Recorded on April 15, 2022, at Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire.
Dartmouth College anthropology professor Sergei Kan was born in the Soviet Union just a few months after the death of Stalin. He came to the United States in 1974 at the age of 21 and received his undergraduate degree from Boston University and his doctorate in anthropology from the University of Chicago. He teaches courses at Dartmouth on the native peoples of Alaska, on the Jewish diaspora, and on Russia.
Next year-the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of The Gulag Archipelago-Dr. Kan will teach a course titled "Red Terror: The History and Culture of the Stalin Labor Camps." Dr. Kan has been kind enough to offer our viewers a preview of the seminar in advance.

It's astonishing how well Peter does his preparation for these interviews. He has such a deep understanding of the subject that you would swear it was his life's passion. And that applies to all his interviews, covering a wide spectrum of fields. My compliments.

I wish everyone (especially) under the age of 50 would read this book as well as "Gulag Archipelago," so that they can become informed regarding the ultimate results of communism.

For a video about a moment in history that will undoubtedly be repeated, the lack of engagement here is scary.

"The gulag did not arise because communism somehow went wrong, it was there from the very beginning." Wow, that was amazing insight Peter! I never looked at it like that.

Thank you for bringing this to the public. It is the only way that anyone will hear about it. I doubt anything like this subject is covered in our public schools.

The recent raid on the former President’s home, the early morning raids on his supporters, independent journalists, and the people who peacefully participated in the J6 protests, some of whom are now in jail are definitely concerning.

This is an amazing interview, and job well-done by the brilliant Prof Robinson! I believe the reason there is no discussion of gulags is because the modern world leaders are quietly setting up world democracies, and our American Constitutional Republic to crash/burn, so that the old gulag system can be implemented. To fully educate people of Stalinism, would be detrimental to their goals as people would revolt, as they are already in various parts of the world, ie France, Canada, Netherlands. I hope I'm wrong.

Happy I came across this and gave it my attention. My understanding of gulags was low. This talk painted a picture that I can understand and helped to give me a better idea of what all of this means and why it's relevant. Quality content as always. Thank you

I value this course, but add that students (mostly from high school) with NO "civics" education will not completely grasp the importance of it.

Sergei Kan seems to have forgotten the history of the Ukraine and the Polish/Lithuanian Confederation. BTW, George Santayana was incorrect, we don't repeat history because of a loss of conscious memory, we repeat history because of the evolutionary information contained in the memory system of our DNA.
