They could cure the "Pacer Bounce" by uprating the dampers (shock absorbers). The seating could also be replaced with more comfortable 'Train type' seating as seen in the class 143 & 144 Pacers. I personally don't mind the Pacer and think they are ideal for little used non-electrified branch lines. The Lancaster to Morecambe line has normally got a Pacer on it and is virtually a shuttle service between the two stations with 'Bare Lane' station inbetween

Riding a Pacer means using heritage traction on the network. They have one benefit - the windows open. Pacers allowed the rail loathing Tories breathing space before selling off the business completely. They are basically a V-sign to public transport users in metal, a way of reminding people too poor to buy a car or live somewhere better that they deserve no more. I'm surprised they didn't remove the seats and make them standing only. I can only imagine those who sentimentalise Pacers don't have to ride in one on a daily basis. As a transport solution they are as relevant as the Sinclair C5, and their replacements are 20 years too late. If Pacers served the leafier suburbs of the Home Counties they'd have been scrapped long ago.

The Pacers were not made from old buses. They were newly constructed and yes, based upon the bus design and body. Rather than being fitted with bogies, (two axles at each end of each coach), they were fitted with single axles at each end. Single axles do not provide the same quality of ride as bogie axles, but they are, (were), not as a expensive as bogies and hence the cost of production was reduced. A consideration at the time. The quality of ride with the Pacers is poor........where the track is not up to the standard that it should be.......! It is not poor per se..! Whilst one could argue that this was often the case, in some regions in the past, and at the time they were built, that is not the case these days where track standards and geometry are better than they have ever been. Yes, you will lurch about in them when coming into a larger station over multiple points, but this will be at fairly low speed. You will even lurch about a bit when passing through a simple crossover, (from one track to an adjacent track), but this not just due to the Pacer having a single axle, it is because the traditional geometry of a crossover has hardly changed since railways were invented. Simple crossovers are invariably taken at low speeds anyway. Where crossovers are designed and built for higher speeds, (with longer length switch blades, for example), the Pacer will cope with it's passage through them almost as good as any other train.......the almost here will, of course, be the single axle consideration; but it will not make the ride uncomfortable. On continuous welded rail, (CWR), which is more or less the norm on the railways in the UK these days, the ride in a Pacer will be as steady as any other train, although here again, due to the single axle, there will be slightly more lateral movement, but not such as to make the ride uncomfortable. On a recent journey from Wakefield to Leeds I travelled in a Pacer which had been newly refurbished internally, and yes, thankfully this was with the lower back, original type seating, rather than the hideous tall seating. The journey down from the tunnel down towards Beeston and Leeds was taken at line speed for these units and was as good a ride as one might experience. We were only thrown about a little when passing over the multiple points at the entrance to Leeds City station. I take the view that one of the biggest mistakes the train operating companies have made with the Pacers is that of removing the original, bus style, seating and fitting them with the higher backed seating, (rigid plastic frame and cushions). When the higher backed seats have been fitted there are, invariably, too many of them fitted per coach. Basic leg room is often poorer than the worst one might find in an airplane........and we all know to our cost how poor that can be. Very often their is no room to sit comfortably without ones knees hitting hard against the back of the seat in front. This was not the case with the original bus style seating, which offered far more generous and comfortable seating space. If you don't believe me just find one of the Pacers that is fitted with the bus style seating and then compare it with one with the higher backed seating. By far one of the worst consequences of fitting the higher backed seating to the Pacers is that it makes them very claustrophobic. This is especially so when they are crowded, say during the rush hour. It also makes it practically impossible for any passenger in a seat to see down the length of the carriage. All to often all one can see is the back of the seat in front. I take the view that what ever the shortcomings of the Pacers, it is the creation of this claustrophobic atmosphere, caused by the fitting of the higher backed seats, that has made them, in the mind of the passenger at least, a poor train in which to travel. Cramming in more higher backed seating is never considered, as the major fault, by the train operating companies......and sadly.......by government. Far easier to simply condemn them as bad trains and rush to call for more investment in new trains, without objectively assessing that the actions of fitting them out very badly is arguably one of the reasons the travelling public.......and the press......have come to regard them as they do. It becomes the expected view to which we all, far too readily, subscribe........! Of course, more investment and newer trains does not necessarily mean better comfort for the passenger; although it should...! As an aside, just look at the new Hitachi 800 class trains..........they have appallingly bad seating for a new product. These are a poor substitute for what might have been possible if the fleet of High Speed Train, (HST's), had been properly refurbished. They are a British design and build and their coaches are arguably, the best that we have operating on our railways. All that was required was refurbishing and also building new power cars. Far more cost effective that buying new trains from Japan......! The Pacer stock still has a future, if properly re-engineered and fitted with bogies.........and without the appalling high backed seating, but does anyone have the vision to see this...?

Fun fact: BR and leyland sent one called LEV 2 to Amtrak in the 70s for testing on the North east corridor, it was rubbish, so Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority tired it out. It also sucked there. So they gave it to steamtown NHS the recently formed National Park, it derailed on switches and even derailed standing still. My boss watched it casually fell of the tracks. Yet it hasn’t even moved or been moved. So the park service then sold it to Pocono Northeast Railway and they wanted to use it to run a commuter service. It blew up on the maiden run. So they sold it to some guys in West Virginia and they didn’t know what to Do with it because they couldn’t get replacement parts. So then it when to the Massachusetts Trolley museum as a gift. Today it sits in the far back with some minor vandalism

I rode on a Pacer (144 020) from Lancaster to Skipton the other day (12th October 2018), most of it on unwelded rail. It was bouncy, uncomfortable and slow. The rain came in, the wheel I was sitting over had the most _excruciatingly_ bad flat, and one of the turbos had gone. The real icing on the cake, however, was when all engines (on all three carriages!) cut out completely - not once, but twice - for about ten seconds each time between Hellifield and Gargrave! They're always bad, but this really was ridiculous even for a Pacer. 144 020 is due for withdrawal next month (November 2018), however, so I suspect maintenance isn't the highest priority. On the one hand, yes, they're awful and it'll be a relief to see them go (and we'll be getting new trains in the North for the first time since 2000, at last!). But on the other, they're a quirky, characterful reminder of simpler times, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who will remember them with a certain fondness - albeit tempered with memories of unpleasant, laborious rides with nought but the monotonous 'bang-bang-bang-bang' of the over-spaced single axles to enjoy.

I've read RAIL magazine, and they are scrapping all of their class 142s, 144s, and 153s. They are even scrapping 142001!

Love the ‘futuristic trains for the North’ bit, yeah for Leeds maybe but Teeside and Hull are still stuck with Sprinters and the increasing-clunky Desiro UK TPE Class 185s. Sprinters are still pretty decent in fairness and I will be sad to see them go eventually, but those Civity 195s sure are cushy

As long as you don't want to ride on one on a Saturday in Northern land. GWR seem well looked after but Transport of Wales are past their sell by date

If you though the pacers running now are bad. Look up Layland's LEV2 the one for America. It is indescribable how bad it is.

Why all people I know dislike 142 and it always recovers 1st places in tops of ugliest trains 😭😭😭

I get that everyone hates them. But in principle it does seem like a good idea to have cheap flexible rolling stock that doesn’t require electrification.
@Thesmokercoaster3 жыл бұрын
Should make the lines max height doubled and use two or even four old routmaster London buses connected like these old Pacers. Double even quadruple the capacity and we will have double decker trains like America. I am actually joking

I have, a nice little line it is. Im sure the remaining Jointed Track will be replaced in a few years, making it less noisy. 150s run on that line now.

No hate against the pacers, however i do understand people's opinions. Each version stays in business until it can go no more and then the modernisation kicks in. Pacers should be part of railway history I should think.

At 0:15 it is a Class 323 not a 142/143/144. Is it still a pacer?
@JohnHigh5 жыл бұрын
I only really used the 323 for illustrative purposes. It was facing the exact direction I was after during editing, as I wanted to match the image of the bus I used just beforehand :)

im gonna go against the grain and say this: if it solved british rail's money problem, which meant saving it from other service cuts, and if they're mostly phased out of service and replaced by other trains, they might be the best trains ever made. sure, it was shit, but it did the job of both transporting passengers and saving british rail.
@JetDom7677 жыл бұрын
As someone who goes to Newcastle on one of these pieces of dog shit on a regular basis (Not by choice either it's either that or pay £7 on the bus), they really are showing signs of age I had one cut out resulting in the driver coasting the unit into Newcastle and having to switch them to a 156 to complete the journey to the Metrocentre. From what I have heard once we get our refurbs and the Pacers are turned into Coke cans, Heaton will be allocated 158s to run the connect service to Carlisle while the majority of 156s currently allocated to Heaton from what I can gather will be allocated to Newton Heath. Don't think Newcastle will see these new trains at all newest we will see is a 158 or at a push a 170. Pacers are uncomfortable noisy things that should have been turned to razor blades ten years ago at least!

They did the job they were designed to do for longer than they were designed to do it. People just love whinging.
@JohnHigh3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree, but that doesn't mean they weren't a bit naff. Went above and beyond what they were initially built for, but you have to agree that the new Class 195s are long overdue and are a far better, and longer-term investment.
@Gruftkriecher3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Who gives a fuck about people with strollers, elderly people, generally mobility impaired people or even people in a wheelchair as long as this abominations perfectly meet the design criteria? Who cares the design requirements were shit in the first place? And no, demanding trains to be accessible for people with an impairment is definitely not whinging.
@bombadilian2 жыл бұрын
@@Gruftkriecher I totally understand your point but is that not more down to the TOCs not making appropriate modifications to them rather than the units themselves?
@martinpattison40184 жыл бұрын
They can iron out the faults. Yes, they were made for short distance travel and they were made with cheap pairs like the seats. There is nothing that can not be changed and it would cost less money to do it then spent tax-payers money on buying Trains built somewhere else. I am not a train traveller and I work in a different country. Why? Who in Great Britain or Northern Ireland is going to offer a job to a 63-year-old? Simple answer: Nobody. I still have to work for a living for the next three years. Martin. (Dhaka, Bangladesh.)
