon before. I know the focus is on the open world but I hope they do a better job of filling it out in the future. Id also like to see an opt-in Multiplayer mode where you can see a handful of other trainers in the area, something like what Destiny does. On top of that they could also make Raid Battles occur in the actual world rather than putting them in this silly crystal you interact with. I don't know if Gamefreak just doesnt know how to dynamically scale encounters but its someting they could learn from other games that have a similar mechanic. They allowed you to see other random players in the Wild Area in Sword and Shield so I'm confused why that wasnt a thing in Scarlet/Violet. Other than that though I think Scarlet and Violet are pretty good games but I'm more excited to see whats after this change. Id give the game a high 3/5 rather than a 4/5 personally. or maybe a low 4/5. That said I think PLA was a better game and did a good job of incentivizing battles and catching duplicates by filling out the pokedex and giving you rewards. I hope they add that to a future mainline title as well. EDIT: I will say I had one of the coolest moments playing this game and watching other people's clips of the same thing makes me realize it was completely by accident. The Ghost Gym Test should absolutely only be done at night when there is a blizzard going because it makes those battles feel BIGGER than everything else. The music is amazing and the atmosphere under those conditions is wonderful. I wish Gamefreak has the stuff to make the presentation for gym battles and the Elite Four equally as great. ANOTHER EDIT: Crazy Bless said some of the same thigns I did and referenced P5 as well. Great minds!

They really just need to hire more people. Pokemon prints money and they just need to get more people to keep up with their output. That being said I like this game a lot, but hopefully they can figure it out cause I like the amount content we get.

bless has it so right. the game has so much good that by the time i really started getting into it, the optimization or lack there of, really didnt bother me anymore. i really liked sword/shield and this step up in the series is so good. i can only hope they take all the good out of this and refine it for the next pokemon.

This isn't an issue of the Switch being underpowered. BotW ran great on on WiiU, stuff like CoD and Genshin run fine on phones...this is a Game Freak not being up to the task of making AAA games problem. Obviously, they're not going to stop making Pokemon games or farm them out to 3rd parties, but Nintendo has to put their foot down on shit like this. If nothing else, get or build for them a support studio that can help out and who knows how to make modern games that don't look/run like total shit.

I disagree with you guys about the gym tests. Gym tests have always been a staple of Pokemon, even since the first game. Riddles and puzzles were always incorporated into gym architecture, and taking them out of the game would make the novelty of gyms go away. You might as well be fighting Timmy #378 and his Rattata. The one thing I didn't like, however, was that not enough battles used the Terastallize mechanic outside the leaders and end game units.

One of the most bonkers things in S/V is the potential of crazy Tera Types + Pokemon Ability combos. I.E. I encountered a Finneon (Water) with a Fire Tera type so makes it Fire. It also had Storm Drain which negates any Water damage done to it and instead boosts Finneon's Sp. Atk. Stuff like that is gonna be some jank combos and I love it.

I'm a bit like Tim who has been burnt out on pokemon so I liked the overall discussion about the pokemon company and its many products. I do wish that Tim had been the main reviewer, not that I wouldn't love to hear someone's perspective who has never played a pokemon game, but that Blessing's huge gap in pokemon doesn't make him the best reviewer when he is comparing aspects of it to "previous" games. For example, you have been able to remember old moves since gen 3 and in Legends Arceus it was streamlined so that the player could do it anytime. Also Black/White and Sun/Moon are known to have really good stories. This of course doesn't make Blessing's review invalid it just doesn't give me confidence in his more objective critiques of the game especially when you are talking about quality-of-life features. Good discussion around and it sounds like the huge performance issues are its only crutch to it being a good game and not just a "good pokemon game".

It's absolutely ridiculous to give this game a 4 out of 5 as broken as it is, no matter how "fun" it is. Reward the game because of some brand bias. Cyberpunk '77 is a 5 out of 5 for me now because the game is what it finally needed to be at release when it was a strong 2 barely scratching a 3. Unfortunately, if this was MS or Sony, they would not have worn the kids gloves as they tend to do for Nintendo. They need to quit rewarding games because of personal bias and potential and actually send a message to these companies that what they're putting out is not good enough.

I’m like 6 hours in to the game and am absolutely addicted. Haven’t battled any gyms, haven’t done any star bases or any titan battles. I’m literally just wandering around the open world catching a ridiculous amount of Pokémon. So far I’ve got over 70 unique Pokémon before the first gym which is just awesome. I also haven’t really noticed any technical issues. Random NPC’s definitely chug along at some crappy frame rates but that doesn’t impact the gameplay at all. It’s still early but this is easily my new favorite Pokémon game ever.

I’m sorry but I find it hard to believe you haven’t noticed any technical issues. The game has constant frame drops. Things pop in one metre away from your character and reports suggest it has a memory leak issue.

@@olibigbird They probably mean they havent noticed anything that made it unable to play. A lot of gamers (especially older) can handle frames dropping to as low as 30. Thats not bad. Destiny 2 cutscenes are still 30fps lol. Id agree if it dropped to 5 frames constantly then Id complain.

Oofff, No level scaling. The point of having things open is that you CAN run into things too difficult and too easy. That's what makes it fun.

On the contrary, you can absolutely get a pokemon that is strong enough to handle higher level pokemon. For example, I caught a Magikarp early and used the EXP candies when I got from Tera raids. Got Gyarados, gave it Ice Fang TM that I found and eventually stumbled upon a cave that had lvl 38 to 41 Dugtrios with Dig, Sandstorm, Slash, Sucker Punch so a 50/50 chance for it to use one of the useless moves. Since then, I've used that for leveling up pokes.

I think it's the delivery of the games? CD pushed Cyberpunk back a lot, insisting that they would release it only when it's ready. But when they did finally release, it was very obvious that it wasn't ready, despite them basically creating the mantra that they would only release when ready. They also were trying to be sneaky and only allowed critics to preview the game on PC to hide how badly the game ran on console. Gamefreak on the other hand, never made such promises, never delayed, nor tried to hide the game's unfinished state. The end result seems to be that they are getting push back, BUT not as badly as CD did.

Everyone has different definitions of playable. People complain when a game is locked to 60fps because the “norm” is 144 and higher. That doesnt excuse Pokemon here, but frame drops is something I see a lot of people being able to look passed. Any game breaking issues though, that needs to be fixed ASAP.

Stop blaming the switch! Cause games such as witcher 3 and skyrim and Xenoblade chronicles 3 look amazing and perform very well. despite the obvious downgrade. to be honest its still a janky pokemon game. u would think they would try more given how much money pokemon pulls, but man its sad. like i would much rather have a small map but have it be more detailed and more dense. like so much of the map is barren wide open fields/land. also u would think maybe the pokemon animations would be better in 3d, no its still bare minimum the pokemon still cant say their name like the cartoon. its still generic monster sounds. like how can pokemon snap have better animation and sounds back in the n64? also u would think the attack animations would be better but nope its still the same old 2d barely moving and effects coming out of mid air. will we actually see pokemon run up and physically attack another pokemon? not in my life time apparently.

Love the game, the frame rate is comically bad. Let's give love to the map and overall ui! Super easy to use and navigate. Auto battle has added a whole new way for me to play if I don't have much time or trying to b line to a location. Using a type match-up with auto battle to a group of weak pokemon is hilarious in a sad way, hearing all the cries back to back 🥲 4/5 only because of the hardware. Come on Nintendo.

How much you wanna bet that the reason this game stuck with him and Arceus didn’t is because he was tasked with reviewing it, meaning he could focus and put time aside to actually play the game… Because this game isn’t THAT much different than Arceus, and in some ways Scarlet/Violet is a step back from that game…

I feel like going directly from GoWR to this would feel so bad. Going from a game that is 99% polished to a game that is 5% polished would be too jarring for me. I would need to go play PS1/N64 games for a few weeks before heading into Scarlet/Violet

It tries to be innovative, but its still nothing more than plain old Pokémon game. I wish they took more risks in the sense that it DOESN'T feel like a generic Pokémon game

I mean its target audience are children. They wont sell a game thats too complex for their audience to complete. I do agree a spinoff from another dev team would be awesome. Like what about the devs for Breath of the Wild? Or Monster Hunter.

I think where the main problem is, is that usually performance isn't an issue in reviews - but we know GameFreak doesn't patch performance improvements into their games. Arceus is the best 3D Pokemon game and they never "fixed it". The only thing GameFreak is 100% going to fix, is the memory leak because that is a critical flaw; but I doubt the game will be in a much better state three months from now.

every time people talk about the "soundtrack" in Pokémon games I'm just can't take them seriously. All the music sounds the same across all the games, you may get different rhythms, but the style is all the same. I just don't get it. In regard to the game kinda being broken it runs on a glorified cell phone what are you really expecting. Yeah, they can spend the next 2 year optimizing it, but they are still limited by the trash hardware.

Arceus does enough to justify how shitty it runs, but personally I agree with you, I don't think this one does anything particularly better or more interesting than Arceus other than having new Pokemon

Idk for me this is the first Pokemon Im playing since Fire Red on the GBA. I also frequently participate in NDA testing so I commonly deal with less than ideal performance, not to mention my PC is already starting to struggle (mainly the 2060). So for me whos used to it, I can see myself enjoying it despite the issues. That doesn’t excuse the performance issues. The Witcher 3 runs on the switch IIRC so I don’t know if its a hardware problem. But Im sure Ill have fun with so many of the sysyems and Pokemon will be completely new for me.

It's the closest the series has ever been to the way we wanted since the original Pokemon anime show kicked off. This is the best and closed it has been. At some point they will be able to take all the ideas from. Let's go, pokémon's Legend Arceus, sword and shields wild area, the open world in co-op of Scarlet and Violet. We will be able to have a proper open world co-op, learn how to catch Pokémon through experience online MMO!

I mean, an open world Pokemon game is all I've ever dreamed about since I played Red in the 90s. And that's what this is. I don't think it's hard to understand. It's rough, I wouldn't recommend it for most, but I had fun with it. Ended up emulating it for smoother FPS. Hopefully the subsequent games are better.

Be better and demand better, this is just as bad as people continuing to buy the Madden franchise not understanding that if you all stop buying shit products they will make changes ffs

Arceus has a much better approach to catching and interacting with Pokemon in the open world. The stealth mechanics and the mechanics that drive the decision making of which Pokeball to use are way more interesting than what this game is doing. Besides the lack of technical polish, I think this dumbed down approach compared to Arceus is my biggest disappointment with a game that I am otherwise enjoying.

The game is unfinished. Plain and simple. It's not just bugs and glitches (which there are many), design decisions made because they didn't have enough time like walking into a shop and it just being a menu with no shop interior. The fps is basically less than 30fps all the time and dips to like 15fps sometimes. There is basically no anti-aliasing anywhere. Jagged lines. PS2/Xbox graphics from 2002 but with way worse performance and issues. My eyes legit hurt when I play the game docked onto my TV. It looks so bad sometimes, I can't believe they shipped it like this. The worst issue of all for me is the pop-in. Characters and Pokemon popping in when you're close but anywhere beyond 20 feet away you just won't see anything. The world looks so empty beyond that 20 feet it's wild. You have no idea where things are sometimes because they can't load anything too far in the distance so you have to explore every single blade of grass to find something. It really hurts exploration in the game. I don't think the discussions from the panel about the issues have done it justice. This is on near Cyberpunk levels of issues and should be known for people who plan on purchasing it.

I feel like most people that watch this and get the game based on this review are going to be disappointed.. which is crappy but.. I stopped playing early on due to performance issues, I guess some people can look past that but I just got too angry that it plays so bad and looks kind of meh that I couldn't go on.

I've played 25 hours and have had addicting fun, even given the inconsistent framerates and the cons I have. The only difference is that I'm not some pissy gamer getting mad at others for having fun with a game. Stop being so negative. Completely agree, giving the game such a high score with its massive technical and graphical problems completely enables Gamefreak. We don't get game codes for free so spending full price on a game like this is unacceptable in my opinion.

@@shinlo9111 I think the KF numerical score is stupid, disingenuous and should be gone. They don't seem to put alot of thought into it. But... listening to them talk about the game they go back and forth about the stuff they like and didn't like and I can understand for there gaming taste from the discussion. I however disagree with the review not holding game freak more accountable, this game not being worth the paying $60. They go into things not being acceptable but yet score it so high.....
