The fact you can choose opponent and character to fight in RANKED mode always was hilarious for me. it just can't be a serious skill-based matchmaking when you always can cherrypick the best matchup possible. >re: point #3 being able to choose who you can play against in ranked based on seeing which character they selected is probably one of the worst design choices ever as it incentives purposely dodging one's unfavorable matchups for their favorable matchups in order to maximize their win rate and streamline their path to higher ranks. imo the whole point of ranked is that it's supposed to be like tests in school: you are supposed to study as much of the material that *could* be on the test as much as you can in order to it maximize your chances of getting a high score. ranked in fgs is similar too, want to maximize your win rate / make your path to the high ranks as easy as it can be? better study up on all the game's characters and how they interact with your main. but then again a majority of the fgc only labs combos and setups and barely studies matchups so i suppose it's quite fitting and poetic that they made a guilty gear for "babbies" such as strive have a ranked match system designed like this.

I literally picked up fighting games for the first time 4 months ago and I'm at floor 10. Something ain't right here. I did really like the tower when I first started. The fact that you can challenge above your floor but not below was great, it kept me from being stomped while I was still learning the basics. I find the problem really is that there's not enough space Everyone is squeezed in to floor 10 where celestial players can come down to fight, so the whole point of the tower - that you can't challenge people below your skill level - is completely negated.
@TheJackOfFools5 ай бұрын
I love Strive, its my favorite of the current generation of fighting games, but the tower is trash. Hot garbo. And most frustrating is the solution is simple: keep the aesthetics of the tower but when you approach a station, it just plugs you into regular matchmaking if nobody joins the station in like 30 seconds. That way you still have the aesthetic idea of being in a room where you could meet up with friends and rivals but you aren't limited to a pool of 32 other people in one room.

I personally love the tower system. In my opinion it makes for a stronger community feeling, because you can see everyone you've played with sitting at the cabinets Now yes I agree that there's a huge descreptency in terms of skill levels in every floor (especially in Celestial), but Its fun that you are given the option to play with either much better players and much worse you can pick your battles, which sounds terrible for a ranked mode since u can cheese it but in reality it isnt a ranked mode hte only leaderboards in strive are for matches won, not actual mmr and elo So noone actually cheeses their way into the top because there's no top to reach. I also think that dodging certain characters is fine, and being given that choice you can also pick who to go against which can help you get better at certain match ups. and Lastly , have you ever played vs someone in a fighting game and u wanted to run it back so much, but you couldnt unless the game rng put you two against eachother at random well in Strive you can keep remathing them all you want as long as they accept and you can go up to them in the lobby and ask them to play with you in a park to learn the mu. Oh and you can see and fight TOP level players which reminds me of offline events and makes me so glad that its an option because thats whats different about fighting games compared to other e-sports and its always fun to see that even top players are human just like everyone and you can match up against them, and that further strengthens the community aspect of the game imo. And thats why the floor system is my favourite fighting game online mode ever made (btw its better that they force everyone into it bcs it would suck if everyone was just using the auto search ranked and the lobbies where empty)
@bradley24945 ай бұрын
Agreed with everything you said. You also can have friends in celestial who let you win. So even celestial doesn't always have "good" players. And there were times when I was in celestial but nobody else was on so I had to go back down and play on floor 10 anyways. But on top of all that the lobbies don't always properly function. You press the button to get into the match but there is some error and sometimes you just sit for like 30s-min unable to do anything after the error. Just very poorly designed lobbies.

Yup, haven't touched Strive ranked since SF6 came out. That game's ranked just works. I have a far better experience playing Strive with friends and at locals.

I haven't made it high enough to experience these issues lol. I wish the rankings were character specific too. The only place to try new characters is the park.

I'm someone who no-lifes enough to always maintain Celestial status without needing to do the challenge, but Celestial sucks. The skill disparity is ridiculous, ranging from people who lucked out into Celestial, players who dodge to preserve their precious rating on ratingupdate/only pubstomp, to literal pros. I'm someone who usually floats in the top 50 of players but it feels like I have to put in way too much work to find a balanced match. Having fun should not be busywork.

Yep, the game should be finding the good matches for you

graaahhh its so frustrating, and then if you get kicked to floor 9, its the same problem bc good players get kicked down there all the time bc of the skill gap of all these players on 10

I don't always agree with all your takes but I am 100% in agreement with you here. The worse part is that they've had 3 years to fix this and it's still terrible. If they want to keep the 5/6 celestial challenge it should at least take place on floor 10. Makes no sense that you have to do it on the celestial floor. So stupid.

I don’t blame them

I can't blame them for wanting to try something new. That's how we get progress. For all they knew, this would end up being the new ranked system that worked so well that everyone started copying it. Unfortunately for them, that's not how it worked out, it turned out to be a terrible idea and I can absolutely blame them for continuing in a practice that has proven to be severely lacking. Had the ranked system been changed to something sensible I probably would have played Strive consistently over the past couple of years. As it is, I find I'd rather spend my time with SF and Granblue.

The only two benefits we get out of this ranking system are: 1: More Rematches 2: Low Skill Discrepancy That second one is just for fun. Sometimes, it's fun to people of vastly different skill levels, but that's what casuals are for!

You should go read the rules for Floor Masters and moving up ranks in HunterxHunter’s Heaven’s Arena arc. Then come back with the baffling question of why the devs thought it would be a good idea to base their online ranked matchmaking system off a shonen manga arc.

Destroy the damn tower! Cant believe its already season 4 for Strive. I quit the game at the beginning of season 1 and that Tower is the main reason. That system is the worst by far, really.

ELO works well; wondering why fighters do not use it more. Win - get points; win against way lower-level receive +0. There will be an annoying period while numbers stabilize, but it is super easy to regulate after

occasionally I hear of someone who is in floor 5-6 or something and getting on fine with it, which makes me think perhaps they expected in all this that the core competitive people will be just a 1% they want to separate from everyone else as quickly as possible. That was like the main goal of the design maybe? heh, and I don't think it was even meant to be ranked. Filter out the sweats and let them languish What has happened though is I think that even with Strive doing VERY well, especially for a GG game, the casual numbers probably aren't high enough to still populate those lower floors well. And kinda like Jiyuna is saying here, even if the floors were spread out more evenly, it still would have several of the other problems. The intent though...yeah I think it was less "rise up and challenge yourself" and more "please get the sweats out of here". People that don't block might be on 10, but GG tryhards aren't on 9 or lower at all lol Not having an actual ranked mode could itself be a decision to move the game more towards an "everyone can enjoy this!" situation than locking it behind the sweaty curtain, which was the vibe all the previous games had to the outside. And hey if people can roll up to floor 10 just mashing, you can feel pretty sure ideally they shouldn't be there, but they might love it for themselves haha. "wow I never thought I would be a Guilty Gear player but now here I am on floor 10 with player names I know from streams!" ASW really did strive to build a bigger audience

The experience below floor 10 also sucks. There are enough players but the way ranking and deranking works is really destroys my motivation. It feels like the game goes out of its way to make you feel shit for deranking and that sucks. I've made it to 9 a bunch of times but I'm a mediocre to bad player and getting dumped down a floor after a few bad matches does not make me want to play more. Much prefer the ranked system in SF6, T8 and GBVSR. Losing points doesn't feel nearly as bad and I think part of it is because there is a much wider point range to work with so you have more chances to even out your ranked losses. Strives system feels like a version of SF6 were the total points before Masters is 100 and you gain 2 points for every win and lose 3 for every loss. It feels bad because it is bad.
