@@danwake4431 Well known problem with the Cruze, Sonic, VM Golf, VW Rabbit, Trax, etc The output shaft bearing goes bad if the transmission fluid isn't changed regularly (around 20-25k I read is best and 50k Minimum) and you drive the car hard/long distances. Since the transmission is small and the fluid heats up and it cooks the fluid. Best thing is to switch to Amsoil fluid which has much higher temp tolerance to save the transmissions.

I own a 2021 Versa S, 5-Speed. I have owned it for 3 years now. I love it! I do wish that the "Sportier" SR model came with a 5-Speed option too. The Versa cons for me: 1) Nissan Dealers. 2) CVT Transmissions. 3) 5-Speed only available on Base S model. 4) Cheap hard plastic steering wheel & shifter knob on S models. 5) Cheapest Suspension that I have ever seen(front strut mounting brackets do not have the normal 2 or 3 mounting bolts that hold the struts to the body of the car, they are held to the body by the one main nut of the strut shaft). 6) S Model Radio/Head Unit, does not come with Android Auto & there are no adapter trim plates(yet?) to replace the void that will be left by the unique shape of the stock head unit going to a much better aftermarket head unit. By the way, Nissan dealers will rape you on price, if you buy a new, sub-par SR trim factory head unit with more power, better features & perfect fitment. 7) Factory Seats... this one is really nit picking. The S trim seats are the best base/cheapest economy seats I have ever sat in... but for spirited driving or in the twisty's they do not offer much support. No major Racing Seat Maker offers a 2020+ Versa Mounting Bracket Kit, so upgrading the seats to a Bride or Sparco seat is very difficult. The factory SR trim seats are a little better, but not real sport seats(used they are going for over $400 each, which I might do later?). My driving style is much more aggressive than your average driver that this car was built for, so for most my cons are not a factor. My pros: 1) The looks/external appearance/body. I still think this is the best looking entry/economy car. 2) Standard features. 3) Manual/5-Speed option. Manuals are becoming a very hard to find transmission option on any car sold in North America. 4) Fuel economy. It's not ultra high, but it is better than most larger cars. Even with my driving style, I'm getting 37+ mpg combined. 5) Social Media Communities. There is actually a lot of driver/owner support online for the Versa & unlike a lot of other social media groups Versa owners are actually very nice & respectful. My advice? Buy It with The 5-Speed! But only if you can get it for very close or less than MSRP. Also worth considering, buy a 2020+ Versa S 5-Speed, used(not much has changed since the new model change in 2020) and avoid all the Nissan Dealer BS. As for the other CVT model Versa's... I still don't trust the longevity of CVT transmissions in general(Jetco/Nissan has the worst rep of all CVT's). So I can't really recommend Versa's with CVT's. On the good side, CVT transmission failures happen more often with heavier cars & less often with lighter cars... well the Versa is a very light car & with regular maintenance, most Versa owners have said that their CVT's are lasting a long time & not many failures at all. That's my opinion, but this is the best & most informative video on the current model Versa & I even learned a few things about my car, so Thank You for your video!

I am glad Nissan still makes cars like this as every other maker seems to be abandoning them and we need cheaper cars for the poor and middle class. This is an affordable car and if your afraid of the CVT I have a family member with a Maxima with over 200k miles on it. The key to making a CVT last is service and done way more often than regular transmissions. I think what hurt Nissan in early models was they told buyers it was a sealed transmission for life and people never bothered to service them. If this is all I could afford I would not hesitate in buying one. I think it is better built than other brands like Kia. Personally I would go for a Corolla or Civic if I could afford them.

I have a 2023 manual, and I've enjoyed it so far. I do wish it had a six speed or that the gear ratio was stretched a little more. Also the body panels are very flimsy, but that's how it is with most new cars. Other than those tiny gripes it's a joy to drive. Also I havent noticed the issue with hitting bumps mentioned in this video, the ride on mine is very nice but I've got the 15 inch wheels with lots of rubber on the tires so maybe I'm just not noticing something he's picking up on.

My dad has the 2017 versa manual and the only thing we both agree it that we wish was different was that it either had a sixth gear or higher fifth like you said. We did a lot of 1000 mile+ road trips when I was in high school and the car would be at 4k+ rpms when doing 80 or above on the highway. Fuel economy when going over 70-75 also starts to decline drastically.

@@fallguy4209 If you know what you're buying, Nissans are a far better value. You just sound like another sheep blabbing about toyota because you heard everyone else say it and you're desperate to feel like you were invited to the party. Toyotas have had their issues too, and they've been price gouging more than anyone for several years now because clowns follow clowns. Look at how many Nissan hardbody's from the 90s are still running around. I don't see a fraction of the same toyotas from those years. The Frontier has been and still is a better truck than a Tacoma, for many reasons. You just have to get it in a manual. But you sound like someone who thinks they're super cool with trucks, yet probably doesn't know how to drive a manual, or maybe it hurts your pretty hands too much. And even though you can't get a Frontier in manual anymore, I'd still take it in auto any day of the week over this 4cyl turbo overrated junk Tacoma. For this Versa with the manual, it's a solid simple car and a great price that will hang just as good if not better than any corrolla, and especially any other common junk like kia or hyandai etc. You could nearly buy two of these manual Versas over the lowest Corolla.....being that Toyota doesn't even offer a simple Eco car in this range anymore. Because they think they're too good for that now, because too many clowns kept overpaying for their stuff and Egos are full. You just have to understand some basics and not be completely stupid with vehicle choices. Or you can just overpay for a toyota and fool yourself into thinking that you have something that somehow lightyears ahead of anything else. I love Toyotas, but man oh man am I getting tired of all the clueless fanboys making it an embarrassment.

It’s a nice looking and equipped vehicle for the price point. Here in New Jersey you can get an SR for around $22000 to $23000. The only thing that would make me hesitant. Is the negative history of the automatic transmissions Nissan uses. The only Nissan product I ever owned, was a 1993 Sentra, manual transmission. I purchased it new. I kept the vehicle clean and it always looked new. But after about seven or eight years, the undercarriage rusted very badly. And parts of the body started to rust. Hopefully things have improved with them since then lol. Excellent review. This has to be one of the best reviews I have seen. Very thorough and to the point.

The trouble that I found with the options is that you can rarely find a Versa on stock that hasn't been overfilled by the dealer with useless options... just to jack up the price. It makes it hard to find the car configuration and color that you want. Eve n so... I find it to be the ideal car for 2024, when EVs aren't quite worth buying from a purely financial perspective and yet you don't want to risk investing a lot of money on a bigger gasoline car as gas prices are likely to go up over time.

The auto parts store I work for has a few older nissans with the 1.6L engine. I think they added the extra injectors to make it fire smoother, because they tended to be a little rough upon light acceleration, almost as if it was bogging down slightly in my experience. This probably fixes that flaw.
@keithwilliams5976 Жыл бұрын
Definitely a manual transmission with that 1.6 liter 4 cylinder is the way to go. Before I bought my Prius Prime I had an 09 Nissan Versa with that 1.6 and 5 speed manual which was the 1st year of that engine for that car and it was a very reliable car for what it was. Just did basic maintenance to it and the car would keep running and my Versa didn't even burn a drop of oil at almost 200K.
@irongoose3865 Жыл бұрын
I think one can get well over 200,000 miles out of a Nissan CVT with annual CVT fluid changes. Even with changes every 30,000 miles I believe it's possible. In fact I think a CVT can be more reliable then a manual for most people because most people aren't going to be able to get that many miles out of a clutch. Clutches are expensive to replace and involve removing the transmission, same process as removing a bad CVT transmission. CVTs aren't as bad as many people think. Most CVT problems have risen from poor maintenance schedules. That and dealerships telling people it's a sealed unit and the fluid never needs changing. I've have read comments by people who claim that even with their pre 2016 Nissans they are passed 200,000 miles with their cars and having no problem with their CVTs. Most people will never learn to drive a clutch properly and only know basic up shifting and might not even master that! This is why they'll never get 200,000 miles from a clutch. They are lucky if they can get 100,000 miles! And like I said , clutch replacements are expensive. Not to mention the gear ratios on The Versa are very close making it even harder to shift especially during spirited driving. It's not hard to rag a 5 speed Versa! But it takes a lot of skill to drive one properly.

I have a 21 year old vibe that started to act like it was about to explode at idle. It just stopped turning over on first try and then completely died on me in a parking lot. I was so pissed, and started looking at new cars. Versa manual was on the list. Instead, I did some research, bought a new battery, starter, and intake manifold gasket and spent a day working on my vibe. Now, it fires up no problem, sounds great, and accelerates like a little old sports hatch. Went and spent $9 at a car wash and swept out the inside. All told, my little $1,400 beater took about $250 worth of maintenance and a day of my time and now feels like a new car. I am so happy I decided to do that rather than go spend $20,000 on a new, "cheap," car.

Sad, but at least the price justifies the Mex mfg, otherwise it could not be this price. What's DISGUSTING is that, while Nissan makes its Frontier in the USA, Toyota moved all TACOMA production to Mexico, yet charges MORE than the Frontier. And it's TRIPLE the price of the Versa. All that labor windfall goes straight into Toyota pockets. Not a dime is passed on to the buyer. What's Toyotas excuse, other than greed? They already had a Tacoma plant in the US.

A lot of cheap cars have a bad reputation, but I think lots of times that's because they are driven hard and not well-maintained. I have a 2010 Focus- timing chain, port injection, old-school 4AT tranny. Lots of hard plastic, but it's all easy to clean and take care of. For a 14 year old car, it's holding up and still looks good. Having a cheap reliable car is actually liberating, and I don't care one bit what other people think about me. Coming from a 2018 Versa Note, it looks like Nissan has carried over a lot of aspects to this year. Here are my thoughts and I hope it helps someone out. That mushy headliner? I never even noticed it. But it has held up. And my car sits in the sun all day. It even went through a major typhoon with no leaks. Nissan did a good job with the seals. It’s a good car. It can park anywhere. Turning radius is great. And I live in Guam. Maximum speed here is 35mph. Perfect for the speed here. But I wouldn’t use it in the states for highway driving or passing for that matter. It’s a good city car. Nothing wrong with the CVT. Had a cvt tranny fluid replaced at 30k miles. Maybe that is helping the longevity of the tranny. Only now on its 6th year, I’m starting to feel the rubber band acceleration that cvts are known for. But the first five years, it almost felt as if it had instant torque. I’m due for a cvt service at 60k miles so hopefully that will breathe new life in the tranny. In the 2nd year, the AC went out. Compressor had to be replaced. Covered under warranty though. 4th year, car stalled twice from a complete stop. Compete loss of power. Nissan recommended to replace throttle body. Covered under warranty. 5th year. Violent shaking. Nissan replaced worn engine mounts. Not covered under warranty. $600 job. Still in 5th year. Check engine light. Code P2690. Nissan wanted $4k to fix the problem as they have to replace all the sensors and replace catalytic converter. Took to an independent mechanic and he said it’s not a big concern as we don’t have emission inspections on the island. He cleared the code and didn’t charge me. 2024. In June the AC went out again. $3k job. Out of warranty. This car has been to the shop more times than I would like just in the first 6 years alone. Again, nothing wrong with the Cvt, just everything else. It’s like it was assembled poorly with the cheapest parts. Yeah, it’s a cheap car but still. Anyway, I hope my two cents helped someone out here. You get what you pay for with this car. Again, it’s a great car, when it’s not being fixed. I love the Nissan designs, but unless they’re all built in Japan again, I’m done with Nissan. Looking forward to either a Toyota or Mazda next year.

I own a 2022 base trim of Versa, it is true that there are lots of safety features: front & rear sensors plus anti-collision brake, basic cruise control, lane departure warning, high beam assist, and a little bit of useful, it has height-adjustable driver seat with a telescopic steering wheel. It is also equipped with more airbags than the Kia Rio although cars on this level still have a high death rate. From my daily use: Pro: good fuel efficiency, low cost in all aspects, big trunk, a little bit higher ground clearance that can put the lip on the curb, plenty of safety features, small car width, and short hood gives confidence for a new driver. Con: slow acceleration, noisy ride over 70 km/h, soft chassis. Also, the CVT transmission should be discussed. It is smart, I always feel it is guessing whether I want constant cruising speed. But in winter, it needs time to warm up, sometimes even about 10 minutes. In conclusion, it fits the price, you cannot expect more on this level of cars. and if it is equipped with heated front seats, I would give it a higher score. Personally, I would trade in it when good timing comes to get a new Subaru Crosstrek 2.5, or Mazda CX-30 2.5.

But they don't last. My neighbor recently scrapped her 2016 Versa because the CVT died among many other issues. Radiator fan died, blower motor died, AC didn't work, numerous random electrical issues, suspension going out, etc.. Also, the cheapness of many parts was quite obvious to me. Even many of the rubber hoses were very hard and felt like they were already reaching the end of their life. She now has a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage and it's also cheaply built in a lot of ways, but it seems to be holding up much better. Personally, if I had to drive a new econobox, I'd get a 5 speed Mitsubishi Mirage. Best warranty, best fuel efficiency, simplest, and seems to hold up the best.

There are going to be compromises whenever something is among the very cheapest on the market, so knowing your priorities is key. If acceleration is a priority for someone, the Mirage isn't for them. That said, I've driven my neighbor's Mirage with the CVT and it really isn't unusably slow for how and where I drive, which is in a relaxed way and in light to moderate traffic. It has plenty of power to go legal speeds even up the hills around here. Others may feel differently though and that's fine, definitely test drive whichever car you are considering before buying it.

I want to share my story of my 2010 Versa! my close friend passed away and left me her 2010 Nissan Versa hatchback. Standard transmission (not the CVT I’ve read complaints about). Not sure which engine but it’s slow. lol. I call it my toy car and that I feel like the Flinstones trying to get on a highway in average timing. lol but otherwise just teasing and no complaints! It had 40,000 something miles on it when she passed. It’s close to 60,000 now and I’ve only had to put a set of new tires on it and oil changes. I never removed her stuff from the glovebox or the rear view mirror. What it needs: 1. Rear passenger window won’t roll either way 2. Some rubber plate under the front end rubs the parking curbs and continues to sag or drop and drag. 3. A few days ago the hatchback handle stopped working so I can only use the backseat. It is coming due for break pads in maybe 6 months. I’ll have them rechecked soon. I’ve had it 4 years. My little car isn’t fancy and it’s older so things are giving out but it is otherwise in great condition and what a blessing to me from my very dear friend. God Blessed me with her.

I'm a 59 year old kid, and I would buy this thing. An impressive little commuter car, and looks more expensive than it is. My Nissan Hardbody has carried me through 30 years. I'm over the need for luxury.

We had about 50 of them at work and they were good cars until about 100,000 miles and then the transmissions failed. We upgraded to the Kicks and the same thing, great car until the transmission started acting up. Ours were used for delivery and we maintained them, the most we got out of a Versa was 135,000. Doesn't matter how good the engine is if the trans fails.

The Jatco CVT's are garbage.

What year were those? This article says the Jatco’s are improved in the last few years. Even Scotty says so.

I have a base model versa 2020. 58,000 miles on it so far. I bought it new. Has the cvt. I have done all maintenance on it so far even a cvt fluid change at 40,000 miles. Everything still works perfectly. 36 mpg average.

@@jamesiv2456 I'm a young 70 year old lady . I consider myself somewhat of a conservative and this is the first new car 🚗 I have bought in years I intend to take the utmost care, keeping it in garage, and service when it should be. I've gotten a lot of good pointers from you guys And I thank you. I've only had mine for two months and time will tell. Hope my Vers lasts as long as I do or at least till I stop driving knowing the pros a cons will help with my journeys . Thanks a bunch
