Watching this video brings tears to my eyes. Though I've never been to Sudan, after traveling as an exile for two years, I met my first Sudanese friend during a Workaway project in Turkey. It was the first time in those two years that I felt truly understood by someone. We became so deeply connected that saying goodbye to her was one of the hardest moments of my travels. I’m incredibly grateful to all of you for sharing the truths of people who often have no power or opportunity to present themselves as they truly are to the world. As a traveler who faces constant injustice and restrictions abroad, I can deeply relate to the pain of being misjudged-of being seen as someone you're not-simply because no one cares to listen to your real story or view things from another angle. Right now, no matter where we are on this planet, we may encounter Sudanese refugees who are struggling to build new lives, all while carrying an immense burden on their hearts and shoulders. By watching this video, we may learn how to offer them better treatment and become a safe person for them to reach out to if they ever need us. I wish peace and happiness to all the Sudanese people who, despite everything, continue to practice love and friendship for one another and their beautiful homeland.

As A Sudanese person, I would like to thank you for your efforts on covering Sudan and I would like to apologize for not sending you any videos as you asked for on Instagram a while back ! It's nice to see that you still put together an incredible visual experience. I'm a Sudanese activist, analyst and reporter. I'll be providing you with feedback and necessary corrections from the perspective of a Sudanese citizen whose family was almost entirely displaced by this war and who spent considerable time researching and most importantly listening to ordinary Sudanese people from all areas of Sudan as is necessary when you report on a place. To give you a bit of background on myself: I was a part and supporter of the 2019 revolution and come from an average Sudanese, rather middle or lower-middle class anti-Bashir family. I am not affiliated with any political parties.
@waladkosti8 күн бұрын
2:00 - 2:30 Here I believe it's important to correct a few things for the sake of framing things correctly: While it is true that Hemedti lusted for power since his early days, the same cannot be said for Al-Burhan. After all Al-Burhan was offered governorship by the former president in 2015 and rejected it. His coming to power was also nothing he actually had a hand in: the Sudanese people overthrew Al-Bashir, then his defense-minister and then Al-Burhan was chosen out of a selection of senior officers because he was believed to be the least connected to the ruling NCP party. However, Hemedtis latest coup attempt (which is the start of this war) was driven out of his desire to (and I quote him) "either arrest or kill the criminal Al-Burhan" - who was his superior at the time. As for the massacres, I also believe it is unfair to equate both figures, as Hemedti was always the leader of his own formations, freely deciding to massacre people (as is also evinced by the latest war) while Al-Burhan was a officer within a military controlled by the state (in turn controlled by political parties) until 2019. Hemedtis look in those final frames is quite telling and chapeau for your editing there. Hemedti has betrayed Musa Hilal in the early 2000s, then rebelled twice against Al-Bashir in the 2010s, then betrayed Al-Bashir in 2019 and he betrayed Al-Burhan in 2023 - this is the guy who will do it all to become Supreme Leader.
@waladkosti8 күн бұрын
7:30 Many Sudanese analysts will tell you that the "coups" in Sudan were actually all instigated by different political parties, using army elements who are loyal to themselves and instigating them to take power so as to bring in their party to power, typically done in revenge or out of political spite against their rivals. Numeiry through the Communist Party and the Socialist Block, Bashir through the Muslim Brotherhood, even Abood wouldn't have come to power if it weren't for the Ummah Party.
@waladkosti8 күн бұрын
21:04 I think it's important to mention two things here: 1. The Insurrections from people of the Western and Southern belt were quelled using Janjaweed-like militias before Al-Bashir (refer to the 1987 massacres of Dinka people). The person first starting this trend is now a member of ex-prime minister Hamdok's political coalition. 2. Just as Gaddafi was importing Pan-Arabism from Libya, so to was Pan-Africanism promoted by Western states and also Israel.
@waladkosti8 күн бұрын
32:00 Here it's important to highlight and correct: The only elected democratic government to ever lead Sudan was elected after a popular revolution in 1983 (much like the one in 2019) and then the military taking over for transition before elections were held in 1984. This was the most diserable course of action, as the revolution had not formed a government (just like in 1983). Correction: Al-Burhan did not overthrow Al-Bashir. Al-Bashir was overthrown first by his defense minister Ibn-Auf, whose takeover was promptly rejected by the streets. Then, forced to resign himself, Al-Burhan was chosen because unlike others he was not implicated in any international war crimes cases. According to Al-Jazeera it was decided on a car ride through Khartoum on April 12th that Al-Burhan would be the new leader. As for Hemedti, he is a result of the aforementioned system of failure Al-Bashir put in place. Keep in mind: coup proofing always results in distrust from the army, so even if Al-Burhan were to like Hemedti, the reality is that the army would be forced to include the RSF in any agreement so as to avoid them attempting a coup (which would then happen in 2023 any ways) An important factor in the subsequent events and failures is what many people would agree was the highjacking of the revolution by political parties who used the existing tensions and instability to settle scores with former rivals and enrich themselves. Here I am referring t o the Forces for Freedom and Change which would then bring forth former prime minister Hamdok, who was briefly ousted and then reinstated into office in 2021.

Two things to mention about the video: 1) I want to be clear about the fact that some countries are much less involved in the Sudan proxy war than others. For example, Saudi Arabia and Egypt are taking more neutral and mediating stances on the war, as they are involved geopolitically and are regionally concerned by it. 2) I wasn’t planning on making a video about Khartoum. While there, I sporadically filmed my experiences and the people I met to keep a video journal, remember things I witnessed there while immersed in the culture, and just for fun. I had no clear goal to share any of it. When the war started, I thought, “I need to speak about this!” as it went almost entirely unnoticed in mainstream and social media. When I looked back at my footage, even if it wasn’t much, I thought I could still make a video about Khartoum, its people, and the war and connect all topics. I became seriously invested in the war, its evolution, and my friend's whereabouts. I regularly checked up on them to see if they were safe. I collected a lot of footage from Telegram groups and X and kept reading and updating myself about the conflict. This documentary was the natural next step. And now…it’s officially my longest video yet!

Love this video, I didn't even have any clue there was a great war like this happening here. I've been saying there is darker forces at play here all across the world metaphorically and figuratively because there is an awakening happening amongst the human race. Because of this there has been so much bloodshed and mind numbing factors all across the world. I still have hope that there will be something positive coming out of these dark times and the interviews you've done with these people only fuels my hope. Usually I would've looked at this and felt like there was no hope at all but instead it's made me put my phone down or turned my TV off and try to do something even if it is small. We have to work together if we want to make change and I know it has been repeated for years and years but still people decided to turn the other cheek so many times. This time I have hope and as a people we can unite and we can't let powers above us dictate that anymore. Wishing tranquility upon the Sudanese people.

I wish I can say I'm happy to see a video of yours ): This is really tough, and with eyes of the world elsewhere why should the worlds powers care about a few Africans. Also people don't care when there isn't an obvious target or group to blame for everything. When you hear Trump fantasizing on ending the Ukraine and gaza wars in one day you see how little Sudan is in the American consciousness. Thank you for bringing such issues to the forefront. I think you really shine in these (I'm thinking of the one on the Lebanon explosion) and it's really all about the storytelling and you really do an amazing job I hope you'll do more of these in the future.

Man this episode broke me down. Breaks my heart to see the suffering of the beautiful people of Sudan. May Alah protect them and bring peace and prosperity to their people. All that because very few evil and heartless people want all the power and control. After so many centuries of wars and suffering, when will all this end and when will we learn to love, respect and tolerate each other regardless of our beliefs, religion, or skin color or the land we were born. Im not a religious person because in the name of religion too many people have suffered and been killed. 😭😭😭

You always say that about your best videos. They come together because you are genuine and empathetic. Keep filming those meant to be private interactions and conversations. I have been praying for Sudan but did not understand what the issues were. Thank you for delving in and sharing.❤

Sudanese DON'T deserve this terrible war. They are the most kind and hospitable people.

Thank you for making this important detailed documentary about our beloved country Sudan. I am a Sudanese/Serbian citizen and I have a hard time to explain for my Serbian friends about the complicated situation in Sudan. Documentaries like this will help to attract more people to know about what is happening and why is it happening. Praying for peace for my country Sudan. thank you again.❤
