Wow, you didn't watch the series? Egyptian gods are effected by monster effects(Divine type and TBD) , some spells and some traps. Card hunter versing atem show cased that silfer would have died to Magic cylinder, but was protected by metal slime. Ra was destroyed by the spell called Ragnarok. Obelisk was weaked by a Trap card when yugi was versing atem.

This is a good point, but I would argue the comment itself is inherently antagonistic as the person themselves is calling Dzeef stupid and acting as if he's some sort of ignorant bastard, and then they go off on their "this is why I quit Yu-Gi-Oh" rant, which is always done by someone who just wants people to hear them bitch and complain. I don't think the amount of time spent not playing has any bearing as long as the person in question understands that the game nowadays is gonna be very different from what they are used to. Basic rule concepts, like how targeting vs. non-targeting effects work do not really change over time, thus the knowledge aquired in those regards is still applicable.

After watching a bunch of these videos of yours, I think I can see where the problem is coming from. You say things like "dark hole destroys Obelisk" without giving examples of other cards that can't be targeted but can be destroyed or cards that can't be destroyed or targeted. Kozmos would serve as a perfect counterexample. Let's take Dark Destroyer: "Cannot be targeted by an opponent's card effects. If this card is destroyed by battle or card effect and sent to the Graveyard: You can banish this card from your Graveyard; Special Summon 1 Level 7 or lower "Kozmo" monster from your Deck." It has the same untargetable effect that Obelisk has, yet in the very next sentence, it has an effect that explains what it does if it is destroyed by a card effect. Clearly this shows that there are card effects that can destroy without targeting. Then you look at a card like Kozmoll Wickedwitch: "Once per turn, during either player's turn: You can pay 1000 LP; this turn, this card cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects." This card cannot be destroyed by any destruction removal including Raigeki, but you can still steal it by using targeting card effects like galaxy eyes cipher dragon. Then of course you have cards that are immune to targeting and destruction such as the Blue Eyes Chaos Max Dragon. In this instance, non-targeting, non-destruction removal such as Borreload Dragon can still activate their stealing effects since the only requirement is that the monster you want to take control of needs to be attacked. I think by simply giving examples of other cards that have the effects these people think the egyptian gods have and explaining why they don't have them would clear up a lot of the misconceptions. You should try it next video.

I haven't been playing Yu-Gi-Oh seriously for about four years (I played 2004-2014, competitively 2008-2014), this does not in any way prevent me from figuring out how the god cards work, or how bad they are. There has been a distinction between targeting and non-targeting effects since at least before the game came to the West, and if you have ever played in a tounament you should know that, even if it was in 2004. Ignorant people like this make veterans like me look bad.

It's somewhat understandable that they would think obelisk is immune to everything, as that's how it works in the anime, but even then he's only unkillable the turn he's summoned. Targeting is something that most people have trouble understanding. When I first started playing competitively, I had a hard time understanding the difference between a card that targets and one that doesn't, and why it matters. The biggest reason this be a little confusing is because of effect that clearly tell you to choose a card on the field, but don't actually target. Tiaramisu was the one that baffled me back then. It clearly tells you to choose two cards to bounce, but people would always tell it doesn't target, and I seriously didn't get how that could be right. It doesn't help that older cards say "select" which means the same thing as target. The difference between "target 1 card on the field; send it to the graveyard" and "send 1 card on the field to the graveyard" is actually fairly subtle. Especially considering that both sentences essentially say the same thing. The only real difference is the presence of the word "target". And that's the part that people have a hard time wrapping there heads around. They're like "it can't be that simple. That's such a bullshit rule." And I actually agree with that. It kind of is bullshit. I personally think any effect that specifies a number of cards should target. (I'm looking at you, tiaramisu) the only things that shouldn't target should be cards that are broad all encompassing effects like raigeki and skill drain.

One of the things that might seem confusing for a newer YuGiOh player is how something like a Kaiju or Soul Exchange can tribute an opponent's monster that can't be targeted by card effects or is unaffected by card effects. Maybe the difference between targeting and non-targeting effects as well? Just some video ideas.

The ruling for Stormforth, Soul Exchange, and Lair of Darkness is that it is the effect of those cards that allow you to use an opponent's monster as tribute, so monsters that are unaffected by spells or card effects in general cannot be tributed using these cards. And no, you are unable to attempt to special summon while one of the anti-ss cards you mentioned are on the field, so you cannot even attempt to fulfill the summoning condition of Kaijus (tributing an opponent's monster), which is part of what made Iblee u-boards near unbreakable.

One thing I'd like to mention regarding the BLACK hole is that in the german version of the card(Don't know about other languages) it actually is named "Schwarzes Loch" which is literally the color black as an adjective and hole. I don't know if you or anyone will read this comment but I also didn't play Yu-Gi-Oh für years. I stopped after GX because it was uncool in my friend group and I didn't want to get singled out. Now that I'm in university I am starting again, because I found a copy of Yu-Gi-Oh power of Chaos, à PC game from my childhood. And at first I was the same opinion as the commenter, what happened to my beloved Yu-Gi-Oh? So many combos, so fast, so difficult to understand. But I took my time and informed myself and thanks to you and other yugitubers I really got into it. It is different, but interesting none the less. I'm currently trying to figure everything out and am playing salamangreat. So thank you dzeeff, and the rest of the community, for being so open and informative!

It's easy to see his last point as even playing legacy of the duelist using an earlier deck against 5ds and xzexal, as someone who stopped playing around elemental hero time it was strange seeing how the field could be so quickly flooded. Not to say it was impossible in the old days, it just seems commonplace with those kinds of decks and it shouldn't be a huge leap to see why people like us who stopped playing during those times would have an opinion like that on later/more recent decks

I think I finally found the secret to pot of greed! : To activate this card you need to put it face up in your spell/trap zone as if it was a continuous spell . If this card was activated this way , you excavate 1 card from the top of your deck , look at it and if it is a spell , a trap card or a monster card that you or your opponent owns , add it to your hand ; Immediately after this effect resolves , you mist excavate another card from the top of your deck , if it is a trap card , spell card or monster card that you or your opponent owns , add it to your hand . This card is destroyed and sent to the graveyard if it is activated ;this effect cannot be negated .

As someone who has never played yu-gi-oh and really only got to know anything about the game when KZbin just suggested your “why pot of greed can’t come back” I’m just surprised that these people who have claimed to play the game (even years ago) don’t understand or just don’t want to understand this stuff that I was able to understand in a couple of minutes of looking at some cards and listening to your vids. This is why I'm glad MtG doesn't have an anime/manga/cartoon and why that one planned one fell through because this is what happens when people get attached to cards based on the story elements rather than the actual gameplay. The worst we have is people who get way too attached to certain colors rather than playstyles and cry that a mono-color deck of their choice isn't viable in Modern when 99% of the time mono-colored decks aren't very viable in formats with huge card pools to begin with. Add an anime to that and it'd be 100x worse.

The Cardfight Vanguard anime gives the cards the exact same effects as the actual game so there's never any misunderstandings on how cards work like with the Egyptian Gods. Granted the players in the anime kinda suck and always win by sacking, but that's another topic, at least they represent the cards accurately.

I agree with you. Yugioh card context is all about understanding its description LITERALLY. That's why I just listen to how you understand the text clearly. I'd played yugioh around 8 years ago as well, so I know that from that length of years that I did play, rules and other stuffs already changed, as well as clarifying vague card descriptions. I may not know the modern rules now, but by just relying on literal understanding of the printed context, I is very clear that what's on the anime, and what is being demonstrated on console games are very different from the real OCG and TCG rules.

Calling Dark Hole "Black Hole" isn't a telltale sign someone doesn't know anything about Yugioh. In some other languages the name of the card is actually "Black Hole" ( in their translation of course ). So someone might just translate it to "Black Hole" from their version if they're not very used to the english card names.

About a year ago I said in the original Egyptian gods video "no, obelisk cant be killed by dark hole". Back than i was not a good player, hell i wasnt even a half decent player. A few months after that i started playing yugioh online with decks in which i liked the strategy of (raidraptor, cyber dragons etc). I began to enjoy Yugioh a lot more because there was more strategy now that i was playing with these half decent decks instead of playibg mish mash 10 level 8 monsters, 20 level 4s 15 traps, 15 spells. About a few months ago i started getting interested in competitive decks, and will soon buy my first deck with an actual strategy (Salamangreats) go to a regionals. Your videos have really helped me learn more about yugioh in general as well as competitive viability. Thank you for realeasing so much great content keep up the good work! 😄😃

Lol That was hilarious. Full transparency, I'm new to the channel and just getting back into Yu-Gi-Oh! After not playing since 2004. I'm literally just picking up Structure Decks and playing for fun with my kiddos, and have had to learn to thing that didn't exist back then... but I've learned them. As primarily a Magic the Gathering player, I gotta say the adage "Reading the Card Explains the Card" fits pretty well for old Obelisk and his brethren.

To be honest, the guy is not wrong in that last part, but for the wrong reason. I am still playing right now and play rouge strategies because I personally find them more fun than meta decks, and have not gotten my hands on any of the cards from either the orcust or sky striker archetypes (except for 3 ultimate dingersu in a month’s time), and the first time that I went up against someone using one of those decks, I tried to read the cards that they were using. Normally, without the timer, I would have been fine reading all of their cards, but because of their ridiculously long combos, we did not even get finished with the first duel by the time the 40 minute timer was up. Because of this, I don’t know what all of the cards my opponents are using actually do. I have a general grasp on what each one does, but I generally have to trust that my opponent is not cheating in order not to run into time, which is not ok. (P.S. I know by this point that comments are hidden but I just wanted to bring this problem to your attention to se what you think. And I know I could go and read all of the cards but I don’t really have the time to “memorize” what they do.)

I actually remember once where my cousin challenged me to a duel. He had said that, and I quote, "You can use Ra in a deck." My response? "Anybody who says that is an idiot." He didn't take it very well, and challenged my view. To be frank, I outright told him, "Feel free to challenge my view. Prove me wrong. I dare you to prove me wrong." I was running OG Gravekeepers, from about... seven, eight years ago. He got out Ra once. Nearly won, too.
