Here’s a 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage that has over 500,000km. In this video, I go over how it’s holding up and any major problems it’s had so far.

And here's some other random clips of a 2014 Mirage used for a few camping trips in the back country.

Update: 536,500kms/333,000miles. This car still runs good. I had to replace the catalytic convertor(installed a used one) recently because it broke loose inside and was partially plugging the exhaust causing it to be noticeably low on power.

I just want more sound deadening, better suspension, better materials, more space, a bigger, more powerful engine with more cylinders and better transmission and brakes to deal with it. The issue is those engines are too inefficient witthout lots of technology and with the other things carmakers always go overboard and stuff so much extra technology into the cars that it just becomes a headache, often even before it breaks!

That's the great thing about the super basic cheap cars. Less features = less to break. Even when something does break they're stupid easy to work on and the parts are cheap. The base model Hyundais are good for this too. In my elantra the automatic was an extra. Same with cruise control and even A/C was optional lol. Keep an eye on fluids, do your regular oil changes, make sure your tires are good, keep the underside clean during winter so it doesn't rust. Basic maintenance stuff. I have a 2015 1.2 CVT. Now 8 years from new, and 130.000 km. Not a single defect. Not even a light bulb broke. Only a squeeking belt, that I replaced as a precaution, and a small leak in the roofrail. What was not good was that I needed to align the front wheels, but that was difficult to do, because left front had a lot of positive camber, and right front had a lot of negative camber. It took some effort to get those to factory specs (no camber). But, I checked all the fluids under the hood today, all still full after 10.000 km of driving.

Paint blistering and rust bubbles by the window and passenger door rot after 4 years, tranny problems, heated seats that never worked on the drivers despite new switch replacements the dealer did, electrical issues with the back up camera and screen, very poor handling and multiple failures of various components. I bought it thinking it would be a simple and cheap car to work on, it was not. I bought an older used yaris and the quality and reliability far surpasses the new mirage.

You must have gotten a lemon. The paint is thin though, on the higher mileage cars here the front edge of the hood and roof above the windshield is full of paint chips and surface rust. Cvt's are hit or miss. We have some in the fleet with 400-540,000kms on the original cvt, others failed at 200,000kms. Most of the fleet cars don't have heated seats but my 2014 does and they still work great despite it being flooded in a river for hours. Overall, they're pretty low maintenance compared to the Nissans, Fords and Chevy's in the fleet.

If you can get past the fact that these things are slow compared to pretty much anything else on the road, get blown around in the wind and are tin cans then why not! They’re simple, dependable, I average 40mpg in mine, dirt cheap cost of ownership, easy to fix and maintain. Can park then anywhere, pull a u-turn on a dime, and regardless of what most say, they can drive on the highway… they’re noisy and get blown around but it’s a 2000lb car. They really haven’t changed a lot since 2013 other than making them look less outdated. And that’s not a bad thing. Used low mileage parts are aplenty to keep these turds going for a while.

I'm baffled your CVT has lasted this long. The CVT on my 2014 started having that common surging problem around 40k miles, 10k miles after getting it serviced. I didn't bother bringing it into the dealership for diagnosis because the surging was very random. I knew they'd test-drive it and just say they couldn't replicate the issue. I think what kills these CVTs is improper servicing. From my understanding, the dealership does not clean or replace the screens when they change the fluid. I think that's what's killing them so early for a lot of people.

I dont know the terrain and road condition in your region but based on the engine bay I've seen, a lot of dust and dirt. even on the unders, rust is building up. good thing I dont have that in my unit. Undercoat paint will do the job to protect it. Even the interiors. the presence of dirts are so visible.

I bought mine, a 2019 mitsu mirage a year ago and it's really amazing, at first it was weird driving it since i used to drive an old dodge caravan, but i'm so happy with it, on the highways it's so good, average 120km/hrs usually, on country roads you gotta take a bit of extra care and drive slowly, otherwise runs like a charm, a great car. Tho 1 question, when should i change or like do the CVT maintenance, now it got 45200 kms on it, thanks for the advice in advance ♥️

I try to change the cvt fluid every 50,000km on the fleet that I maintain. I’m pretty sure that’s what the severe service schedule calls for. These take some getting used to. I went from a 1 ton diesel truck as a commuter car to a Mirage. They’re a great way to save money.

have you changed cvt fluid on the vehicle?
@turdpailsandtrails
@turdpailsandtrails 6 ай бұрын
Yes, I replaced the fluid 6 times in this car. 5 drain and fills (just pulled the drain plug no filter replacements), and one time I dropped the pan and cleaned out the valve body @ 390k km. I usually try to change fluid every 50k km but that doesn't always happen. This car is still going at 530k kms.

Would you say changing the transmission fluid early, like every 30,000 KM would prevent the CVT Transmission filters from getting dirty?
@turdpailsandtrails
@turdpailsandtrails Жыл бұрын
Changing it early isn't going to hurt anything, if the filters are gonna pick anything up changing the fluid isn't going to prevent it. The car I showed in the latest video hasn't had either cvt filter replaced and the fluid was changed at 50-100k km intervals.

@gkauto1959
@gkauto1959 6 ай бұрын
Ok you sound like you ae ready to get dirty, so here goes: go ahead and change that oil even 3k, not 5 or 6, do it at 3k! Its only 3 quarts, so these oil changes are cheap. check your tire inflation, the tires are always under inflated, they say on the sidewall they can take up to 51 psi so put 45 psi in there! on your CVT service , use Amsoil fully synthetic CVT fluid, its far superior to the Mitsubishi factory CVT oil ad will improve shift quality and let you run that automatic into the 300k range. Thats reeky it, its just those 3 things, and by the way you can skip changing the oil filter once changing the oil, just skip it until every other oil change, especially when you go on amazon and buy neodiyum magnets that slap onto the side of the filter housing, that magnetize the inside of the filter housing trapping all sorts of debris that way. Or look up "oil filter mag" on the. web and see what they look like. Have fun, these are just the best transportation cars built today!!

Have you replaced the timing chain inside the engine? The owner’s manual says to change it at 120,000 or 150,000mi( i forget now). I have a 2020 mirage LE and im at 97,000 mi. I did do a brake fluid flush andthe usual oil and transmission fluid change

No, I’ve never replaced one on these engines. There’s a number of Mirages in the fleet I maintain with 250-300,000miles and they’ve never had any engine work or even oil leaks.

I usually try to replace the fluid(just drain from the plug and refill 2.5L) every 50k km(30k miles). That didn't always happen on time with this car...and it's never had any of the cvt filters replaced. I took the valve body out and cleaned it out about a year ago and recently dropped the pan again to inspect and it looked good. I just use universal cvt fluid. No need for mitsu labled stuff in my opinion.

@turdpailsandtrails P.S. from my looking into it. Your cvt fluid is probably better than the "genuine" stuff anyway. NS-2 was supplied by a Shell subsidiary and was rubbish (thousands of failures). NS-3 is supplied by idemetsu to mitsubishi, suzuki, Nissan etc. Anyone with the jatco product. But it's still only a semi synthetic at 3x the price of fully synthetic oils that have proven to last and prevent any wear for far longer.

Are you talking about the unlock/lock buttons on the key? Find out if your car came with keyless entry first. If it did see if a locksmith can supply, cut and program a key. Or try a dealer(pricey). If your car didn’t come with keyless entry you can’t just get a key and make it work. You’d have to go the aftermarket route.
