Personally, I think 2023 was a pretty mediocre year for popular music and the charts. On one hand, I feel like a lot of the big hits were either mid or actually pretty bad. There were some really good, interesting songs but they bubbled under or just barely scraped the top 20. On the other, I think this is actually one of the most varied years for popular music maybe ever. There was EDM, country, disco-pop, regional mexican, k-pop, afrobeats, synth-pop, pop rock, reggaton, rnb, hip-hop and more in the top 40. That's one of the only things that's really going for this year, though. This was definitely an off year for pop music in general like 2018, except 2018 had hip-hop to carry it through the year. So when hip-hop also experienced one of its biggest "off-years" since arguably the early 2010s, there wasn't much to keep the charts running except... country kinda... For 2024, I hope we see a similar level of diversity in genres but I also want to see more artists break out and bigger "smash" hits, since this year felt like it didn't have as many defining moments or pop eras as previous years. I'd also like pop artists to phase out that synth-pop, nu-disco sound that was big in 2020/2021 and find a new direction.

Prob not, I mean why fix it if it ain't broken, the industry is making bank, music wise it failed massively, but numbers don't lie younger people care more about image and the artists don't care they want fame and money. I mean will people stop listening music, no? Will independent artists ever be as successful sure, but not as big as artists with whole teams of people making sure they are promoted and are going to do well. Olivia and Spice sorry to say weren't good artists and let's ask ourselves, what great artists came out in 2020-2023 not many, not at the level of the older generations nowhere near actually. Tori and Jojo are great vocalists, but let's face it their songs are bland and it's sad to see their potential go to waste, but lyrics do somehow matter for them, because what they don't have is an image. Controversie + image = succes not so much the music, I wouldn't expect anything great in 2024. If we have an artist I hope they are from gen Z feel like my generation has not had that super talented artist that will be timeless.

The downfall of Commercial music with lazy composition, with song writers getting to comfortable with PC software to do a lot of the work. Repetition with mundane beats, basslines and heavy vocal effects gets to much after a while. You cannot beat having a proper musicians presenting artistic talent, but as they will present music which is musically too in depth, they will not become mainstream. Recent promo releases have blown me away, German Symphonic Metal band: Leaves' Eyes - Forged By Fire. The Finnish Mezzo-Soprano vocalist, classical arrangements, progressive musicianship, just sends you to an epic experience. Then a few days ago, the Canadians, Lutharo - Time To Rise, the progressive key changes, using heavy to light vocals. The orchestral arrangements thrown in, presenting a high level of musical dedication, which you will not find in Commercial music. Whatever genre you like, I am sure it is better than Cardi B.

Music in the past decade has been bad. With only a few good songs. Whereas the 2000s was the last decade where we really had good music. Everything went downhill by the 2010s. 2010-2023...nothing but garbage music. "Artists" become famous off social media. Pretty much everyone is sampling classic songs to sell music. Women bodies are filled with plastic surgery. No one is setting an positive example. Like Pink once said, some of today's music isn't saving no one's life.

@@ngndnd R&B ruled in the 90s in my opinion, and you can't really tell the difference between 2009 and 2010 in terms of music. They are only 1 year apart from each other. The 2000s didn't really end until late 2012 came in, just like how the 90s didn't truly end until 9/11. I'm obsessed with anything 60s - 2000s, but the early 2010s had nostalgic songs too. Give it a chance, you'll probably gonna feel nostagia for it when the decade turns 20. But that's your opinion and I respect it completely 😊
