Tris, nice episode. Enjoyed this even more than the first. One comment, though, applicable to both episodes: I would have love another 10 minutes or so, seeing the owners putting into practice the advice you gave in the debrief at the end. Lovely series so far!

Tristan - Please don't do any more head-mounted views like the first 15 & last 5 minutes, unless it's actually necessary. The constant motion of the camera almost made me feel queasy while watching the video!! A nice steady tripod-mounted, or even sat on the table, view would have been entirely sufficient. Or perhaps get a camera with stronger image stabilisation to try out. It's entirely different if you're moving around the boat or doing a tour.

I'm really enjoying this series (as I did your previous one). My only suggestion, respectfully submitted (please take this in the manner of constructive criticism), is to let others finish their thoughts before you respond. I get that you have a great deal of knowledge and are anxious to impart that to boat owners, but they have numerous questions too - let them ask them. For many of these folks, imparting information to them raises a multitude of questions they may want to ask. I've been a small boat operator since my dad took me out on the Chesapeake Bay when I was a kid. I'm 70 now, and I'm always learning more, especially as I watch your channel. If only each person who operates a boat could receive some lessons from you - the water would be a much safer place!

Quick tip , on the gen sets, looks like a Cummins onan, on the Caterpillars, we started to install a small strainer between the water pump and the cooler. Helps keeps the rubber from the impeller from fouling / clogging the cooler. Love ya mate !!!

And be super conservative at the beginning! If it doesn’t look good, go out and try again. Even the most minor incident will be a blow to your confidence. So don’t take any risks… Additionally, from personal experience, a high windage boat like this one, will tend to oscillate if you let out a lot of chain when winds are strong (in the med it happens all the time). The windlass is robust, so it would not have an issue handling the loads, yet the rollers will suffer and make ugly noises. So I always use a snubber in high winds at anchor, and lay out as much scope as I safely can. The snubber helps keep the anchoring system healthy, so everybody on board (specially those on the bow cabin), can sleep peacefully at night. And never forget the anchor alarm!

Thank you for the content I am really enjoying it! You are always very calm and positive but at the end of the day I should have expected that from someone like you. All the infos at the beginning are super interesting too. The couple I think did very good too. I get it's probably very important to become good at manouvering the "classic" way but I think that a bit of technology retrofit would actually make their life so much easier and they would actually enjoy their beautiful boat even more. Nowadays you can get 360 camera view, virtual anchor and joystick control which automatically counters wind action. I get it comes at a cost but it would probably be a good investment. What do you think? Keep it up, can't wait for the episodes to come!

All those extra stuff you can get on a boat/car! Just makes captains or drivers more lazy, which also leads not so skillfull at longterm.. Those things can also break and what happens when people who only have used to use them and trust them 100% suddenly dont have em??

Great series. When we see a mistake and the correction, then we see (hear) the preventing action and the absence of error, we do understand. As opposed to just a narrative of "if you don't do this, this might happen". Tks.

Absolutely loving the series. We see so many videos of people sailing around the world on sail boats with tips etc but nothing in this area. I'm currently in ownership of a Four Winns Vista 288 and having jumped up from a bowrider this is a new learning curve so your vudeos are fantastic so far. I would love to see your tuituon on the elements of RYA Yachtmaster as I assume that is the qualification required to operate the superyachts that you have been. Can you tell any more about other qualifications that may help if that was an avenue I wanted to persue? Currently hold Coxswain grade 1 in Australia which seems to be similar to Yachtmaster but perhaps not as in depth and doesn't appear to be recognised internationally unfortunately. Anyway, keep up the great work.

What the owner said of the fuel tanks is not correct. When they are linked if you fill up one side you might end on average a 25% less full total tank capacity. In order to this correct with dual tanks, you fill one, then the other, and the go again to the first tank you where filling. It might be a 500 litres in a boat with 2200 litres capacity when you do this, which if you do a long range trip is not little.

I was very glad to see that also Lida had her training. I often see, that the owner does it all - and all other family members fall behind. That's not good since the owner could also become incapable and the horror begins for the other partner. Also I think the ladies should do more of the docking maneuvers since working the lines can be heavy work - work that for me is more suited to men. Just think of handling the often really big and dirty mooring lines.

Before I was allowed to drive my boat I had to do a long certification course. Is that not normal that you make a license? Like for a car? (But I also thought that to become a captain you must visit college for at least 4 years but this is only the case in Germany it seems)

Owner: opening the valve between the two tanks is not recommended. The rebalancing happens slower than filling up one of the tanks and you end up not having the max tank capacity and range.

First Aid Kit ... I always took a small first aid kit with me camping (wild-camping/hiking, Scotland). Then one day during an utra "gram counting" moment I decided FREAK IT do I REALLY need it? I left it at home but the Boy Scout in me turned around after a mile came back and collected it. That trip was the first time I got an injury, a big gash on my hand (processing wood). So I cleaned the wound and put some bandage on it and continued camping. The only time I ever needed a kit was the only time I left home without it (albeit went back to collect it).

Only negative thing is the Volvo engines It does comes down to reliability and availability of parts. Probably my most disappointing thing to see on a boat. I prefer Caterpillar and parts are everywhere in the world you can get them in less than a day usually. Cummins is 2nd Choice even though the parts are a little harder to get but still easier than Volvo. MTU are good engines and reliable but the cost is extremely expensive up there with Volvo.

Great vid from an AWOL follower. Just two quick observations - consider using a mic for each person involved in the filming as this will cut out wind noise etc, and that "empty" feeling in say the saloon. Secondly, how about setting up bow and stern cameras as you've done in the past on AWOL when berthing? Looking forward to the next vids.

Well done. You are good instructor. I have seen large super yachts with captains that yell at the crew when docking. You keep people calm by being calm. We have a 38 foot aft cabin SeaRay dry weight is 20,000 pounds. We were told once you drop the anchor to back up to set anchor after you secure it so it does not pull on the windless. This we do by backing up under idle power until the boat no longer is moving. The chain almost goes straight out and the boat stop. If you are in rock some time the anchor will grab and release. We have chain painted in 25 increments. The chain is painted red at the anchor and at the end other marks are white.

I find this series so interesting! 😊 One thing I don't understand: Why don't they use checklists on boats (big and small), just like you do in any airplane? Don't matter if you've been flying your entire life, you still go by the checklists, for good reason! I'm pretty sure such would be beneficial to many boat owners.

@@SuperYachtCaptain Thank you 😊 I had seen that one before (seen them all), but the list in the beginning had escaped me. Now, I'm not in the least surprised to see you use one, as you're extremely conscientious and safety oriented. (If I ever needed a captain on a bigger yacht, I'd move heaven and earth to get you for the job 😄) I wonder if it's more common on the larger yachts? I did mean the smaller boats, like the one in this video. Anything bigger than a row boat should use them. Should be mandatory, as should proper education. Unfortunately they can't all get private lessons with Tristan.
