I think my issue with the trad wife stuff is it’s one of those things that like people find impressive when rich people do it but it’s sad when poor people do it. Like these trad wife influencers don’t need to bake bread and pick cotton, they do it because they are privileged enough to have the time and money to do it out of choice. It’s like they’re showing off how rich they are because they don’t need to work. But if like someone was doing those things to survive, like picking cotton because they can’t afford to buy a pillow or hunting because they can’t afford food, it would not receive the same praise. I think that’s what rubs me the wrong way, it’s the lack of insight to their privilege and acting like they’re so superior to people who buy their bread at the shops and live in the city. They can choose to do these things but so many people can’t.

it’s also a big reason why the tradwife role just isn’t really thing anymore. in the us and pretty much anywhere you need a damn good job to be able to support a family with a comfortable life and not have your partner work at all. on top of women becoming more independent and having full time jobs becoming the new norm. if you don’t have to work and you still have a nice domestic life then that’s great for you, but it’s simply not the reality for many people anymore

The TikTok farmer’s response to the extremely valid criticism she received is your classic troll response. She knew what she was doing, she got the engagement she wanted, and her response videos are deliberately obtuse to spark more engagement. I’m so happy to hear Jarvis and Jordan talk about the cop out so many online personalities use when they get criticism. They always respond to the craziest people yelling at them while completely pretending no one had any actual valid complaints, when more often than not the majority of people have very reasonable concerns. No one should be harassed for being in an interracial relationship or liking vintage dresses, black women can make jokes at their own expense as much as they want, but when you’re leaning into cotton picking jokes in this the year of our lord 2024, don’t pretend you don’t know why people are mad.

34:15 okay, so it took about 6 million years for humans' ape ancestors to evolve into modern humans. The remains of Lucy, a hominid believed to be one of a species that humans evolved from, are about 3 million years old. Transatlantic chattel slavery in the United States existed for less than 300 years. It's harder to find an accurate figure for how long it existed internationally, but if you think of 1492 as the earliest possible year it could conceivably have been invented (and it was later than that), there's 371 years between that and the date of the US's Emancipation Proclamation (and the US was the last country still doing chattel slavery by then, AFAIK). So that's still an existence of >400 years. In case anyone needs to be told: that is not enough time for any group of humans to evolve genetically in any way that would make them more suited to any given behavior/labor. Yes, epigenetics are a thing, but (again, in case anyone needed this clarification): picking cotton is not "in [anyone's] DNA." (It's probably debatable how much of the behavior and effects of even agriculture itself, and living in a large, settled, non-migratory society in general, are "in our [any humans'] DNA" in a way that would indicate any evolutionary adaptation or preference toward most of those things. Because again, evolution and adaptation often happen over millions of years.)

If it's supposed to be gallows humor/beating racist trolls online to the punch/a reclamation thing, then fine (and she doesn't need my permission to post any of this anyway), but it didn't come across that way. Also like... If your point was just "I was born to be a farmer" and you're a homesteader, you must grow other stuff besides cotton, like crops for food? Why choose cotton to make the video about, unless you're trying to at least troll/make a dark joke? IDK.

They Might Be Giants had a song on Disney Mania 2 (I think) which is like covers of Disney songs? Or songs for kids? Anyway, their song is called Baroque Hoedown and it was the first song I ever heard in 8D audio. I used to listen to the CD in a portable player in the car and I would listen to that song on repeat because it sounds like a blimp going in circles around your head!!!!!!

I was down a Tom Lehrer rabbit hole just the other day! He invented the jello shot when he was in the military, implied he worked on nuclear weapons as a cover for the fact he was actually in the NSA, and then wrote a bunch of political satire banhers that he recently released into the public domain! He obviously doesn't work anymore cause he's 93 but also because he said the modern political landscape is too difficult to satirise; he said, "I don't want to satirize George Bush and his puppeteers, I want to vaporize them."

every glimpse we caught of hannah lee's life made me whiteknuckle harder and harder. like you guys said, things like being a farmer or having a large family aren't bad in a vacuum, but everything here is just....off. it looks so much like the Trad Christian Commune Homeschooler type of shit. like, it looks like they keep having another baby as soon as she physically recovers from her previous pregnancy, which reeks of the Quiverful movement. idk if they are Quiverful, but even if not, those type of Christian circles are frought with SO much misogyny and abuse (with some openly advocating with beating kids as young as infancy). and that's not even getting into the racism she and her kids must face just by existing while black in trad circles, like!!!! sorry i don't mean to fearmonger because i do not know hannah or her husband, im just so scared for her and her kids

It isn't international but I'm a truck driver and I get a constant "omg be careful" sentiment from a few friends and family members because I go near every American city on the East Coast and Midwest. I care way more about the traffic in Atlanta than the perceived crime rate. That's the real threat

First response video she describes it as "dark humor" second response video she says it's "not about the past or history or black people and it's just about her" then what the fuck are you being dark about huh? Like, you can do all this prismatic thinking where anything that means you could have done wrong has to be Vanished away from different angles on your own time if you want, but when you're in front of other people, they can actually fuckin hear you man
