Your immune system then misidentifies a body part as a foreign body and attacks it. In type 1 diabetics, it’s the pancreas but there are hundreds of other autoimmune conditions. Once you have one, it is very likely to get others at a future point in your life. You can also get type 1 diabetes at any age. You just need a trigger. There's a little bit of nuance to this question (but not much). The short version is that if I call myself Dr. Mallon, that in itself is not criminal. If I self identify as a doctor in the context of giving you medical advice (especially if I am offering medical services or trying to persuade people to do things by saying "trust me, I am a doctor"), that's a different story. In the case of this Internet health guru, it sounds like she is a chiropractor, or was at one point, and it is common for those in that line of work to call themselves doctors (at least in the US). I would say that if she gave someone some kind of actionable medical advice (like if she said drinking mercury cures asthma or something and one of her Twitter followers died as a result) there could definitely be a case there. But probably the first thing her attorneys would argue is that she doesn't have a medical degree and never claimed to have one.

@@crow4972 That's true. I'm not saying being overweight is correct, and being type 2 is totally different than type 1. Talking about Adderall and not taking it... When I was young (in the 80s), I was on Ritalin for ADHD. I found it worked remarkably well and I was actually able to focus on things in school. During the summer, my mother decided she was going to take me off Ritalin because she was worried it would stunt my growth. That was the worst summer I ever had and it took me years to forgive my mother for doing that to me. I didn't know how to express my feelings so I just told her "I feel jumpy". What I was trying to say is, "my body doesn't feel like I'm the one controlling it and my muscles are constantly twitching". My mother finally took me to the doctor about 3/4 through summer and he told her, "that was not a good idea" (about taking me off Ritalin). The rest of my summer was rather nice! Parents, if your child is diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, get a second opinion. If the diagnosis persists, please don't arbitrarily take your child off....well, ANY medication without consulting their doctor.

First off, adderall is additive. And so if you go off of it cold turkey, you will suffer from withdrawal symptoms. If you look up the medication on WebMD or other sources, it very clearly says that. So, you definitely should work with your doctor on these things as you say. But at the same time, you shouldn't blindly take medications just because your doctor recommends it either. It's important to hear what the doctor says and then do your own research on the subject. Then with that information in hand, you are in a position to consider the benefits and risks involved with taking the medication. Doctors make mistakes, and they over prescribe medications. So, patients really need to educate themselves and to advocate for themselves to get the best possible health care. In my case, I was diagnosed with ADD along with autism when I was about 44 years old. I had been managing my condition for decades without the use of medication. So, why would I take a potentially dangerous drug now? It made no sense at all. Elon has Asperger's and may also have ADD like I do. It's pretty common for Aspies. But when you combine the neurological differences associated with Asperger's and ADD, there is no way for me to know how close my situation is with other people with ADD or ADHD. Or how easy or difficult it might be to control it without medication. I would just advise people to exercise caution whenever dealing a drug with potentially dangerous side effects.

Sometimes I'll have people be like "are you sure you have anxiety? You don't /seem/ anxious." Like for one, considering I've probably had anxiety for most of my life and it was misdiagnosed as autism (due to anti-social tendencies I picked up as a result) before being deemed that I was "just quirky", yeaaah I don't believe for a moment I "seem anxious" to anyone. Two, of course I don't seem anxious, the medicine I take is doing what it's supposed to do to reduce my anxiety to begin with. As someone with adhd I appreciate the defense of Adderall. Every medicine has potential side effects and can even rarely lead to severe unprecedented reactions. But that doesn't mean those medicines are bad for everyone, and fear mongering only makes the issue worse. It's important that people are aware of the potential side effects and symptoms of severe reactions so they can keep an eye out and make an informed choice on whats best for them. I started taking Strattera (atomoxetine) for my adhd and had such a bad reaction I ended up in the ER, now I take Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) and it works really well for me. I had a similar struggle, I tried to get my diagnosis at age 19, after observing multiple classmates who also had adhd and reading up on it. I brought my school reports from my elementary school to my therapist at the time and asked them to look at it and reconsider the autism diagnosis they gave me, because there were no indications for autism to be found in the teachers’ notes, rather strong evidence for me having adhd instead (two psychiatrists confirmed this for me). But they refused to look at it because they were so convinced that I was on the spectrum solely based on the fact that I played online games with childhood friends as a way to hang out with them because my parents were super strict at the time and only let me out to either go to therapy or to school. A medic recommend tasting pee to me when I was in the military... yeah he was a bit of a weirdo. There is a small tiny bit of truth in that in the past tasting pee was a way to check for diabetes, but now we have superior diagnostic tools than "idk tastes kinda sweet".
@TerryProthero2 жыл бұрын
If it's alright with you, I'll just poke my finger and use my digital meter. First, I'm pretty certain it's going to be more accurate. Second, I don't need to taste pee. I see that as a winning situation across the board. But in all seriousness, I think there is a small bit of truth to this. The problem being that you probably wouldn't taste anything in their urine until they had ridiculously high sugar levels. You would want to catch things long before that. And worse still, that doesn't help you with low blood sugar levels. Which are even more dangerous than high blood sugar levels. And on top of all those problems, it takes time for urine to form and be excreted. A blood test will tell what is happening right now rather than being an average of what has been happening over the last several hours.

@@Shit4Brains456 In that case, you have a serious problem. Because of the reasons I stated. There might be a tiny grain of truth to the idea of tasting the urine. But in the vast majority of cases, it wouldn't help at all. Probably only in the case of someone having extremely high sugar levels. And even then, it's not a precise enough test to allow you to properly treat the person. All you would know is that they are diabetic. It wouldn't tell you how much medication to give them. That's kind of important if you don't want to kill them. So, not really very helpful. You just tasted pee for nothing. Also, what diabetic would have modern medicine for it and not have proper testing equipment? Literally none. Diabetics always have both with them. If they didn't have one, they wouldn't have the other. So, now you tasted pee, found out they are diabetic, and have nothing to treat them with. Again, not very helpful.

@UCCmN4aM8h1sIerGUJmE2ftg Let me clear that up for you. Type 1 diabetes is when your body doesn't produce insulin. Or so little that it might as well be producing none. This is caused by damage to the pancreas from an accident, injury, an autoimmune problem, etc. Type 2 diabetes is a form of diabetes where your body produces a respectable amount of insulin but not quite enough. This is most often the result of insulin resistance. This is a situation where your body doesn't use insulin as efficiently as a normal person. Some thin people have type 2 diabetes, but it's far more common in obese people later in life. Let's say 40+ years in age. For this reason, people with type 1 diabetes always need to be on medication whereas that may or may not be the case with type 2 diabetes. Mostly because type 2 diabetes often responds well to losing weight and improvements to a person's diet. In my case, for instance, I can keep mine under control with my diet. And if I were to lose enough weight, my numbers might return to normal levels. So far I have seen an improvement by just losing 20 or 30 pounds. I have about 100 more to go. And keep in mind that I'm a pretty mild case even with being 51 and morbidly obese. Basically, type 2 diabetes tends to be less serious of a condition and is more easily treatable. But if left untreated, it can get ugly as well. As in going blind and body parts turning gangrene and needing to be amputated kind of ugly.
@johndododoe14112 жыл бұрын
@@TerryProthero I wonder how many of those additional problems (feet, eyes etc.) apply only to type 2, and if type 1 patients waste time constantly combating those risks. Then of cause there's the P cancer that causes late life type 1 with lots of other symptoms, including death.
@TerryProthero2 жыл бұрын
The problem is that there are a lot of people who don't know the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes can be treated by losing weight and/or changes in diet. When my AIC got to 6.9, my doctor insisted on putting me on diabetic medication. I told him no. And then over the next few months I changed my diet and lost about 20 pounds. With no medication, my AIC dropped to 6.2. Then over the next few months it dropped to 6.0. I later found that the AIC goal for a diabetic as anything under 7.0. So he should never have been pushing medication on me in the first place. It takes work, but my sugar levels are extremely well controlled just with diet. Better, in fact, than what would be possible with medication.

But being diagnosed at age 25 (i found out women tend to be underdiagnosed because they present less outwardly hyperactive on average) Being medicated saved my life from a hell spiral. I was able to take back control of my life to the point my moms attitude went from "Just eat better and exercise. Yoy shouldnt need medication forever" (prediagnoses. My 1st psych tried so many variations of antidepressants instead of looking if anything else was wrong) To now saying "Your insurance lapsed? How much are your meds. You seem so much better on them I dont want you to get worse again" (uninsured my Concerta for 30 days is almost 200$ Canadian) These drugs arent evil. But the stigma around it hurts alot.

I didn’t take any sex education classes. I am only knowledgeable because my household had more females than males. I saw tampons and pads a lot growing up, just seeing them under the sink or in the trash. My parents had trouble explaining it, but my older sisters didn’t hold back. However, these men who believe that women can choose the exact moment they have a period never learned growing up. It ain’t their fault. Blame the schools for not teaching them, blame the mom/parents for not teaching them, and/or blame the fact that topics on periods and feminine products such as tampons and pads are considered taboo, especially when trying to explain it to men.

totally agree. i grew up in Guatemala and went to a small, private Christian school (not rich 😅). they did not hold back on sex ed. in 6th grade theyd taught us about periods, so when i got it in 7th grade i didnt freak out and knew exactly what to do, and by 8th grade we knew everything we needed to know about the reproductive system, sexual urges, etc, so we knew how sex worked and everything. and my parents explained to me when i was a child (still didnt understand squat until i was older so no impact anyway lol) and whenever i had questions as i got older they never hid anything. they knew i had to know all this and that i was growing up, so they explained everything in full. which is why i understood all the innuendos in Seinfeld 🤣 i really wish my country were the same 😒

Free period products in school bathrooms are great!! 20 yrs ago we were lucky if the tampon machine at school even worked & you actually had correct change for it. Some girls would hack the machine to get free product.

I’m actually less likely to react in anger when I’m taking Adderall because it helps me tolerate overstimulation, I get less frustrated with myself because I can actually concentrate and get tasks done, and I tend to be more optimistic and patient when faced with a problem to solve. It’s really changed my life but there’s so much misinformation and stigma around ADHD that I often feel I can’t tell people that my brain works a little differently and I sometimes need a little help. Thank you for this!

I find it super infuriating that so many people refuse to see the nuance of stimulant medications. It’s either it’s your only option if you have adhd or it’s terrible drug that doesn’t work for anyone. As someone with adhd it’s exhausting to have this conversation over and over again

It's not belly fat... It's a protective coating so things I bump into don't break from touching my rock hard abs... at least according to what my dad used to say
@Jixsurez2 жыл бұрын
That's correct! There are linings that separate the bodily cavities as well as the organs. The pleura surrounds lungs, the pericardium surrounds the heart, and the pericardium separates the abdominal cavity from the chest cavity. These membranes serve the purpose that our organs don't suffer friction. When there is a problem with the pericardium you can get a hernia.
@nbassasin80922 жыл бұрын
you are actually partially right. Im sorry in advance if my translation is bad since i study these things in my own language and latin, and Im translating it to english rn, but you have what is called visceral fat and the subcutaneouss fat. so in a sense, you do have a layer of fat that is protective coating for organs, but that fat does not make you have a belly like the tweet suggests, that is the subcutaneous one
@Jixsurez2 жыл бұрын
@@nbassasin8092 You reminded me! Thank you for that. I haven't taken anatomy in years since changing to an it major. That info was tickling in the back of my head. We do need *some* fat to survive (this is part of why eating disorders are so dangerous) body builders can have a struggle with balancing fat and muscle in their body too. 6% body fat for men and 16% body fat for women is the lowest you can go before you become unhealthy. Of course the normal percentage for the average person is a bit higher (but no where around the person who made the tweet lol).

Adderall did make me angry, so I was switched to Ritalin, but it just wasn't the right medication for me. I have friends who Adderall worked really well for, but Ritalin just made them feel spaced out. We all have different brains. :)
@johndododoe14112 жыл бұрын
Ritalin is extremely powerful and can easily cause side effects. There are milder drugs outside the amphetamine family, if your doctor knows how to use them.

Same thing happened with me, Adderall made it hard to control emotions and Ritalin turned me into a zombie. Didn't even need any of those, turns out 7 year old me was just acting like a kid and doctors didn't like that. 14 years later and I'm still dealing with the long term effects

@@lieutenantdan8541 That is a story that has become far, far to common since doctor's started diagnosing kids with ADHD left, right, and center in the 90's. Hell, I had a friend when I was growing up (during the 90's) and when he was off his meds I could out-work him on my family's farm by lunch, and he couldn't figure out where all of MY energy came from as HE was diagnosed with ADHD and I wasn't.

my daughter will start Ritalin this month, she's only 9yo, and I'm a bit concerned about this
@Razmoudah Жыл бұрын
@@kira_gacha1 Well, I'm not a doctor, or any other kind of related medical expert. As such, the only valid advice I can give you is to get a second, or even third, opinion first. As for reasons to get such opinions: How much trouble does she have with actually learning the material for school and taking tests? If she's making it through all of her tests with a high C or low B average on them than even if she might be Hyperactive she probably isn't Attention Deficit. Heck, for that matter what are the things she really enjoys? Or more accurately, can she pay attention to an entire episode, or even movie, of her favorite shows or sports? Even if she can't sit still for it if she can keep enough of her focus on them to make it through before she HAS to go do something else than there is absolutely no clinical reason for her to be diagnosed as being Attention Deficit. Sadly, at that point most meds are more likely to cause long-term problems than be a useful short-term solution to the fact that she has a lot of energy. Now, if she CAN'T maintain enough focus to make it through something that she really likes for 30 minutes to 2 hours then yeah, she probably has some degree of Attention Deficit and there is probably some med out there that would be a help to her. Which one is the one that'll work right for her is hard to say, and her brain will be going through so many changes over the next decade that what works now may not work in a couple of years and it'll take something else entirely a coupe of years after that. Further, it will probably interfere with how her brain develops, as ANYTHING that messes with brain function will disrupt how it develops up into the mid-to-late teens if it is taken for an extended time. So really, you should speak with a specialist or two before you fully agree to subjecting her to any meds that will mess with her mind at this point, as they're the only ones who'll be able to give you solid answers.
