The biggest thing that is different is that even if you live in a tent in the woods, you probably aren't going to be that far from civilization, because there are necetiies you need access to from a city, food and other services, unless you do go full frontiersman and live off the land, but I don't know how that would work legally.

The life advice about being able to mess up in your 20’s and still have time to move on is really nice to hear. I needed that right now. Although I’m 29, I’m at a low in my life and looking for ways to “start over” essentially. It’s rough but better now then later when I’m older!!
@ToadstedCroaks3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, it's never too late to start over, especially if you're at an ultimatum in your life where you can't figure out how to keep going. What do you have to lose at that point by just flipping everything over and going a new direction? At least that gives you something to do for a bit longer in life. Plenty of stories of people in their late 40s / 50s who decide to stop their career that they've been doing forever to start something entirely different, like becoming a nurse. People get way too caught up in the moment to moment troubles of their lives. People generally have 80 years in this world to enjoy ....just think of the passage of time that has happened in your first 30 years, all the things that happened as a kid growing up ...as a teenager ....early adulthood. Now imagine experiencing that all over again 2 more times. Instead of "Holy crap half my life is already over, what do I have to show for it?!" it should be "Holy crap 5 year old me felt like forever ago ... and I have so much more time to experience more!" The goal is not to be "ready by 40 years old", the goal is just to live life as you would for the last 40 years. Some people luck out and figure out their timeline early, others later on in life, and some don't put emphasis on timetables or checkpoints ..they just go with the flow. Nobody should be expecting people to be at certain points in their life when the next decade shows up.
@Bwetzel8883 жыл бұрын
@@ToadstedCroaks awww that was so nicely worded! Thanks so much. I definitely put too much pressure on myself sometimes, but I don’t know why. Many of my family didn’t reach a “good successful point” until long after I was born, within their 30’s, and others are struggling even now, who are in their 50’s. I have weird fears that buildup that stem from multiple sources, ranging from medical fears to success-fears. But I just gotta remember to take a step back sometimes and think “you know what, it’ll be ok. Can’t worry about things, just gotta go with the flow!”

What Garnt was saying at the end about there being a place for higher education and that you shouldn't go just to go is so true and speaks to my own experience as well. We often feel like we need to go to university or college right after high school or we'll be failures but from what my therapist has helped me understand is that it's better not to go if you don't actually want to go for some reason. It's often better to go later when you've had some time to figure things out and know what you want to go after instead of pushing yourself to do whatever. It's not true for everyone of course, some people know what they want to do and go do it but for many who don't know what they want to do it can often be better to take time off and try things you're really interested in before taking that big leap. It doesn't matter if you start later than your friends, once you leave high school you're no longer following the same linear path as everyone else as before and that's a good thing. Go out in the world and do what you want. Even if you still decide like Connor said to go to school cause you need to get a job to make money that's okay, you've at least done what you wanted or tried what you wanted to do and don't need to feel that regret later in life. It's just super important not to force yourself to seek higher education until you are ready for it, either because there's something you really want to do or because it's the ends to the means to get you to where you want to be. Not everyone is in the position to do this of course, but if you can, and I believe more people than we think can, do it and take the time to figure out you and learn what works best for you, not what everyone else tells you what they think is best for you. That's something that's really hard to learn in life.

You guys have no idea how badly I needed to hear the chat about being in college and indecisive about a career path. That has been a major stressor of mine over the past year and has only gotten worse with covid. Stories like this help me realize I’m not alone. Love the podcast guys. Even though it’s hilarious and a massive meme most of the time, you guys are really impacting people out here. :)

yeah. I've been studying for almost 5 years by now and couldn't get to finnish it simply because after a few semesters I realized I just don't wanna do most of this. But when realizing this I was already in for about two years so I thought I had to put through with it somehow, but it was almost impossible for me to get anything done knowing that I don't wanna have to do any of this. Just recently I found a nieche in my field of study where I think I might be happy with a job there which has given me the energy to pull through some hard stuff lately, but it's not gonna be easy to find a job even if I manage to finnish within the next 6 months just because so much time has passed. Yet I feel like it's worth trying, simply because throwing it all away would be a massive waste of lifetime. Job interviews are gonna be interesting though. "So it took you almost twice as long as normal to finnish college. What took you so long?" "Well sir, I'm glad you asked. That is because I'm fucking lazy. Please give me a job." xD

the boys calling out the college crap is honestly so comforting. i always hear all the “pick the middle school classes to get accepted into a specific college you will choose in high school so you can cement your future” and constantly having the “i wish i took x classes in middle school” “i need to plan the rest of my class choices for high school and college” and other needless stress. i finally decided to do what i want so i can be happy but old habits die hard and i’ve been pushed into the mindset of “if you don’t go to college, you’re gonna end up like your mom (homeless druggie)” since i started going to primary school. luckily i’m out of the environment that pushed that on me and i’m in a more supportive one, but even with the unconditional love and support i have now, i still have a constant dread when talking about my future. i’ve been getting better with it though now that i’ve been taking better care of myself but it was a really rough school life.

that little bit at the end where they were talking about uni hits me hard. i literally have just graduated highschool and it scares me to think that I just dont want the do career path I chose because I also just dont have a backup plan if i dont enjoy that.
@MicusII3 жыл бұрын
Do not worry! There are so many career paths out there like the bois said that even if you don't end up liking what you do in university or further in your educational path, there are so many opportunities available to try and explore. What Connor said about his half Japanese and Welsh friend hit home to me. The no mad life style that I wish to achieve. Even after graduating university in 2020, I might not be the perfect optimist or even have a job in this current moment, but I'm still applying for jobs (granted not as much as I should), but I have discovered more about myself just from listening to this episode of Trash Taste. This one is probably going to my number one spot for sure. Lady Beard is number 2 for me simply because of the untraditional career path aspect and forging something crazy and unique in a world where everybody expects you to go the traditional route.
@ahnav3 жыл бұрын
University is the best place to experiment honestly. If you don't like what you're doing you can just try out other stuff while you're there. You might found out you hate Uni all together and drop out, and that's completely fine. For me, I realized that I do like my major, but I just hated my courses and my professors. Most of the shit I learned while I was in Uni was from online courses, and that's also the reason I even graduated.
