While it seems unlikely, I always wonder if God wanted Benedict IX to be the Pope for some reason and there was a Jonah parallel going on where he didn't want to be Pope and God kept leading him back to it.

Benedict probably viewed the papacy as more of a powerful political office than a holy office. He was 20 when his dad installed him as pope, lost the office in a military conflict; regained it in a counter offensive; sold it to his relative to marry his cousin; then regretted his decision and got it back and died at 43.

The dark story we know about Alexandre VI comes mostly from one source, Joanne Burchard, who later revealed that he hated the Borgias, and spied for the future pope Julius II, with the promise he would become bishop of Orta. With all due respect, given that the source is not neutral, it is then legitimate to reconsider what we know about his pontificate, because the popular conception is merely a Hollywood exaggeration deriving from a narrative that was already an exaggeration of his crimes.

Good point. However, the source not being neutral (and some would allege that no source can be neutral) wouldn't be enough to dismiss everything that source has to say on a particular subject. It does call for more "due diligence", like looking for sources that contradict the first one and evidence for/against each claim, preferably from yet other sources and even better if any evidence can be confirmed/refuted by objective, tangentially related facts. Just sharing my two cents.

Pope Alexander VI - at least in his defense of the temporal interests of the Church - was one of the greatest and most successful popes of all time. Years ago, I wrote a series of posts about him, trying to put him in a positive light. I learned more information after writing them, and I changed opinions, and I became an even bigger admirer of him. Last year, I went on a sort of pilgrimage to Valencia, Xàtiva, and Gandía. ❤ One day, I will finish revising that series, this time probably just into one big post.

Been studying the Benedict IX papacies. It's a totally wild period with serious consequences for how we view just "what" a pope is - on account of how it shows us "how" one can become pope (viz., pushing out the other guy - there are other cases but the 11th century is just chock full).

The Roman Catholic church and the Western Europe gone through countless horrible Popes, Roman purges, Pagan massacres, Islamic invasion, Mongolian invasion were the Christian world was almost eliminated, countless corrupt clergy, bishops, The Schism and the Protestant movement where it led to numerous sectarian violence and wars... Yet, the Catholic church survived more than 2 thousands years. The most influencial religion in history and the prime force that shaped the modern world, that even other, much older religions would constantly compare itself and adjust itself to it, but never the other way around. And is still Is the most fastest growing Religion today with more convert that are still unaccounted.

St. Peter wasn't pope when he denied Jesus. And his repentance was almost immediate. You can't judge a papal reign by something that was done before it began, no matter how egregious.

Aiken is being a relativist. Catholicism is a religion based on principles and standards. It is not about comparing, "oh this "pope" is not so bad as this other pope." (Aiken's arguments here even fail enormously). There is simply no way that respects Faith and Reason that Bergoglio is a valid pope. It is a simple proof by contradiction. Believing Bergoglio is a valid pope means that you have to believe that Jesus is a liar and not who he claims to be, because under bergoglio that gates of hell have prevailed against the Church in the form of a complete collapse of the authority and trustability of the papacy.
