I’m a professional sculptor and restoration artist and have to make things from scratch but also cut corners when needed. I always thought tattoo artists were similar. Amazing some can’t draw at all though. I’m a pretty good illustrator as well and thought about self teaching myself to tattoo since I’m so into the culture and i would proficient before I touch anyone’s skin. Why not if they can’t draw and I can and have done professional work for 17 years and with my current studio I work for for 5 years, I’m sure I can do just as well as any decent tattooist out there.
