I would hate being a canvas on this show. I've seen too many canvases walk out loving their tattoo, then getting voted into the bottom. Even if it's a not-so-great tattoo, the person wearing it is who matters, and so many of them leave excited then come back with the wind gone from their sails.

Yeah but on the same token this is a competition where they are going to be judged so I don't see a problem.... It could also be looked at like layman going to buy a car and being happy what they walked away with versus a mechanic going and buying a car and really knowing what's up. yeah the layman may be happy with what they walked away with but if a mechanic saw what the laymen paid and walked away with he'd say you got ripped the f*** off. same thing with the tattoo you may be happy with it but it can still looks like s*** to some ppl. but hey it's a free country if you're okay walking around with s*** tattooed on you more power to you. 🤨🤭😉

I'm no expert in tattooing, but I think the biggest problem Ink Master has is that they don't seem to like different "styles" I always think back about the challenge where they criticized someone for having tattoed a womans face with a bigger/non traditional nose Picasso's style was really cool and I felt like they should've given him another chance or more time? He seemed like a really talented artist, but just very stressed

Picasso's drawing was the best of this video, and it's an amazing drawing. Those judges are trash, like you said they don't like different art styles (and also not enough feminine tattoos on women...) I hope that the next seasons elect different judges who know how to judge tattoos properly, or at least that have an open mind to different ideas and styles

You have to follow the rules of the challenge. They're testing specific areas of tattooing each week, and if you're doing contrast day but not showing contrast, you're going home. I definitely think they nitpicked it too much, but Chris didn't even try to meet the challenge he was given.

@@LoveLee_Dreamer I think the issue is that the judges on this show are inconsistent about the criteria for their eliminations . Sometimes their eliminations are based specifically on not following that specific challenge, sometimes they just pick the tattoo thay they didn't care for that actually followed the challenge, and sometimes they go by the artist's "report cards" instead of focusing on the actual piece they're judging at that time.

Picasso's mask tattoo was badass imo. The wobbily lines compliment the jagged design, the flames looked super 2d but that's about it. The colouring was awesome, literally looks like a watercolour painting. He didn't deserve to lose against Alex's 'flower in front of a mask in front of a tree'.

It doesn't pop as much as the other tattoos. So in comparison, it looks muted. However, people wrongly assume that just because something isn't bold, that it lacks detail. In reality, the tattoo was very detailed.

I don't like how the judges just arbitrarily switch between "report card" and who actually hits the challenge. Ashley was the ONLY ONE who made her design look like it came straight out of a comic book, plus she was super creative with the different elements she put into the tattoo, while making the character look like her canvas. I totally disagree with that decision. I don't think anybody else would look at that tattoo and not know exactly what's going on.

Yeah, but the anatomy was really weird. The eyes were crooked, the one leg disappeared into nowhere, and the other ended in a really weird foot that looked like a kid's drawing. The arm in the foreground looks like her elbow would need to be hyperextended to achieve the pose she has. Because of the way the top of the outfit hits, it looks like the character's breasts are drastically different shapes and sizes. I know breasts aren't identical, but it's like one DD cup and one b cup the way it's drawn. The concept and design were cool, the execution was pretty rough.

The fact of the matter is though, her tattoo has horrifically bad anatomy and anatomy is not only a key element of a "superhero" tattoo but any tattoo involving a person. It really shows off her amateur skills and that she's a lazy artist. Because learning to draw people is one of the easiest art skills to practice. There are endless resources and references online. And life drawing classes, where you draw a naked model with other artists, are some of the easiest classes to find and attend as well. They're very cheap and usually run every week. And the design and application are hardly great either. The superhero costume is as bland a design as possible. And there's nothing particularly incredible about painting a cupcake on the character's butt, for instance. The colour saturation is not that great either.

It would have to be the last round or be a master “canvas” and get a free full sleeve,back or chest and stomach tattoo by the most talented artists there. The tattoos that some of these ppl got were absolutely amazing big pieces. Clean Rock One’s full chest stomach and part hip tattoo was huge and amazing but the one I’d really like to of gotten is the black and grey realism back piece or the color dragon back piece done by old town ink artists DJ Tambe and Bubba Irwin. They legit got a 20-30k tattoo for free and the bragging rights to a winning piece

Roland is a one trick pony in Polynesian work. It still baffles me the judges/producers allowed him to go as far as he did in the competition, so many people got screwed with awful work from him. I know the canvases volunteer and take the risk by getting free tattoos from the show, but it was just wrong to allow Roland to keep tattooing people.

@@glopop5282 He did blackface on three separate occasions that we know of. In these instances, he painted his entire body brown, often donning an Afro wig. In one case, he dressed as a racist caricature of a black Superman-like character with an “N” instead of an “S” emblazoned on his chest. In another, he was dressed as a basketball player. Photos are available on TMZ if you search “Oliver Peck blackface.” The photos are pretty shocking. In this case, I can’t say I’m sorry he was cancelled. Racism in the tattoo industry is already a huge issue; to have the judge of a renowned competition like Ink Master behaving in this way only perpetuates it.

I know he’s got good application skills, but was anyone else surprised when the judges quickly ruled out Cleen from being eliminated for the superhero tattoo? (15:11) His was by far the least visually appealing to me out of the three. If I were the canvas, I’d take a beautifully drawn tattoo with a few rough lines (Picasso) over one with huge, immediately visible mistakes in anatomy and perspective (both of the others, but mainly Cleen). Just look at the differences in the head sizes of the man and the lady! Not to mention the canvas jury results... Also, the other two tattooists at the bottom were both praised for their creativity, which was the focus of the challenge. I don’t *really* disagree with the final decision, but for me the choice would have been between Ashley and Cleen, not Ashley and Picasso.

I hate that they call clients "canvases". As a 20 year tattooer, that has never sat well with me. If the clients respect you , you should show them the same respect. Me personally, I try to establish a working relationship with my clients because I want them to return. And calling them canvases just seems like they're calling them a object rather than a person. But thats my personal opinion. I've worked and guested at over 60 shops in my career and I've never worked at a shop that call their clients that. Some use the term customers but thats it. Side note , every artist I've ever worked with named Mark , has been a doucebag

Tbh I don't find problem with it in this specific context. These people aren't clients, rather volunteers but that doesn't roll off the tongue as well. And a majority of the time there's no focus on the person at all, the entire show is focused on the art produced no matter who it's on for whatever reason. When referring to them, canvas is really what suits best.

The gimmick I hated most from this show was the human canvas jury. I feel badly enough when someone gets a bad tattoo but then to have to sit in a room with other people ripping it apart is so much worse. I’m glad they didn’t run that gimmick too long.

I actually think her tattoos are better than some they had win, especially since every single one had anatomy issues. I didnt like the bike, but its not her fault since her canvas didnt bring in a direct reference and didn't give her pointers as the expert. Her anatomy is legitimately not as bad as some of the guys. Even then, Picasso's is completely his style. Those who try to be anotomical and failed harder than them should have been gone, not Picasso.

He's technically competent but tbh I don't find any of his work beautiful - he's just not a great artist. I'd always prefer an aesthetically pleasing tattoo with minor linework issues over something ugly but smoothly applied.

I actually kind of like the way Picasso's tattoo looked, I'm not an expert so the technicality side I'm not familiar with, but the way they described it looking like it's sketched and rained on I kind of like that effect. It's like a watercolour drawing.

The judges come from a traditionalistic viewpoint where having a solid outline is the most important. However, one can see from many art styles outside of tattooing, that outlines are not always necessary to produce aesthetically-pleasing and readable art.

The judges are so picky. It really just depends on how they feel that day. They keep people who don’t do the challenge just because their tattoo is better and then kick people off for not following the challenge even though their tattoo is better than someone else’s. That 70 year old man said that Chris gave him exactly what he wanted and he wears it proudly and would go to Chris to get another tattoo. The other chick tried to follow the challenge but ended up putting in random lines that don’t make sense. That canvas wouldn’t go back to her whatsoever and it wasn’t what she wanted

That tattoo at 17:50 to get critiqued so hard on being a bad, bottom of the pack tattoo is mind boggling to me. That whole thing looked phenomenal to me. Looked like that dude (Christian I think) at 18:17 even looked confused at how her tattoo was getting picked at for being bad, lol. It's also kind of strange because on other tattoos, I've seen the judge say "But x doesn't look like that in real life". And on hers, she explained that she made her mask a certain way because that's how they look, and then he says you can't say you made choppy lines because they look choppy in real life.
