I typed "How to become a software engineer" into google and the results will surprise you! - or not? they're pretty bad.
This is a new type of video for me, so let me know what you think!
We're looking at the first google result for "how to become a software engineer", which is a wikihow article apparently. We look at a kind of alarming random medium post about how to become a software developer (spoiler alert: it requires immense dedication). Then, apparently the market is crashing so we look at business insider's 17 tips on how to keep your software engineering job even during a market crash - topical i know. finally i found this ridiculous video of lifehacks to do if you work at a computer all day.. i can't believe these things exist.
The style was heavily inspired by drew gooden, so check him out / @drewisgooden
Also, we hit 4k subscribers! I wanted to thank you all so much. I'm extremely grateful that y'all put up with me.

Here's how I got my devops engineering job, which involves me doing software engineering stuff 99% of the time: 0. choose a language to learn coding with 1. get bored and stop doing it for 2 years 3. Put on resume that you know some code that you learned, and send it to company that needs someone who is learning. 4. spend 2 weeks just before interview, cram learning code you started learning 2 years ago. 5. Get job because they like your attitude and energy, never using the code in a technical review, because you sprinkled codey terminology throughout your interview to make it sound like you were super smart with the code, so they just assume you know enough for the job. 6. crutch on stack overflow for the remainder of your career.

I’m really glad you know people that aren’t exactly “passionate” or “dedicated”. Because I’m one of those people that didn’t really know what they wanted to do. I’m in college now studying computer science just because I like math, I like computers, and I’m kinda antisocial. Also the moneys pretty great for software engineers. Anyway I’m glad to hear I don’t need to have a burning passion, be super dedicated, and neglect everything else in my life just to pursue this type of career. Because that’s what a lot of people make it seem like you have to do to be a software engineer,

There's passion and there obsession. Passion is healthy obsession is unhealthy. I think in anything you do you should be passionate about learning and becoming better at it. You won't be very successful at anything if you don't have any passion for it, but an obsession isn't necessary for success. Having balance is key. I think these terms are being conflated.

I've been programming for around a year now. For anyone who wants to start, keep in mind many people are the industry are quite toxic and especially towards beginners. I can't explain why, but just ignore them. Especially on sites on stack overflow, for example, you will encounter some sort of toxicity for any question you ask. Remember: Making mistakes is good, as long as you learn from them. You will encounter times where you will feel like you can't do it, but in reality most people can and I'm almost certain you're capable. Just make sure to practice, make a personal project for yourself. By practicing a website you will learn and actually understand what you're doing.

So a simple way to think about programming is rule-crafting, it's a bit like writing the rules for a board game, you have to specify what happens, when and how. If you're not confident in your logic skills I'd recommend going with a higher level language at least to start, and work in something that has a quick turnaround. Like working in unity you see your results almost immediately, working in c++ with opengl takes longer and it can be frustrating when you're new when progress is slow.
@Bozemoto
@Bozemoto 6 жыл бұрын
I'm also a very logic oriented person, and started with c++ as my first language. For me understanding how the code gets compiled and instructions run helps me understand programming. But I did a year of teaching and found that not everyone works like that. For some it's better to start doing something simpler and not get stuck with the inner workings of memory etc. Meg suggested that she's not good at math and generally people who say that are more visually oriented, and should probably take a different route when learning. It's also a good idea to go with a simpler language if you're starting out and don't have a teacher. Since fewer things can go wrong you're less likely to get stuck forever.

Classes are easy, everything is chill, and suddenly everything is on fire, I made a huge mistake and I regret all my life’s decisions. Which life decisions? I don’t know, but I regret them. I mean, most people don’t have their entire school and surrounding city threatened by a raging fire during their final year, I hope. I don’t recommend it. There seems to be some people who see software engineering as vocation like the priesthood. I especially love "extreme" programming where apparently courage is one of the attributes that are required. Honestly, it's embarrassing.

I think the 'start coding immediately' advice is just there to point out that there really aren't any prerequisites you need to get out of the way first. You shouldn't be afraid of learning how to code before learning algebra or calculus or whatever it is you may think is in your way. I've heard that piece of advice a lot and it always sounds good. If the question is "how do I maximize my proficiency at programming (in some amount of time t)?" The answer is, inevitably, start now. There are a lot of good resources for elementary school kids who are interested in programming, including Khan Academy. They're not telling little Jimmy he doesn't have time to play. They're saying if you want to know how to program, no matter your age, starting now (given however much effort or time put into it you want) is always the best option for getting better at the thing.

"Begin programming immediately" is not bad advice at all. Even if it's just dinking around in Scratch or messing with Lua scripts to mod a game, it teaches you something of how to think like a programmer. It's best if you can learn this before you start a class that tries to teach you a "real" programming language. In my compsci program, the biggest reason people had problems is that they didn't have this skill, so they weren't able to formulate the overall structure of what they needed to write. Meanwhile I picked things up fine, because one of the programs I grew up with on the family computer was Basic, and I went on to make programs on graphing calculators in high school.

@potato-whiz
@potato-whiz 4 жыл бұрын
Ok, but if you walk into class without much programming knowledge, you shouldn’t be made to feel that you’ll be left behind or won’t get it. That’s kinda what the classes are for. And it’s odd that this is one field where some people think you should already know it before you start taking classes in school for it and where people like to pat themselves on the back if they know some programming before classes start It’s good if you wanna get a jumpstart but it’s absolutely not necessary for learning and getting a career in programming.

@@potato-whiz Exactly. I went to a high school focused on programming without having any knowdlege before hand about it and I easily had above average grades and I enjoyed it (even tho I did not follow that path in life after high school). Meanwhile my ex, who was my classmate, was treated like a demigod by the teachers just because he knew this stuff from elementary school thanks to some additional classes and he was going to coding competitions. Good for him, but almost all programmers wannabe who were going to those competitions in my high school had a certain arrogance because of special treatment like that and it's not fair towards the other students, who were just insecure teenagers. Like I was going to literature competitions and I was never treated differently in there because of it (I'm glad I wasn't, I'm just pointing out a weird difference), and same thing for other classmates who had other passions that they were pursuing succesfuly.
